NEUKQLLN UNLIMITED

The siblings Hassan (18), Lial (19) and Maradona (14) are talented musicians and
breakdancers growing up in Berlin's notorious Neukolln district. HipHop and streetdance
are their language and their passion.

Their family is from Lebanon and lives in constant danger of being deported from
Germany. To prevent this from happening, and to secure a residency permit for the
whole family, Hassan and Lial have a plan: to use their artistic talents to provide the
necessary financial support for their family.

When the two teenagers have trouble coping with the pressure, a rivalry arises over who
should be the family 1s primary t:.>readwinner.
Meanwhile, Maradona gets himself into more and more trouble, and is suspended from
school. He is at a crossroads, torn between motivation and resignation, between his
siblings' ambitious lifestyle and the street credibility of his crew.

However, his surprising qualification for a TV casting show could prove to be the turning
point. If he wins the 100,000 euro cash prize, he could be the one who saves his family.

News release

NEUKOLLN UNLIMITED takes an authentic and honest look at the lives of Neukolln
siblings Hassan, Lial and Maradona, who are fighting for their family's right to reside in
Germany. The camera is always present - at school, during their vocational training, in
their apartment, and of course where they are happiest: during their song and dance
gigs, the breakdance battles and contests.

The rapid-fire pace, lively beats and animation sequences take NEUKOLLN UNLIMITED
beyond the usual cliches about immigrants and problem neighborhoods.
HASSAN

"When you grow up, you first have to under-

stand that you aren't a foreigner. You're
German. After that, integration is simple be-
cause you say, This is my country. I want to
work here too."

UAL

"We're living in the year 2009 and meanwhile

there are some families - including my own -
who practice equality. That's a complicated
business; you have to be living in the midst of
a Muslim family. Ultimately, it has nothing to
do with Islam or religion. It just has to do with
how and where you grow up."

MARADONA

"Today I was suspended from school

again ....Today of all days I said, I'm going to
all my classes and I'm going to work hard
and everything. And then you go there, and
some teacher comes in and says, "Go home."
It's like you have this beautiful house, and
then somebody comes in, boom, like a mis-
sile. Right on the first day."
DURING A FIGHT, HASSAN
ACCUSES HIS SISTER OF NOT
GIVING THEIR MOTHER ENOUGH
OF HER EARNINGS. LIAL
RESPONDS ANGRILY TO HER
BROTHER'S ACCUSATIONS.

Lia l: I give Mom money every month.

Not a lot but ...

Hassan: It's not about how much.

Lial: Don't talk shit, man.

I pay my own medical insurance.
Have you ever thought of that?

Hassan : OK, how much is that? 240? 250?

Lial: Yeah, and I have to pay rent from that?

How much do I have left? Nothing.

Hassan: How much rent do you give her?

Lia l: I don't feel like talking, really.

Ha ssan: I 'm listening the whole time.

It's just my opinion.

Lia l: But your opinion is disgusting.

Hassan: It's not disgusting.

Lial: You only listen to other people.

Hassan: What other people?

I see you at home, other people don't.

Lial : You exaggerate.

Hassan: I was completely normal.

Lia l: No you weren 't .

Hassa n: I exaggerated, as always.

It's always like that, always will be.

Lial : Mind your own bullshit!

The film music was written and produced by composers Eike Hosenfeld, Moritz Denis and Tim
Stanzel (TonbOro Berlin). The musicians were inspired not only by the hip-hop and dance music
played at breakdance battles, but also the traditiona l music of the Middle East.

This eclectic mix reflects the protagonists' life-between-two-cultures, and paints an accoustic
portrait of daily life in Neukolln. Other songs in the film were written and performed by the
protagonists themselves, produced by the Berlin independent label Foreign Flavour. Particularly
noteworthy are Hassan's political rap lyrics, which are autobiographical and accurately reflect the
attitudes of many youths with an immigrant background.

One of the film's main focuses is, of course, dance, which for our protagonists is not merely a
hobby, but almost a philosphy.

"Dance to survive" could well be our heroes' and

heroine's motto. It is through dance that they
hope to gain financial independence for their
family, thus securing their permanent residency
status in Germany. In addition to the different
subgenres of streetdance, a variety of other
dance genres will be highlighted, for example
modern dance and expressionistic dance.

Especially the latter is favored by Lial, Hassan

and Maradona to express their attitude toward
life. Thus, in "Neukolln Unlimited" these dances
serve as a cinematic metaphor for the siblings'
coming of age.
For the filmmakers, the protagonists' process of coming to terms with their past plays a major role
in the dramaturgy of this film. In their own individual ways, each of the three young people must
process the trauma resulting from being deported from Germany. Each of them must cope with
this trauma in their own individual manner.

To convey these experiences credibly and to take the audience along on this emotional journey,
Agostino I mondi and Dietmar Ratsch decided it was important not to show the historical context
by using the classical documentary style of so-called "talking heads'' giving interviews.

They wanted to find a way to convey the experience of being deported and of feeling like a
stranger in one's homeland, in this case Lebanon. They needed something that would remain in
the audiences' memories long after having seen the film .

Because graffiti is a major artistic method of expression in the hip-hop and breaker scene, the
directors decided to portray past events in the style of comic strips.

Comic strip artist Benjamin Kniebe developed the drawings. Animation specialist Julia Dufek made
the individual drawings come to life. The challenge of the animated sequences lay in portraying
the drama without appearing unintentionally funny.

Since "Neukolln Unlimited" is a low-budget production, complicated animation scenes were

avoided and drama was created with the help of music, sound design, and, especially, Hassan's
anecdotes.
AGOSTINO IMONDI

Ever since I began to work in the media, the

issue of human rights has always been of
particular importance to me. I was always
especially interested in the fates of people
seeking asylum. I was primarily interested in
their experiences in their host country, as
opposed to their back stories in their native
countries. Western governments like to
emphasize their commitment to democracy
and human rights. Nevertheless, many of
their laws must be described as inhuman.
Thus, government attempts to regulate
immigration often collide irreconcilably with
the private destinies of real individuals.
In the media we are often confronted with tragic
stories of immigrants. In many of these
productions I am bothered by the lack of strong
and emancipated people who refuse to be
victimized, choosing instead to resist. These
characters often lack complexity, which would
make the protagonists more authentic and the
films more credible. This is precisely what
''Neukolln Unlimited" is all about. Lial, Hassan
and Maradona are three very personable young
people who are actively building their future,
who face plenty of difficulties, but who choose
to carry on. Sometimes, too, they are coarse in
an innocent, youthful manner. But to me, that's
part of their charm.
To me, the fact that Hassan and Lial may
remain here, thanks to their temporary
residency status, while the rest of the family
is to be deported after 16 years, reflects the
absurdity of an immigration policy that is
implemented all too often without
consideration of the individuals involved. Our
politicians like to point out that the family is
the backbone of our society - only to tear
apart families with such laws. The selfsame
politicians bristle at the lack of integration -
yet deport people who have lived perfectly
integrated lives here for years
To me, Maradona's attempts to support the
family by competing in a tv talent show
demonstrate the very limited possibilities
available to ethnic minorities. They may be
good enough for the media's entertainment
circus, but other careers are almost
impossible for them to attain. My 14-year-old
protagonist is already thinking about these
issues. He is motivated - as are most of his
contemporaries - by the desire for fame and
fortune. Because "exotics" are en vogue in
the media, these shows convey the
impression that everyone has an equal shot
at success. Young people with an immigrant
background are hip. But are they really
accepted by society? Or are they merely just
fodder to confirm the stereotypes?

The Akkouch siblings' battle is a fight to

secure a decent livelihood in this country. It
is a struggle for the security and safety that
only a family can really provide. It is a fight
to resist being deported to a foreign country
that, because of its political instability, is
anything but safe.

Our film shows people in a particular

environment who are especially affected by
the discrepancies of our time. Emigration to
Europe is not a marginal issue; it is one of
the biggest challenges facing Western
nations. There are no easy solutions. We
want to show individuals who are holding
their ground in a conflict-ridden context
deeply influenced by societal developments,
necessities and individual interests.
DIETMAR RATSCH

When I heard about the Akkouch family, I was

immediately convinced their story should be
told in a documentary. During the initial
photoshoot of the youths I was impressed by
their authenticity and eagerness. These takes
have made it into the finished film.

The family's fight against deportation has been

going on for 16 long years. The oldest three
children, Lial, Hassan and Maradona, are not
only very dedicated, but also very strong and
fascinating personalities. Growing up for the
most part without a father, each of them has
had to struggle for his or her position within the
fam ily. From this inner battle, they seem to
draw the strength needed to combat the
government's attempts to tear their family
apart.

Company Profile

INDI FILM was set up in 2001 by the producer Arek

Gielnik and director Dietmar Ratsch as a documentary
and feature film production company in Ludwigsburg.
In 2006 INDI FILM established its branch office in Berlin.

INDI FILM GmbH

Konigsallee 43
D-71638 Ludwigsburg

INDI FILM has worked successfully with young talents as well as established authors. We
produce genuine and authentic films with 'un certa in regard'. Our attention's drawn to cre-
ative documentaries demanding in both content and style. With our documentaries we
don't want to report about, but experience matters of different regions, cultures, and pers-
pectives. For these reasons we produce our topics as 'grand-format' and for cinema au-
diences if possible.

Managing Director/ Producer AREK GIELNIK graduated from Stuttgart Media University
(HdM) in the year 2000. During his studies as well as after his graduation as a master of
audio-visual media, he was employed as a Unit Production Manager with the German
broadcaster SOdwestrundfunk (SWR). With INDI FILM Arek Gielnik as the executive/ dele-
gate producer is responsible for project-development, -financing and - production issues.

Managing Director/ Author and Director DIETMAR RATSCH worked eight years as an inde-
pendent cinematographer before he graduated from Baden-WOrttemberg Film Academy as
a director of documentary film . With INDI FILM Dietmar Ratsch manages the post-produc-
tion department. Apart from that he directs his own documentaries within our portfolio and
contributes creatively to projects of other cl ients as a director of photography and/ or script
advisor.

Creative Producer SONIA OTTO joined the company in 2002. She is in charge of documen-
tary development and project monitoring . Sonia Otto is a graduate of Cultural Sciences
from the Humboldt University Berlin and of audio-visual Communication in Seville, Spain.
She worked as an independent author and assistant director on several shorts and docu-
mentaries.

INDI FILM has its roots in the documentary " Iced Lemonade for Hong Li" which today's
managing directors Dietmar Ratsch and Arek Gielnik produced in 1999/2000. After com-
pleting th is project, that had its premier at the Berlinale 2001,. they founded the INDI FILM
GmbH at Ludwigsburg, Germany.

Over the first years INDI FILM focused on the production of creative documentaries, but al-
ready "Iced Lemonade for Hong Li" inspired Arek Gielnik and Dietmar Ratsch to write a fea-
ture film script. In 2004 "Still Memories" (WT) formed the foundation for the production of
feature films. In the same year Arek Gielnik participated in the leading training and project
development programme for European and international audiovisual producers (EAVE)
with this project. Since then INDI FILM developed various feature film scripts, among
others the children's film "Nelly's Abenteuer" by Jens Becker.
INDI FILM was set up in Ludwigsburg, due to our relations to talented professio-
nals from the Baden-WOrttemberg Film Academy, the TV-Broadcaster SOdwes-
trundfunk (SWR) and the MFG Film Funding Baden-WOrttemberg. From scratch
INDI FILM produced six creative documentaries for the TV-slot "Junger Dokumen-
tarfilm" for the SWR. Furthermore INDI FILM cooperates for several years with
broadcasters like ARD, ZDF, RBB, WDR, 3SAT, ARTE and ORF. Several productions
have been released in cinemas before their broadcast and were awarded at natio-
nal and international film festivals. For example:

AFGHAN'S DON'T FLIRT

by Jochen Frank, Festivals: et al. Hof Int. Film Festival 2004 - EASTMAN Award,
German Television Award 2005 (Funding Prize), Funding Prize of the Baden-
WOrttemberg Film Industry

Prize 2009, Prix Europe 2009 - Special Citation, DOK Leipzig - Golden Dove 2008,
Funding Prize of the Baden-WOrttemberg Film Industry

INDI FILM cooperated on an international level with Seppia Strasbourg ("Tomb 33

- an Egyptian Mystery"), Nikolaus Geyrhalter Filmproduktion Austria ("Die Vater-
sucherin"). We coproduced documentaries on national basis with the production
companies: noirfilm Ka rlsruhe ("Neukolln Unlimited") and atmosfilm West ("Being
Kosher", a Gerd-Ruge-Scolarship winning concept of director Ruth Olshan) and line
produced with Gebrueder Beetz Filmproduktion Berlin ("Zwischen Wahnsinn und
Kunst - Die Sammlung Prinzhorn" an Adolf- Grimme-Award winner in 2008) as
well as with Boller and Brot Productions ("Der GroBe Navigator") .
