Mr. Michael Smetana

Lockheed Martin
12257 South Wadsworth Boulevard
Littleton, CO 80125

Dear Mr. Smetana:

I am very interested in the internship with Lockheed Martin through the Jefferson County Executive
Internship program. Currently, I am a senior at Golden Senior High School and am interested in a career
in aerospace engineering and science. I visited the Lockheed Waterton Canyon campus in April 2018 as
well as looked at the website for Lockheed Martin and was impressed to learn about the diversity in
careers, the pride employees have for Lockheed Martin, outreach in the community including STEM
education amongst students. I have a passion for aerospace, mathematics, physics, biology,
epidemiology, and engineering and I plan on pursuing these subjects in college. Through this internship, I
am looking for an opportunity to gain real world experience that will allow me to learn how to advocate
ideas on a professional level, improve networking, understanding of the aerospace community and the
skills I’d be using in that career. While I can learn a lot from working with this organization, I hope that
my skills and abilities can prove beneficial in my internship.

I have a very strong academic record having taken; honors Earth Science, honors Biology, and honors
Chemistry, as well as Aerospace Engineering, AP Physics (Algebra based), Geometry, Algebra 2 and
honors Precalculus/Trigonometry and AP Calculus AB. My focus area in college will be in engineering
and science as I am hoping that by having this internship, I will narrow my career plans to a specific
major. I also possess basic computer skills as I have taken a variety of computer aided drafting and 3D
printing classes including those for mechanical, architectural, and general engineering. Although I excel
in these areas, I would like to apply these skills to research, science and chemistry/biology as I have
noticed that careers of this manner exist at Lockheed Martin. I am excellent in Google applications
including sheets, docs, drive and drawings and am willing to learn the skills for Microsoft Word, Excel
and engineering-based software to advance my ability to work efficiently through classes for productivity
during the internship.
In addition to my academic accomplishments above, I’ve also participated in the CASIS National Design
Challenge beginning in my seventh-grade year. My school’s STEM education program worked to develop
a habitat that studied if worms are able to vermi-compost in a microgravity environment (This is the
process of worms decomposing waste and creating a byproduct of fertilizer.) On June 28, 2015, we
experienced the emotions of losing two years’ worth of work to the SpaceX CRS-7 Falcon 9 failure. For
the next 2 years, a small group of the original students worked to improve the habitat and change designs
for a more efficient model. The second launch of the SpaceX CRS 11 Falcon 9 proved successful in
docking with the International Space Station and in 31 days the experiment was complete. My junior year,
the remaining students and I worked to complete the NASA Final Report, finalizing the project in
February 2018. This gave me relevant experience of the engineering field and an understanding of how
devastating setbacks influence my motivation for success. I gained specific skills of meeting deadlines,
work ethic, professional presentations and plan to expand on those abilities with the Executive High
School Internship.
I have gained valuable experience through my leadership role as a Treasurer and as a member of the
Interact Club (A Rotatory based club working with volunteer opportunities and projects in the Golden and
greater Denver area.). Through my volunteer initiatives, I have learned to work as an effective team
member and develop my collaborative and leadership skills. I am also a recipient of the National Society
of High School Scholars as my scholastic achievement was commended by my high school and I was
recently awarded academic excellence in my AP Calculus courses for understanding of the concepts and
abilities to teach others. My ability to be involved in multiple extracurricular activities including golf
team, rock climbing team, and gymnastics while maintaining excellent grades (3.9 unweighted GPA and
4.2 weighted GPA) shows that I can handle responsibilities and meet deadlines.

I am confident that my academic background, personal experiences, and strong work ethic make me an
ideal candidate for an internship at Lockheed Martin. I am very excited to learn about the engineering and
science fields as well as have the opportunity to work with professionals at Lockheed Martin and the
space industry. Please feel free to call me at 303-906-9152 or email me at anissashull@gmail.com.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Anissa Shull
