Mix 0.5 g of soluble starch with 5 ml of cold water and add 95 ml of boiling
water. Mix, cool and store in a glass bottle. Replace frequently or add 0.1
percent salicylic acid to the starch solution to minimize deterioration.
6.2. DESCRIPTION:
The hypochlorite solution shall be a pale, yellowish green, clear liquid and shall not
produce any sludge or turbidity when mixed with water.
6.3. PROCEDURE
6.3.1. Dissolve 2 to 3 g of potassium iodide crystals in 50 ml of water in a 250 ml
conical flask.
6.3.2. Add 10 ml of acetic acid, then pipette out the aliquot of sample into the
solution, keeping the tip of the pipette beneath the surface of the solution
until drained.
6.3.3. Titrate at once with 0.1 N Sodium Thiosulphate solution until the iodine
colour is nearly done, then add 1 ml of starch indicator solution and complete
the titration to the disappearance of the blue colour.
6.3.4. CALCULATION
Available chlorine (as Cl), % = (A x N x 0.03546) x 100
-----------------------------------
V

N = normality of the Sodium Thiosulphate solution;
V = Volume in ml of original sample in aliquot used.
6.4. IDENTIFICATION TEST
6.4.1. Litmus Paper test:
6.4.1.1. Take the appropriate volume of solution and check on the red litmus paper.
6.4.1.2. Red litmus turn in blue color.
6.4.2. Sodium Salt :
6.4.2.1. Dissolve 0.1 g of the substance under examination in 2 ml of water or 2 ml
of solution A.
6.4.2.2. Add 2 ml of 15% solution of potassium carbonate and heat to the boiling, no
precipitate is produced.
6.4.2.3. Add 4 ml of freshly prepared potassium antimonite solution and heat to
boiling.
6.4.2.4. Allow to cool in ice and if necessary scratch the inside of the test tube with
glass rod, a dense, white precipitate is formed.
6.4.3. Sodium Salt :
6.4.3.1. It should be absent.
