Chrome OS Recovery - Does not detect image de andrew-p 10/9/14 AGREGAR UNA RESPUESTA
I'm trying to recover an ASUS C200 CHROMEBOOK (SQUAWKS D7A-D2G-A5Z) that had its linux partition erased (partition 1) after an
unsuccessful Chrubuntu install.
PROBLEM: Booting into recovery mode (Esc + Refresh + Power) works but recovery OS is not detected so no recovery can be attempted.
(If booting into normal mode, Chromebook hangs at "your system is being repaired" screen)
I think this points to a problem creating the recovery media, but it could also be a problem with the Chromebook reading the media.... I'm
not sure how to diagnose...
Here are the different methods tried to create recovery media:
ON LINUX:
- Downloaded Linux recovery script (https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chromeos/recovery/linux_recovery.sh)
- Ran with root privileges on a SanDisk SD Card. Script gets stuck and says that there is no USB detected (ok, maybe it doesn't support
SD)
- Ran root on a SanDisk USB stick. Script runs successfully but ChromeOS doesn't do anything at the recovery screen when usb inserted
- Learned that SanDisk doesn't play nice. Ok, switching brands...
- Ran with root on Lexar Platinum SD card. Script gets stuck and says no USB detected. Ok...switching OS
ON WINDOWS (Chrome v37):
- Installed Chromebook Recovery Utility App
- Flashed SanDisk USB again...flash successful, Chrome OS doesn't detect anything
- Tried flashing Lexar Platinum SD Card, Recovery Utility sees a 0.0 GB drive and will not continue the flashing
- Switched to Kingston USB stick. Flashing completed successfully but Chromebook says "media does not contain Chrome OS" when
inserted"
So I've tried a couple different media types, none seem to work. Either I can't flash the SD Cards (on Linux or Windows via recovery tool)
or I successfully flash the USB sticks but Chrome OS doesn't recognise the recovery process.
Tips?
Cheers,
Andrew

10/9/14 Andrew: try redoing it under Windows with all the anti-virus software turned off.

10/9/14 The windows machine isn't running any antivirus software. Tried using the Windows Chromebook
recovery app to flash the Kingston USB stick again. Successful write + verification but Chromebook
still displays "device you inserted does not contain Chrome OS" when inserted at the recovery screen.
I am using the correct SQUAWKS image for the chromebook device.

10/9/14 Andrew,
Actually, any Squawks will do. But try wiping the stick on a Windows machine, then use File Manager
to format it. After that, use Chromebook Recovery Utility and try again.
best,

10/9/14 andrew, not to belabor a dead horse, but Windows firewall is enabled by default if you're on anything
more up-to-date than XP and you should check for Windows Defender (enabled by default in Windows
8) and Microsoft Security Essentials. Disable them all temporarily and then turn them back on when
the image burn has completed.

10/9/14 Frank,
Just wiped the Kingston stick on a Win 7 box and long reformat to ntfs. Chromebook recovery utility
downloads/writes/verifies no problems, but still no OS when inserted into the chromebook.

linux_recovery.sh. Same problem.
Tried it again in Windows using the SanDisk stick. No problems flashing. When inserted, the
chromebook detects the recovery OS and goes to the next screen but produces "an unexpected error"
during verification.
Perhaps there's a way to get around the chrome os recovery screen and into a shell? Then we could
partition the local drive and copy the necessary files from the stick.
(And Joe, both Windows Firewall and SE are off)

10/9/14 andrew, quit trying anything with the SanDisk. SanDisk units are generally not compatible with system
restore. SanDisk does things behind the scenes to preserve the integrity of a Windows-format
partition and what they do screws up the recovery image.
andrew-p dijo:
10/9/14 Yes I know the SanDisk is problematic, but so far it is the only one that the chomebook has
recognised as a recovery image when inserted. I just thought I'd give it one more go. It's off the table
now.
I've tried the Kingston and a Lexar stick with no luck. The chromebook still isn't recognising them as
recovery disks when inserted. (they each otherwise work fine on multiple machines).

Now trying SD card recovery disk instead of usb stick. The Chromebook Recovery Utility via Windows
recognises the card when inserted, but shows it as 0.0 GB (it is a 4 GB volume). Wiped & formatted

10/9/14 If things still don't work, it's time to talk with an agent.

10/9/14 Roger that. The SD card didn't work and it still detects as 0.0 GB by the recovery app. I have one more
idea before I go the agent route...
In theory, the Chromebook Recovery Utility is just a gui for grabbing the correct system image and
writing it to the USB stick, right? So what if I parse the .conf file for my ASUS C200 SQUAWKS image,
download, and then write it directly to the removable media using an image writer? I might be able to
get it on the SD card (or a stick) and take the google recovery app out of the equation...

10/9/14 That's definitely for the best. It's frustrating we couldn't get you past this.

10/9/14 Sorry you had to do all of that, but the following quote from your first post indicates that something is
wrong with your Chromebook not your recovery methods.
OS is not detected so no recovery can be attempted. (If booting into normal mode, Chromebook
hangs at "your system is being repaired" screen)
Maybe try removing the SSD and diagnosing it on another computer.

11/9/14 Yes, there is something wrong with the chromebook (the first partition was deleted)....that's why we

are attempting recovery. Note that it is not the Chrome OS that is not detected, but the recovery OS.

15/9/14 Thanks to everyone who contributed. Spoke with a Google Agent who would not help because it was
put into developer mode and a partition was deleted (apparently they don't support the device if any
root commands are performed). I have since returned the device to the store and will be looking at
some other models. Cheers,

15/9/14 Well, lesson learned, but I just hope the store doesn't resell the mess to someone else.
