UNIT OUTLINE – READY, SET, GROW

Phase Lesson Outline

ENGAGE Lesson 1
Plants intro Storybook – Curious Garden
Concept map of living and non-living things
Mystery box including root, stem, leaves, flower, fruit
Brainstorm what they know about plants
Create a wonder wall using questions (I wonder what, why, how?). During
the unit, students will continually revisit the wonder wall and add their
answers to it.

Probing questions: What are the names of some plants you know? What
parts of a plant do you know? What different stages of a plant’s life do
you know?

Introduce science plant books to students (drawings, written text,

labelled diagrams, photos, tables, graphs). Students can add their own
inquiry questions into their plant books.

EXPLORE Lesson 2
Parts of plants Sing song – ‘roots and stems and leaves and flowers’
Discuss plant structures
Role play the structure of a flower (physical activity)
Graphic organiser of plants (in plant books)

Lesson 3
Plants in Our Walk around school grounds
Community Students pictures of different types of plants (trees, bushes, flowers,
grass)
Look at different plants growing in unusual areas (desert, water, parasitic
plants)
Draw the different plants they saw and different environments (video,
pictures)

Lesson 4
Leaves Visit school garden or nearest park (excursion)
Refer to Lesson Collect samples of leaves and flowers. Take pictures of different plants
1 Classification of leaves. Brainstorm keywords (adjectives)
With collected samples students create leaf rubbings, drying leaves,
collage & imprints (stations)

Lesson 5
Seeds The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle (1970). Explores the life cycle of a flower.
(Lesson 9 from Explore different types of seed families – classify according to size,
Unit) shape, edibility
Soaked bean seed experiment & record results (pg. A-143 from Sadia’s
book)
Science plant book entry

EXPLAIN & Lesson 6

ELABORATE Seed Students discuss the conditions for the germination of a seed and
Germinations investigate the conditions for plant growth
Students set up experiments to test their hypothesis
Plant seeds, observe and record growth (photos and create a timeline of
seed germination) (7-12 days)
Test misconception about plant growth (water, air, good soil and light)
First experiment acts as control group

ELABORATE Lesson 7
The use of Life with plants / Life without plants
plants Food, medicine, paper, housing, clothing etc
Oxygen & carbon dioxide

EVALUATE Lesson 8
Comprehensiveness of student plant books (Assessed using a 3-point
rubric system)
Plant life stages jumble (Primary Connections) as individual summative
assessment
Draw a plant and label its structure
Students evaluate unit with De Bono’s thinking hats (group)
