Working

2 Sustainability 3
We at AECOM are working to tackle this challenge. Through our multi-disciplinary approach, we serve
our clients in many different arenas to develop sustainable answers for their needs. We take pride
in the fact that over the years we have fostered sustainability globally, as well as in Asia, within our
services and our operations, before many other firms had even considered sustainability as an issue.
Today, we are experiencing trends such as the loss of natural resources, climate change and
increasing waste quantities and we confront the possibility of irreversible change at a global scale if
nothing is done. Our team in Asia is pressing ahead to address the urgency of this problem. We apply
our local expertise and global insights to provide clients with professional sustainability solutions.
Within our service offerings to clients, we furthermore believe in ‘walking the talk’ by holistically
integrating sustainability into our operations.
We would like to take this opportunity to share with you our ideas on how we can achieve
sustainability together for now - and for the future.
Introduction
Asia is home to more than half of the world’s humanity. It
encompasses a broad range of diversity - geographically,
socially and culturally. The past few decades have seen
an unprecedented explosion of development in the region
through the growth of cities and infrastructure. While
this has enriched the living standards of many, we must
consider sustainability issues in the light of all this rapid
growth.
Climate change
Climate change is one of the gravest challenges of modern
times. The rising level of carbon dioxide – one of the main
greenhouse gases - in the atmosphere is a result of the
combustion of fossil fuels to meet our energy needs; and
the consequences are dire. Rising sea levels and climatic
disasters such as typhoons and flooding, on the one hand,
and catastrophic droughts on the other, are impacts we are
encountering in Asia. Scientific evidence indicates a direct
correlation between these occurrences and the rising levels
of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Tackling the effects
of climate change will therefore require strategies of a new
kind.
Water Usage
Water resources are being exhausted for domestic
and industrial purposes resulting in water scarcities in
many regions of northern Asia and elsewhere. Growing
populations, agricultural demands, industrial use and
changing lifestyle patterns have all contributed to this
situation.
