ACHIEVING A TOTAL SAFETY CULTURE THROUGH

COMMUNICATION

Introduction

Effective and appropriate communication allows safety personnel’s, safety task,


safety processes and the whole OSH system to interact purposively. This is crucial in
achieving occupational as well as environmental health and safety objectives. The
way how safety officer communicate about safety issues will influence whether or not
other staffs will understand and participate in the safety procedures. More
importantly, languages practiced always determine whether the safety processes are
accepted or rejected. The training hopefully will produce safety personnel with better
communication skills in order to create an atmosphere to promote safe behavior, and
to reinforce workers to work safely

Objective

1. Describe the basic communication process


2. Identify barriers to communication and how to overcome them
3. Using appropriate communication methods while conducting workplace safety
inspection
4. Describe how to use proper orders and standard terminology to enhance
safety and mission successes
5. Understand how emergency communication differ from daily communication
6. Giving and receiving instruction correctly during emergency
7. Use technology appropriately to enhance communication success in facing
safety issues
8. Access the multicultural communication needs of difference workers and
adjust verbal or non-verbal massage correctly
9. Learn to listen and speak actively and effectively while responding to
workplace complaints or concerns
10. Appreciate the value of emphatic listening and effective feedback
11. Enhance communication skills while dealing with specific situation, for
example when facing individuals who are passive, in danger or panic.
12. Use of non-verbal to enhance massage and accurately read the non-verbal
clues of their listener.

Module 1: Principle of basic communication


Module 2: Communication while facing with specific situations or individuals
Module 3: Emergency communication among safety officer (receiving and delivering
instructions)
Module 4: Standard orders and terminology to enhance safety mission successes
Module 5: Emphatic listening and effective feedback
