Abstraction

The project draws inspiration from something very significant in light of the nature of my course, something that is huge and humble, something that we stumble across every day and barely notice, A city.
Evidently, my interest lay in designing an educational institution, something which distributed knowledge and served a purpose of residence as well.

I had since long been fascinated by master plans of cities. It was when I had gone through half a dozen of them that I realized that I could blend the two seemingly non-relatable entities together, a city and an
educational institution and create something unique of its kind. I wanted to design my institution such that it was in itself a city. I wanted it to have most, if not all, the traits of a city, naming; streets, crossroads and
alleyways. Studying so many plans I could easily point out that a city is divided into sectors, a sector further divided into ‘Mohollas’ which congregate to a ‘Chowk’ via streets.

The streets form the arteries across mohallas and share interaction when they (streets) meet together (Chowk). The Intersection results in creating numerous activities and hence forms a place of action.

Undergoing through the idea of mohalla, chowk, gully I derived my concept from the intersecting streets and formation of chowk.

The streets become the corridors, as they are connecting various educational pockets and results in calling them (street) as KNOWLEDGE STREET. Because of the contouring nature of site, the constraints allowed
me to play in both directions, the width and height, results in creation of various plays in levels. These streets are allowed to intersect at a point which is named as INTERACTION CHOWK.

I believe that learning isn’t necessarily confined to classrooms or the programmed curriculum. It is has been observed that as much, if not more learning occurs in impromptu encounters with peers and faculty. The
proposed Academic Block recognizes this, giving ample opportunities to meet others by chance while moving through the campus and provides for room to se le down for a discussion.

In the main focus point of the Academic Block is the central plaza. All academic and administration buildings are clustered around them. And it is more than a mere visual connection. All class rooms, faculty rooms
and administrative spaces will benefit climatically, allowing the breeze, which has been cooled by the water. Two buildings of the Academic Block are separated (connected) through Knowledge Street / Interaction
Chowk, providing comfortable connections across the valley to the various parts of the campus. Being main nodal points for the movement through the campus, they are anticipated to be active hubs of the campus.
The main interaction activities and the library are located over here. My design has many ‘Interaction Chowks’ which contribute to the location of the grand knowledge street which joins the rest of the campus to
the free standing structure that emanates knowledge throughout, the Library.
