ME131- HOMEWORK 2

1. A fluid in a closed vessel of fixed volume, 0.14 m3, exerts a pressure of 10 bar at 250°C. If the vessel
is cooled so that the pressure falls to 3.5 bar, determine the final temperature, heat transferred, and
change of entropy.

2. A piston-cylinder device contains 1 kg of water at a temperature of 200°C and pressure of 0.8 MPa.
The water undergoes an isobaric process until it becomes a saturated liquid. Find the total work done
in the process. Is it done on or by the system?

3. Assume 2 kg of wet steam (quality = 33%) are heated at constant temperature to a saturated state. If
during the non-flow process the heat transferred in kJ is numerically equal to twice the initial enthalpy,
determine the initial and final pressure and temperature, the heat, the work, and the change the entropy.

4. A well-insulated water pump having 85% efficiency receives 90°C saturated liquid and increases the
pressure to 15 MPa. Determine the work and final enthalpy of the water.

5. A quantity of steam at a pressure of 3 MN/m2 has a dryness fraction of 0.72. The steam occupies a
volume of 0.4 m3. Heat is transferred into the steam while the pressure remains constant until the
steam becomes dry saturated. Determine the heat transferred during the constant pressure process.

6. A steady flow system receives 1 kg/s of a substance with u1=1000kJ/kg, P1=500kPa, v1=1.2m3/kg,
and v1=50m/s. There is a heat loss of 1000kJ/kg, and the fluid exits at v2=150m/s, v2=0.8m3/kg,
P2=100kPa and h2=1000 kJ/kg. Determine the power and the exit specific internal energy.

7. A 40cm x 65cm wall is to be constructed from material which has an average thermal conductivity of
1.25 W/m-C°. The two sides of the wall are maintained at 110°C and 60°C, respectively. Determine
the required thickness of the wall in mm, if the heat transfer rate is 0.70 kW.

8. The internal energy and enthalpy of a gas is 436 kJ/kg and 614 kJ/kg, respectively. Determine the
pressure of the gas if the density is 0.98 kg/m3.

9. A closed system containing a gas expands slowly in a piston-cylinder from 650 kPa and 0.12 m3 to a
final volume of 0.55 m3. Determine the work done if the pressure distribution is determined to be P
= - 350V + 625, where V is in m3 and P in kPa.

10. A soap bubble with a 15 cm radius is formed by blowing through a 2.5 cm diameter wire loop. Assume
that all the soap goes into making the bubble. The surface tension of the film is 0.02 N/m. Find the
total surface work required to make the bubble.
