Chapter Bylaws 2018-2019

of the Irene Elthorpe Chapter


of the National Honor Society
of Gladwin High School

Article I. Name and Purpose


Section 1. The name of this chapter shall be the Irene Elthorpe Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Section 2. The purpose of this chapter shall be to encourage and recognize the attainment of high
standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character in the students at Gladwin High School.

Article II. Elections of Chapter Officers


Section 1. Chapter officers shall be elected in the spring for the next school year. The election shall
take place after the selection of new NHS candidates but before the spring induction ceremony.

Section 2. Only the non-graduating NHS members and non-graduating newly selected NHS
candidates shall cast votes in the election of officers for the following school year.

Section 3. The term of office shall be for one year beginning on the day following the last day of the
school year and ending on the last day of the next school year.

Section 4. The chapter officers shall include president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

Section 5. Nominations and elections for each office shall take place at the meeting in the following
order: president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

Section 6. All candidates for office must either be self-nominated or be nominated by another voter; in
the latter case, the candidate must accept the nomination in order to be considered for the office.

Section 7. The election for each office shall be held by secret ballot with runoffs, if necessary to
obtain a majority vote.

Article III. Duties of Officers


Section 1. The president shall preside at chapter meetings. The president shall be responsible for
organizing and implementing chapter activities delegated to him/her by the advisors.

Section 2. The vice president shall serve in the president's absence and assist the president and advisor
in chapter activities.

Section 3. The secretary shall record the minutes of chapter and executive board meetings. The
secretary will assist the president and advisor with chapter records and correspondence.

Section 4. The treasurer shall write vouchers to disburse funds, acknowledge receipt of funds, assist
the advisor with purchase orders, keep accurate accounts of receipts and expenditures in the chapter
ledger, and report at chapter meetings the chapter's financial condition to the members.
Article IV. Meetings
Section 1. A minimum of one meeting a month is required.

Section 2. Additional meetings may be called with the approval of the advisors.

Section 3. All members must attend monthly meetings or otherwise inform the NHS advisors.

Article V. Member Obligations


Section 1. Each member shall pay dues of $5 to help offset our chapter dues.

Section 2. Each member shall have the responsibility to attend all chapter meetings.

Section 3. Each member shall serve the school at Parent Teacher Conferences (Fall and/or Spring).

Section 4. Each member shall serve a minimum of 25 services hours:


 5 hours of academic assistance (working in Academic Center, tutoring, etc…)
 5+ hours serving with NHS obligations (chapter projects, both those established at the
beginning of each school year and those which arise from need during the school year)
 5+ hours serving in ways that you find outside of the NHS obligations
 Remaining hours can be a combination of any of the above

Section 5. Members need to fulfill GPA requirements of a 3.5 or better.

Section 6. Members need to continue to respect his/her school and community.

Section 7. Members must maintain behavior befitting of a NHS member (especially at any school
function, while in class or whenever representing our society, school or community).

Section 8. All members will be asked to review the bylaws yearly. Each member will be asked to sign
a statement indicating they have read and understand the chapter bylaws.

Article VI. The Faculty Council


Section 1. The Faculty Council shall establish procedures for membership selection, review of
membership, dismissal and scholarship nominations.

Section 2. Behavior resulting in expulsion or suspension or behavior unbefitting of a NHS member


will be reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine the individual's future in NHS.
