PRESS RELEASE
La Joya, TX- La Joya ISD serves one of the poorest communities in the nation. Nearly two-thirds
of our families live below the poverty line, over 90% of our students are classified as
economically disadvantaged, and a large majority of our high-school students begin working
before graduating high-school to help their families make ends meet. The District is composed
of 226 square miles of mainly rural colonias. Less than 30 square miles of the District belong to
small incorporated towns with limited resources. Where our students live, some streets aren’t
paved, some don’t have street lighting, and some don’t even have a sewer service.
The nearest library big enough to serve the District is 35 miles away, there are no YMCA’s, there
is no official Boys & Girls Club, and local summer activity programs are limited to the resources
of the small towns that are within the school district. These challenges call for innovative and
forward-thinking projects to give the 30,000 young Texas children the best educational
experiences and opportunities the District can give them. To live up to this obligation, the
District looks at ways of being efficient with tax payer money. The District regularly receives the
highest possible score from the Texas Education Agency regarding its financial practices.
In order to complete the Sports and Learning Complex, the District saved funds for nearly 15
years. The result of the Board of Trustee’s and Superintendent’s fiscal responsibility was the
ability of the District to construct the La Joya ISD Sports and Learning Complex. This educational
facility includes a planetarium to help students engage in science and math. The complex
includes tennis-courts, to expand available athletic opportunities to students. It includes a
natatorium, saving the school district hundred-of-thousands of dollars, as it will no longer have
to pay to lease pools and bus students across the valley in order for them to practice. The
complex also includes a 21st century homework center big enough to service our students. The
purpose of this was to create a place where students can do homework or study afterschool in
a safe place with the resources needed to be a student in the 21st century.
The facility also includes an outdoor pool with two slides. Although this portion of the complex
is its smallest area, it is gaining the most amount of attention. The purpose of this section of the
complex was to provide enough space for our 3 high school swimming programs to practice and
compete. Additionally, it allows for our elementary and middle school students to have P.E.
with water activities. The goal of the Board and the Superintendent of the La Joya ISD is to
provide an educational experience that is second to none for its students. By working hard to
minimize inefficiencies in its budget for many years, the District was able to provide this great
facility for its students and communities, a Sports and Learning Complex.
