Welcome

3rd Grade
Parents!
Meet Your Third Grade Teaching Team

Your third grade teachers

work collaboratively
together each week to
share assignments, ideas,
activities, and student
growth and needs. We help
support one another inside
and outside the classroom
to create a well structured
team committed to helping
our students be successful.
2
Welcome to Third Grade:

*Responsibility is a BIG part of third grade and we expect students to start showing
more independence and responsibility through their behaviors and their work.

What can I do at home?

*Providing your student(s) with at home responsibilities (packing their lunch, snack,
unpacking yellow folders, given chores, etc.)

* Let your student “fail” a few times and help them learn from the fail (if they forget
homework, let them forget it instead of bringing it to them)
3
EL Curriculum:
WCPSS has chosen EL Education as the new
curriculum resource to support teachers in grades
3-8 for the 2018-19 school year.
1.
What is EL Education?
EL Education is a curriculum written by and for teachers
with emphasis placed on active learning and student
engagement. Classrooms are structured with highly
collaborative activities that allow students to engage in
academic conversations and investigations of rich
academic topics. EL aims to contribute to the student’s
ability to be globally competitive and active contributors
in building a better world.
EL Curriculum
How is an EL lesson structured?
- Whole group followed by practice with partners/groups
- ALL Block: Similar to the daily 5 structure. Students will
have the opportunity to read to self, work on
writing/vocabulary, use technology, and meet with the
teacher in small, differentiated reading groups.

Students will revisit the same skills several times

throughout the year. If they do not master a skill during one
quarter, they will have the opportunity to master throughout
the remainder of the year.

Homework-
In 3rd Grade, we really want our students to develop the skills
they need to be responsible and independent. In order to do this,
we expect your child to take the initiative to fill out their daily
agenda, bring their homework and folder home, complete the
assigned homework, and return it to school the next day.

Reading- your child is expected to read each night for 20 or more

minutes. This can be any book of their choice.

Math- your child is expected to complete the worksheet assigned

each night that coincides with the daily math lesson.
Each week, your child has the option to complete the weekly
Math Stars pages. This will provide your child with various Math
Enrichment opportunities and challenges.
