Heart Attack Alert

NBw rNronMATIoN about about the connection between arthritis
and an increased risk ofheart attack has special importance for Blood
Type A women. Researchers at the Brigham and Women's Hospital
found that women with rheumatoid arthritis had twice the risk of heart
attack compared to those without it. Those who had the joint condi-
tion for at least ten years faced triple the heart attack risks ofnonsuf-
ferers. There is plenty of evidence that Blood Type A individuals who
are overweight, have high cholesterol, and are diabetic place them-
selves at grave risk for heart attack. Now we see that there is an arthri-

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds can serve as an important secondary source of protein
for Blood Type A. Laboratory research has identified at least five nat-
ural phytochemicals in nuts that regulate the immune system and act
as antioxidants. SUPER BENEFICIAL for Blood Type A are flaxseeds
and walnuts, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseeds arc par-
ticularly rich in lignans, which can help lower the number of receptors
for epidermal growth factor. High levels of EGF can trigger inflam-
matory conditions.

Beans and Legurnes
Blood Type A thrives on vegetable proteins found in many beans and
legumes, although a few beans contain immunoreactive proteins and
should be avoided. SUPER BENEFICIAL beans and legumes for
Blood Type A include soy beans and their by-products. They are a
good source of essential amino acids, and they contain isoflavones that
can inhibir inflammation-producing selectins from being over-
expressed in the blood vessels.

Grains and Starcl.es

Blood Type A benefits from a moderate consumption of grains. If you
have arthritis, you should limit or avoid wheat and corn products. This
is especially important for non-secretors. The agglutinin in whole
wheat can aggtavate inflammatory conditions and derail the proper re-
sponse of the immune system. This lectin can sometimes be milled
out ofthe grain or destroyed by sprouting.
