III. THEORIC INTRODUCTION
TYPES OF RELAYS
A relay is a system by which a much higher power can be controlled with a very low power
consumption.

Types of relays:
a) Electromechanical rolas
- Conventional
- Polarized
- Reed investors
b) Hibride relays
c) Reed investors Structure of a relay:

In general we can distinguish in the general scheme of a relay the following blocks:

-Input, control or excitation circuit

-Coupling circuit Exit,
-load or maneuver circuit

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
The general characteristics of any relay are
 The insulation between the input terminals and the input and output terminals
 .Easy adaptation to the control source.
 Possibility of withstanding overloads, both in the input circuit and in the output circuit
 .The two working positions in the output terminals of a relay are characterized by: in the
open state of impedance can, and in closed state of low impedance
 . For solid state relays you can add: Large number of commutations and long service life.
 Connection in the voltage step by zero, disconnection in the current step by zero
 . Absence of mechanical switching noise.
 Low command power, compatible with TTL and MOS.
 Insensitivity to shocks and blows.
 Closed to external influences by a plastic coating.

ELECTROMECHANICAL RELAYS
They are formed by a coil and contacts which can switch direct current or alternating current. We
are going to see the different types of electromechanical relay
. Armature type relays
They are the oldest and also the most used. The following scheme explains practically its
constitution and functioning. The electromagnet makes the armature vascular when excited, closing
the contacts depending on whether it is N.O or N.C (normally open or normally closed).
Mobile core relays
These have a plunger in place of the previous armor. A solenoid is used to close its contacts, due to
its greater attractive force (hence it is useful to handle high currents).

Reed or reed type relay Formed

by a glass ampule, inside which are located the contacts (can be multiple) mounted on thin metal
sheets. Said contacts are closed by means of the excitation of a coil, which is located around said
ampoule.
Polarized relays
They wear a small armor, attached to a permanent magnet. The lower end can rotate inside the
poles of one electromagnet and the other has a contact head. If the electromagnet is excited, the
armature moves and closes the contacts. If the polarity is the opposite one, it will turn in the
opposite direction, opening the contacts or closing another circuit (or several)

SOLID STATE RELAYS

A solid state relay SSR (Solid State Relay), is an electronic circuit that contains inside a circuit
triggered by level, coupled to a semiconductor switch, a transistor or a thyristor. SSR means a
product built and tested in a factory, not a device made up of independent components that have
been mounted on a printed circuit board.

Structure of the SSR:

Input or Control Circuit: Control by direct voltage: the input circuit is usually an LED
(Photodiode), alone or with a resistance in series, we can also find it with a diode in antiparallel to
avoid reversing the polarity by accident. The input levels are compatible with TTL, CMOS, and
other normalized values (12V, 24V, etc.).

lV . PROCESS

 The circuit to be installed must meet the following requirements:

 When switching on the power supply with the protection switch, the H1 lamp should be
switched on.
 Pressing the start button S2 should turn on the lamps H2, H3 and H4, turning off the lamp
H1.
 After a predetermined time by the K1T timer, you must automatically turn on the H1 lamp
and turn off the rest of the lamps.
 Pressing the stop button S2 will restart the circuit operation.
 To carry out this circuit, proceed as follows:
 Draw the schema of principle, with the requirements that are asked previously
 . Draw the general scheme of connections, according to the assembly scheme.
 Distribute the equipment on the board.
 Carry out the respective wiring between the different components.
 Perform functional tests.

Questionnaire:

1. How is the operation of a relay ?

Relay operation . the relay or relay , is an electromechanical device , which functions as a
switch
Controlled by an electrical circuit in which , by means of a coil and an electromagnet , a set
of one or several contacts is activated that allow opening or closing other electrical circuits
independent

OBSERVACIONES

 Listen carefully to the teacher's instructions.

 Look for cable of different color for each circuit so as not to make mistakes.

 Strip the cables well.

 Use gloves for protection measure.

 Teamwork. Draw the circuits well.

CONCLUSIONES
 The importance of electrical circuits is such that in any installation, however simple
or complex, we will have them and they are the basis of all electrical installations,
whether domestic or industrial.

 There is a great variety of circuits that fulfill different functions

 . The armed circuits in class will help us in the future as we will work in the plant.

 There are several types of electrical circuits depending on several factors, such as
type of electrical current, type of load, type of connection
