ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
It is a genuine pleasure to express our deep sense of thanks and gratitude to the Director of
Labuan Matriculation College, Tuan Sawang @ Rizal bin Amit for making sure that his students
have the best facilities to do the research.

We also owe a deep sense of gratitude to Mr. Mansor Suleman , our mentor, lecturer and guide.
His dedication and keen interest above all his overwhelming attitude to help his students had
been solely and mainly responsible for completing our work. His timely advice, meticulous
scrutiny and scholarly advice have helped us to a very great extent to accomplish this task.

It is also our privilege to thank our own family for their endless support and for their
encouragement throughout our research process. We would like to thank them for sharing their
supports either morally, financially and physically.

Last but not least, we would also like to thank our friends for helping us whether it is directly or
indirectly help. We would also like to thank them for their teamwork throughout the research
project. Thank you.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

As students finished their high school life, they knew that they are on the way to a new
life in college. Entering a college is both an exciting and intimidating adventure. Some might
even find it terrifying because here students will learn a lot of new things. They will learn how to
live without the comfort of home, learn to fit in a new environment and learn to make new
friends from different parts of the country. Basically, here in Labuan Matriculation College
(LMC), students need to juggle different tasks in order for them to be a successful person in the
upcoming days. As we all know, being in Matriculation College is like being in a fast train where
we won’t realize how fast times flies. Therefore, students need to know how and then apply the
right learning strategies in order for them to be right on track.

According to Oxford (1990), learning strategies are defined as action taken by learner to
make learning easier, enjoyable , more self-directed, more effective and more transferrable to
new situations. Therefore in this task, we will study about the various types of learning strategies
which hopefully helps the other students with their study.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Our group has conducted a research on what learning strategies that LMC’s students do
and how they practice it in their daily life. Learning strategies is quite vital especially to students
because these strategies can help them achieve better academic result.

Learning strategies can be implemented in our daily life directly or indirectly. One way
to practice learning strategies is to start off slow and day by day, we will get used to it. Some
examples of learning strategies are reading, paraphrasing and summarizing. Some people also
like to teach themselves or maybe other people and this can actually boost our understanding to a
certain subject.

However, there might be a problem even if we apply all sorts of learning strategies in
our life. Some students complained that they still achieve an unsatisfying result even though they
went through countless times trying to understand a certain subject. This could lead a disastrous
future if we do not put our hands on it.

In a conclusion, it is a vital thing for students to have the right and suitable learning
strategies for them so that learning would seem a lot more enjoyable and understandable and this
is of course for their own good.

*add: Are the leaners aware about the importance of learning strategies?
1.3 RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this research are:

1. To find out the variety of learning strategies that LMC’s students use
2. To identify the problems regarding student’s learning strategies.
2.1 RESEARCH SAMPLE

Our group has conducted a research based on the learning strategies among
Labuan Matriculation College’s students. A questionnaire containing 28 questions
which further divided into three section- section A, section B and section C, were
distributed by our group members to 40 respondents who mainly consist of LMC’s
students from different module.
This questionnaire has three sections and each section has their own objective. For
instance, section A mainly ask about the respondent’s identity about where do they
come from and what is their result for PSPM1. These questionnaires were distributed
randomly so that we can really see the various types of learning strategies that LMC’s
students used.
