INDIAN AFFAIRS
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the annual conference – Rajaswa Gyan Sangam, 2017 in New
Delhi on 1st of Sep. The Conference have been jointly organised by the Central Board of Direct Taxes
(CBDT) and the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).
• The deadline for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar has extended by four months to
31st December announced by the government.
• On September 1, 2017 Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Vijay Goelhas announced that a
new Youth Sports Centre to be built at Alipur, Delhi. Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and Sports
Authority of India (SAI) will jointly create and run this unique Youth Sports Centre.
• The Kerala Tourism department has launched a campaign called ‘Yalla Kerala’ (Yalla means lets go). It has
been launched to target tourists from Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and
Qatar.
• India’s first indigenous sniper rifle was launched at the rifle factory in West Bengal.Its total cost is Rs 2.5
lakh and weighing 6.7 Kg.The rifle has a shooting range of 800 meters.
• With an aim to improve the condition of small and marginal farmers, the Union Ministry of Science and
Technology is planning to create Farmer Zone which is a collective open source data platform for smart
agriculture using biological research.
• On September 1,2017,Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has approved the constitution of an Empowered
Steering Committee (ESC) on the basis of the recommendations of the interim report of the8-member Task
Force headed by AbinavBindra.It will increase India’s medal prospects in forthcoming Olympic games
including 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.
• Environment Ministry will launch an environment awareness initiative. Under which an online environmental
quiz competition named “Prakriti Khoj” an Environment Quiz to be conducted at the national
level.The quiz is being launched on 5th of September on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
• On September 3,2017, the cabinet got extended and reshuffled for the third time. Modi expanded his council
of ministers twice–first on November 9, 2014 and then on July 5, 2016. Nine new Ministers of state were
inducted into the Union Council of Ministers. Four Ministers of state were elevated to the cabinet rank.
• On September 2 ,2017 Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal banned dumping of waste at the Ghazipur landfill
site because on September 1 ,2017 a mountain of waste collapsed into a canal, killing two people. Baijal
ordered immediate halt to dumping of solid waste at the landfill and clearing the site within two years.
• The Karnataka government has decided to make education free for all girls from Class 1 to graduation level in
all public and aided private schools and colleges from the next academic year announced on 2nd Sept 2017.
Under this scheme, student must pay the fees first at the time of admission and later get it reimbursed by the
government.
• Cell for IPR Promotions and Management (CIPAM), which works under the Department of Industrial Policy
and Promotion (DIPP) in the ministry, has started an “#LetsTalkIP” initiative to promote Indian Geographical
Indications.
• ‘Ye India ka time hai’ event was organized at National Institute of Technology, Raipur Chhattisgarh on 3rd of
Sept.The event was held as per the directives of HRD ministry to mark India’s 70 years of independence and
75 years of the Quit India movement.
• Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, River
Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has flagged off a fleet of first batch of 1000 E-rickshaws from Huda
City Centre metro station in Gurugram on 3rd of Sept 2017. The E rickshaw fleet is being operated by
Treasure Vase Ventures Private Limited in partnership of Delhi Metro, under the SmartE brand name.
• The Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation constituted a task
force for speedy implementation of various ongoing Namami Gange program.
Namami Gange programme is a program of Union Government aiming at integrating various efforts to clean
and protect River Ganga.

• On 5th September 2017, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Home Minister Rajnath
Singhflaged off the first run of the Lucknow Metro from the Transport Nagar Metro Station in
Lucknow.The 8.5-km-long ‘Priority Corridor’ from Transport Nagar to Charbagh, which is part of the Phase-1
of the project, will be operational for the public from 6 am to 10 pm everyday.
• On 5th September 2017, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched two new contraceptives,
an injectible MPA (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) under the ‘Antara’ programme and contraceptive
pill ‘Chhaya’ in New Delhi. The contraceptives are said to be safe and highly effective.
• On 5th September 2017, Leader of the Green Revolution Dr.M.S.Swaminathan and Padma Shri
Dr.H.Sudarshan launched the National Nutrition Strategy, along with Vice Chairman of Niti Aayog Dr.Rajiv
Kumar and Member of Niti Aayog Dr.Vinod Paul.
• Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani has launched “Gyakunj e-class project” from Shahpur primary school in
Gandhinagar announced on 4th Sept 2017. Under this initiative, interactive e-class will be launched with
smart board.In the first phase, 550 schools will be covered under the ‘Gyankunj Project’ and
gradually standard 5th to 9th of every schools of the state will cover under the project.
• Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and
Hospital (SLNMCH) in the tribal-dominated district of southern Odisha on 4th Sept. 2017. The SLNMCH in
Koraput has been established at a cost of Rs. 192 crore.
• In Assam, the state govt. has set up a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Cell for implementation of DBT across
schemes in the Country. It helps in coordinating efforts at the State Level in taking the DBT initiative forward
with immediate effect.
• Assam government will upgrade employment exchanges to Modern Career Centres announced on 6th of Sep.
2017. All modern facilities including counselling will be provided at the proposed career centres.
• As part of labour law reforms, the Government has undertaken the exercise of rationalisation of the 38 Labour
Acts by framing 4 labour codes viz Code on Wages, Code on Industrial Relations, Code on Social Security
and Code on occupational safety, health and working conditions.It subsumes 4 existing Laws,
1. The Minimum Wages Act, 1948;
2. The Payment of Wages Act, 1936;
3. The Payment of Bonus Act, 1965; and
4. The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.
• Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced a new programme named ‘Jala Siriki
Haarati’. It is a programme offering prayers to water bodies and to create awareness among the public
regarding water preservation announced on 6th sept. 2017. The programme will be held on September 6, 7
and 8 across the state.
• On 6th September 2017, an Expert Task Force was constituted with the NITI Aayog Vice Chairman, Dr.Rajiv
Kumar, as its Chairperson to provide a major thrust to job creation by enhancing India’s exports.
• On 6th September 2017, Home Ministry announced that Chiefs of central armed police forces like Central
Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF) and other central agencies have been
empowered to spend up to Rs.15 crore for executing major projects and Rs.1 crore for minor works, including
repairing of residential buildings.
• Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Andhra
Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) on 6th of Sept. 2017.The pact has been signed to connect
Vijayawada and Amaravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh in Guntur district.After conducting the
feasibility study, in the second phase of the project, the company will construct and build the first hyperloop
in the country.
• On 8th September 2017, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Ministry of Water Resources entered into a
Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore for development of
ground water flow models and preparation of aquifer management plans for Karnataka, in New Delhi.
• First water ATM has been inaugurated by Telangana State Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy at Nalgonda X
Roads on 7th of Sept. 2017.It will provide affordable, 24×7 safe water access in Hyderabad.
• The government has allowed import of 3 lakh tonnes of raw sugar at a concessional duty of 25% import duty
under Open General License (Tariff Rate Quota) has been allowed through millers/refiners on 7th of Sept.
2017. The imports will be allowed through the ports namely Tuticorin, Karaikal, Chennai, Mangalore,
Kakinada, Gangavaram and Vishakapatnam in the South.
• On 8th September 2017, in New Delhi the Ministry of Civil Aviation introduced new rules for the formation
of a national No – Fly list that bans unruly passengers from travelling in airplanes.
• On 7th September 2017, a new study claimed that one of the biodiversity-rich uninhabited island of
Lakshadweep ‘Parali I’ has vanished due to coastal erosion.Parali I island of Laskshadweep has been eroded

completely and vanished.The island was a part of Bangaram chain of islands, and was 0.032 square km in area
in 1968.

• On September 1,2017,Assam Government has extended term of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA),
1958 and declared entire state a Disturbed Area for six more months under section 3 of AFSPA act.This is for
first time state government has extended AFSPA and Disturbed Area provision on its own. In the past,
AFSPA provisions in state were always extended by the centre.
• Australia and East Timor have agreed on key elements of a maritime boundary and revenue sharing from
anatural gas field beneath the seabed between the two countries announced on 2nd Sep 2017.Australia and
Timor-Leste have resolved their bitter and long-running dispute over maritime boundaries in the Timor Sea. It
is being described as a “landmark day” in the relationship between the two nations.
• On September 1 ,2017, An international team of sand artists has built the world’s tallest sandcastle in
Duisburg, in the Ruhr region, Germanyafter the city’s attempt failed last year.It was 54.5ft (16.68 meters) high
and its theme is tourism.It is the new Guinness World Record for tallest sandcastle.
FOREIGN VISITS
Arun Jaitley visit to Japan 2017
• On 4th September 2017, Mr.Arun Jaitley left to Japan for a two day visit. During the meeting issues relating to
the US-2 amphibious aircraft were also figured out.
• The two sides also agreed to commence technical discussions for research collaboration in the areas
of Unmanned Ground Vehicles and Robotics.
• India plans to buy the US-2 ShinMaywa aircraft from Japan for its navy. Last year, China had reacted angrily
to reports that Japan plans to sell weapons to India at cheaper prices, saying that such a move is disgraceful.
Swiss president Doris Leuthard is on a three-day visit to India
• Swiss president Doris Leuthard will begin her three day visit to India on August 6 2017. The visit is
significant as Switzerland is the chair of the Nuclear Suppliers Groupwhere India has been seeking
membership.
• Both countries will sign trade agreements and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on railway
infrastructure.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
• Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under Ministry of Power, Government of India has launched
UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable Lighting for All) Scheme in the State of Melaka, Malaysia on 6th of Sept.
2017. UJALA’s impact in Malaysia will bring about clean energy, contribute to climate change targets and
save the already dwindling energy resources.
• Lebanese President Michel Aoun has officially signed an animal welfare and protection law. It guarantees that
domestic and wild animals will be legally protected from abuse in the country announced on 30th Aug 2017.
• Recently on 18 July 2017 India and China jointly submitted a proposal to the World Trade Organisation
(WTO) calling for the elimination of farm subsidies by developed countries. In WTO context, this trade
distorting farm subsidies is calledAggregate Measurement of Support (AMS) or ‘Amber Box’. It is a
prerequisite for consideration of other reforms in domestic support negotiations.
• The world’s largest and powerful X-ray laser- European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) presented in
Hamburg, Germany.The XEFL is series of 3.4-kilometer tunnels up to 38 meters underground near the city of
Hamburg.It took 8 years to build 1.5-billion-euro ($1.7 billion) facility.
• The “artificial quake” in North Korea thought to be its sixth nuclear test was five to six times more powerful
than the fifth nuclear test.As per the South’s Yonhap news agency reported it was 9.8 times more powerful
than the tremor from Pyongyang’s fifth test.
• The Tajikistan government has banned its women from wearing veils and Tajikistan government has
introduced a legislation, wherein it has asked the women to “stick to traditional national clothes and culture”.

• According to the US space agency NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson is set to depart the International Space
Station (ISS) and return to Earth after completing a 288-day long mission.
• The New Development Bank (NDB) of the five nations has approved $1.4 billion loans for sustainable
development projects in China, India and Russia. For India, the bank has approved $470 million loan for
Madhya Pradesh’s Multi-Village Rural Drinking Water Supply Scheme Project.
• Nepal has signed UN assistance package for a USD 635 million for 2018-2022. The UNDAF lays out the

• Nepal’s government has enacted a new law which aimed at stopping the practice of forcing a woman who is

• Nepal’s Parliament has endorsed an electoral law for upcoming elections to the federal and provincial council
which bars people involved in corruption and criminal offences to stand as candidates.

• According to the reports, an Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Lok Sabha Sumitra
Mahajan,refused to be a part of the Bali Declaration adopted at the World Parliamentary Forum on
Sustainable Development held at Nusa Dua in Indonesia.India has refused to be a part of the Bali Declaration
to show of solidarity with Myanmar.
• The Department of Financial Services has fined USD 225 million to Pakistan’s Private lender Habib Bank and
its New York branch announced on 8th Sept. 2017.The bank has failed to comply with laws and regulations
designed to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and other illicit financial transactions.

BUSINESS
• India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) will meet this month in order to conclude their long
pending negotiations on FTA (Free Trade Agreement). Nirmala Sitharaman said that India would look into
“every concern” of foreign investors on intellectual property rights (IPR) and investment protection.
• The first consignment of 30 MT of High Speed Diesel was sent on 4th of Sept from India to Myanmar by land
route.
• Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has entered into four more Advance Pricing
Agreements (APAs)related to sectors like telecom, banking, manufacturing and education announced on 4th of
Sept. 2017.Out of these four agreements, three are unilateral and one is a bilateral.
• On 6th September 2017, the National Highway Authority of India awarded its first international project in
Myanmar to a joint venture of Punj Lloyd-Varaha. This project is for the upgradation of the Yagyi–Kalewa
section in Myanmar to two lanes with Project length – 120 km and Estimated cost – Rs.1,177.02 crore.
• On 7th September 2017, Airtel Business an arm of the Bharti Airtel telecom launched Airtel GST
Advantage to enable small businesses and start-ups file their GST (Goods & Services Tax) returns with ease,

• Assam government has signed a MoU with Google India Pvt. Ltd. to increase digital literacy and takeInternet
connectivity to the remotest part of the north-eastern state. Under this MoU the government would work
to provide Internet connections to 26,000 villages and 1,500 tea garden areas in Assam.
• The Women & Child Welfare Department of the Gujarat Government, Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation and
three leading dairies have signed tripartite MOU to save the children of anginawadi from malnutrition. The
MoU was signed in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar.
COMMITTEES
• On 8th September 2017, a Joint Parliamentary Committee has been formed to examine and present a report on
the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill, 2017, in New Delhi. This is a joint committee of both the
houses of the parliament and Mr.Bhupender Yadav, MP as its chairman.
SCHEMES
• Karnataka government will merge the existing seven health schemes to launch a unified health scheme-
‘Arogya Bhagya’. It will cover all 1.4 crore households of the state. The main theme of the ‘Arogya Bhagya’
scheme is ”Treatment Firstand Payment Next”.
On 4th September 2017, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind, President of India laid the foundation for Link-4 pipeline
canal of SAUNI Scheme at Jasdan in Rajkot district of Gujarat. Saurashtra Narmada Avataran
Irrigation (SAUNI) Scheme was conceived by Mr. Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

• Tamil Nadu Police has launched of new online services. Under the online services petitioners seeking
documents to file accident claims can now download all necessary documents via the Internet on payment of a
minimum charge.The online services has launched in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.A copy of the LDR
would be sent to the applicant’s registered email.
• On September 1,2017 Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar launched an online portal for redressal of public
grievances — aimed at addressing complaints within 30 days. The portal www.goaonline.gov.in can be
accessed after providing basic information like name, address, mobile number, Aadhaar number, date of birth,
email id, etc.
• The Food and Drug Administration has approved its first gene therapy drug in the United States that will treat
childhood leukemia.Novartis drug Kymriah works by genetically modifying pediatric and young adult
patients’ blood cells to attack cancer cells in blood and bone marrow.
• The government has issued an alert on spread of new malware ‘Locky Ransomware’ that can lock
computers and demand ransom for unlocking them. Ransomware is a malicious software and the Locky
Ransomware is learnt to be demanding ransom of half bitcoin, which at present rate is equivalent to over Rs
1.5 lakh.
• Intel has introduced a new vision processing unit (VPU) called Movidius Myriad X. The new Intel
VPU is aimed at providing end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to a wide range of product
categories such as smart cameras, virtual reality (VR) devices, robotics and even drones.Myriad X is
the world’s first system-on-chip (SOC) shipping with a dedicated neural compute engine for accelerating deep
learning inferences at the edge.
• Astronomers had discovered seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a relatively nearby dwarf star. The system is
called TRAPPIST-1. It is especially appealing because it has three planets in the habitable zone it means that
these worlds could potentially support liquid water and perhaps even life announced on 1st sept 2017.
• Breakthrough Listen project detected 15 Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) coming from a dwarf galaxy about 3
million light years away from earth.
• WhatsApp is launching a new app to help businesses communicate with their customers announced on 6thsept
2017. WhatsApp Business gives users a verified green checkmark badge next to their names.
• According to the Commerce Ministry, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development
Authority(APEDA) has developed a mobile app “Hortinet” for farmers to facilitate registration, testing and
certification of certain fruits and vegetables.
• Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has launched national teacher’s portal diksha.gov.in on 5th of Sept.
2017. DIKSHA Portal is created to provide digital and advance technology to the teachers.
• Astronomers have discovered a pulsar spinning at more than 42,000 revolutions per minute. It is thesecond-
fastest Spinning Pulsar identified so far. The new object, named PSR J0952-0607 – or J0952 for short –
is classified as a millisecond pulsar and is located between 3,200 and 5,700 light-years away in the
constellation Sextans.
• On 8th September 2017, the Government set up an online service named Contact @DGFT facility to help
importers and exporters resolve all foreign trade-related issues, in New Delhi.
• Scientists have developed an artificial leaf that absorbs sunlight to generate hydrogen fuel from water. It is
an advance technology that may provide clean energy for powering eco-friendly cars in the future.
DEFENCE
• On 5th September 2017, India handed over an off-shore patrol vessel, Varuna, to Sri Lanka as a part of
stepping up co-operation between the two coast guards. The ship (Varuna) was decommissionedwith
traditional honours on August 23 to facilitate the handing over at Kochi.
• On 7th September 2017, the seventh edition of India-Sri Lanka joint maritime naval exercise SLINEX 2017
started near Vishakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh in India on the Bay of Bengal. It will last till 14th
September 2017.SLINEX – Sri Lanka India Naval Exercise are a series of naval exercises between the Indian
Navy and the Sri Lankan Navy.
• Nepal India Joint Military Exercise Surya Kiran has launched and it is to be held from September 3 to 16. This
is the 12th edition of the exercise.Joint military exercise, Surya Kiran Nepal Army Battle School at Saljhandi.
• Ashok Leyland Defence Systems (ALDS), Russia’s Rosoboronexport and ELCOM Group have signed a
cooperation agreement in defence business announced on 6th of Sept. 2017.The MoU has signed on the
sidelines of the International Military Technical Forum Army, held at Kubinka, near Moscow.
• Swedish defence giant Saab and Indian conglomerate Adani group has announced a collaboration in defence

• MS Dhoni reached a record of 100 stumpings in One-Day Internationals during his 301st match, as India
played Sri Lanka in the fifth ODI of the five-match series at Colombo.Dhoni surpassed former Sri Lankan
wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara, who had 99 stumpings in 404 matches.
• Nagpur-based Divya Deshmukh clinched the gold medal in the the girls’ U-12 category at the World Cadets
Chess Championship at Pocos de Caldas, Brazil.She scored a total of 9.5 points to give India its only medal in
the championship this year.
• Amritpal Singh becomes first Indian to sign up for Australia’s National Basketball LeagueDraft Combine in
Melbourne, Australia.
• India’s Konsam Ormila Devi bagged a gold medal in 44kg weight category on the opening day of
theCommonwealth Youth (boys & girls) weightlifting championships.Commonwealth Youth weightlifting
Championship was held at Gold Coast, Australia.
• The official song for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup football tournament was launched by the Local
Organising Committee (LOC) and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) on 4th of Sept 2017. The official song
called “Kar Ke Dikhla De Goal”and the song has been written by lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya and
composed by Pritam.
• Star India bagged the IPL media rights for TV and digital broadcast for a consolidated sum of Rs.16, 347.5
crore ($ 2.55 billion) for a period of five years.It will start from the 11th edition of IPL 2018 for five years. It
pipped Sony to acquire the rights from 2018 to 2022.
• Lewis Hamilton has won the Italian Grand Prix 2017 to take lead in Formula-1 title race announced on
3rd sept. 2017.
