ZXSDR FDD GUL BS8700 Product Description

1 Product Overview

1.1 Introduction

With the multi-mode era coming, ZTE, who is dedicated to providing comprehensive
network solutions and delivering the future-oriented quality network for the operators,
developed the ground breaking SDR unified platform with the essential feature to support
multi-mode and multi-band radio access.

Based on this innovative SDR platform, ZTE promotes a series of base stations to satisfy
different scenario requirements, including Indoor Macro, Outdoor Macro, Distributed,
Outdoor Micro, and Mini BTS.

These SDR-based serial base stations aim to design a unified network which can bring
the seamless experience to operators. In GSM, UMTS, LTE or mixed modes, it enables
operators to save CAPEX and OPEX significantly because they only need to deploy one
Uni-Radio Access Network, compared with the independent GSM, UMTS or LTE
network.

ZXSDR BS8700 (hereinafter BS8700) is the new generation of distributed software

defined radio (SDR) base station. It consists of BBU (B8200) and series of RRUs. It can
be flexibly configured as a GERAN BTS, a UTRAN Node B, a LTE eNodeB, or a G/U/L
multi-mode base station.

The networking diagram of BS8700 and RNC/BSC is shown in Figure 1-1

1.2 Benefits

ZXSDR BS8700 provides the following benefits to operators.

 Flexible Multi-Band Multi-Mode Networking, Smooth Evolution

ZXSDR BS8700 is the multi-carrier, multi-mode distributed base station of ZXSDR

BTS series. By adopting advanced MicroTCA platform and SDR technology,
BS8700 supports GPRS/EDGE/E-EDGE, UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and LTE
simultaneously. Its main advantage is the flexibility that brings the possibility to
support GSM, UMTS and LTE in a single base station.

 RRU - Compact Design, Light, Easy Installation

ZTE released the magic series of RRUs, the new generation of SDR RRUs, to
comply with the further requirements for lower power consumption, smaller space
occupation and higher performance of products from operators, e.g. R8861 with 9.9
liters and 12 kg only.

 BBU - Large Capacity, Easy Expansion

10 ZTE Confidential Proprietary

ZXSDR FDD GUL BS8700 Product Description

To adapt to the rapid expansion of network development and the prosperity of

multi-mode network, the latest BBU boards are released with higher processing
capacity. The capacity indices of new boards surpass legacy ones, including RRC
connected user number, cell number, bandwidth and throughput. The increase in
the board capacity improves the overall capacity of BBU. In addition, the new
boards can be mixed used with the legacy ones, which provide flexibility during
upgrade.

 RRU with Multiple TXs, Lower CAPEX and Higher Performance

The RRUs in ZTE SDR family consist of a variety of transmitter number, e.g. 1T2R,
2T4R, 3T6R, etc. This design provides more choices for customers to construct the
network. RRUs of 2T4R and 3T6R are illustrated as follows.

ZTE’s particular 2T4R RRU supports 2 sectors in GSM/UMTS mode or 2T4R in

LTE mode. In the former case, one 2T4R RRU serves as two cells and fewer RRUs
are required in the network construction. In the latter case, the spectrum efficiency
is optimized and the network uplink performance is improved.

For R8863 with three sectors, it enables operators to uses only one R8863 module
instead of three RRUs for one three-cell site. Higher integration leads to fewer
modules, less space, lower load-bearing requirements and faster installation
procedure.

 RRU with Full Working Bandwidth Capability, High Resource Utilization

To meet the growing demands for wide working bandwidth, RRUs with full working
bandwidth are planned and released. For frequency spectrums become scarce,
resources allocated for operators tend to be characterized with fragmentation and
large span. RRUs with full working bandwidth integrate more spectrum resources
and help to decrease hardware investment exponentially. (This is the maximum
bandwidth of the RF modules. Please make the actual module as the standard.)

 High PA Efficiency, Low Power Consumption

The PA of RRU achieves high efficiency with ZTE patent Doherty, Digital
Pre-Distortion (DPD) and Dynamic Power Trace (D-PT) technologies. The PA

1.3 Application Scenarios

BS8700 develops a new solution for GSM/UMTS/LTE multi-mode network and its
evolution. It can be applied in dense urban, urban, suburban, rural area, highway or
indoor environment, and fully meets operators’ requirements in different stages and
scenarios.

6 Ancillary Equipment for BS8700

Besides the BS8700 main equipments, there should be ancillary equipments in field for
the site support purpose, such as power supply, battery, transmission, supervision and
etc. If the site is located outdoor, the cabinet with certain water- and dust-proof capability
should be provisioned to accommodate equipments, especially BBU. In this chapter,
three types of cabinets are introduced to support BS8700 in outdoor applications. Series
of cabinets meet with different accommodation requirements of power, transmission or
other third-party equipments. The details are as follows.

6.1 Site Support Cabinet Description

6.1.1 Type 1 - Cabinet BC8910B

BC8910B is the largest cabinet out of three cabinets, including baseband unit shelf, fan
and ventilation system, AC/DC power system and additional 4U space reserved for
transmission or other equipments. Moreover, BC8910B contains 2 sets of batteries,
which maximally supports 2*150AH.

BC8911B has similar hardware structure with BC8910B, except that it contains 1 set of
battery and 11U space reserved for transmission or other equipments.

BC8910B/BC8911B hardware architecture is shown in the following figure.

6.1.2 Type 2 - Cabinet BC8910A

BC8910A is the medium-sized one in the three cabinets. It can be used when there are
auxiliary devices should be contained but without battery. There are mainly five parts in
BC8910A: baseband unit, power supply system, power distribution module, heat
exchanging system and reserved space for transmission or other equipments. Together
with the fan system and ventilation vessel, the heat exchanger located in the cabinet
door makes the heat exchanging system. The fan system contains fan control element
(FCE) and 6 fans. BC8910A hardware architecture is shown in the following figure.
