COE
5E Lesson Plan

Teacher: Erica McKinney

Date: August 27, 2018
Subject area/course/grade level: Math/6th Period/7th Grade
Materials: iPads, Wi-Fi Internet connection, ELMO, Scholastic Math article, chunked Scholastic Math article, YouTube video
links, Math goodies link, integer football worksheet, Smore link, graphic organizer
Standards:
Alabama Course of Study Standard: 4 Common Core Standard: 7-NS1, 7-NS1a, 7-NS1b, 7.NS1c, 7.NS1d
4. ) Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers;
represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram. [7-NS1]
4a. Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0. [7-NS1a]
4b. Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative direction
depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of
0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts. [7-
NS1b]
4c. Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, p - q = p + (-q). Show that
the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference
and apply this principle in real-world contexts. [7-NS1c]
4d. Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers. [7-NS1d]
(Alabama Learning Exchange, 2018)

ISTE Standard: 6 and 7b

Creative Communicator 6.) Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of
purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.
6a. Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their
creation or communication.
6b. Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new
creations.
6c. Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital
objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.
6d. Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended
audiences.
Global Collaborator 7.) Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by
collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.
7b. Students use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers, experts or community
members, to examine issues and problems from multiple viewpoints.
(ISTE, 2018)
Objectives:
 Students will discover integer rules for addition and subtraction through watching a video and reading an article on
football yardage.
 Students will determine integer opposites and absolute value through number lines and field yardage.
 Students will add and subtract integer with same signs and different signs.

Approved January, 2013

Differentiation Strategies:
 The engagement activity will begin with a review of basic integer knowledge from last year with the
bellringer. Student groups may be allowed to work together as needed. This will be assessed through
KAHOOT questions. (Review of 6th grade standards NS.5 through NS.7).
 A YouTube integer video will be shown for students who are visual and auditory learners. Next, students will
have a choice between reading an article from Scholastic Math on adding and subtracting positive and
negative integers or reading a chunked version of the article. Students will work in pairs to play an integer
football game with addition and subtraction from Math Goodies discussing yardage gained and yardage lost
(https://www.mathgoodies.com/games/integer_game, 2018). The assessment will be a worksheet using the
football field as a reference for visual learners.
 Students will try and create their own rules for adding and subtracting integers using the knowledge they have
learned. Notes for this section will be either traditional notes style or using a graphic organizer, depending on
student preference. These notes will be shared through use of the ELMO.
 The elaboration activity will include a group project of creating an online integer newsletter using Smore and
an individual project detailing how integers are used in everyday life.

ENGAGEMENT:
Bellringer: Review of 6th grade basic integer skills (NS5-NS7).
Students will watch a Youtube video on integer and number line basics using this link https://youtu.be/x0E4vxLydNY (PBS
Math Club, 2013).

Assessment
Using KAHOOT, students will answer questions as tables and compete against each other using their mobile devices. One child
per table has their device and inputs the answer after the table agrees to an answer. The questions I created are at the URL
https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/242c4472-b455-4fa4-b002-76a9adf51f74 (KAHOOT, 2018).

EXPLORATION:
Needed Resources:
1. Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=8xV8JypWoJk (GoPSUtv, 2013)
2. Scholastic Math article: Top Mathlete: NFL player John Urschel is also a mathematician! OR the chunked version of
the article (Barba, 2016)
3. iPads
4. Math Goodies Integer Football Game: https://www.mathgoodies.com/games/integer_game
5. Integer Football worksheet
The following is the anticipated order of activities within the exploration section.
1st: Students will watch the video and take notes to explain their take-aways from the video. Students will briefly discuss their
take-aways from the video in their groups.
nd
2 : Each student will read the Scholastic Math article or a chunked version of the article depending on their
learning style.
rd
3 : Each pair of students will play an integer football game from Math Goodies to review adding and subtracting integers. The
URL for the game is https://www.mathgoodies.com/games/integer_game.

Assessment
To assess individual student knowledge, students will complete a integer football worksheet on adding and subtracting
integers using the football field diagram.

Approved January, 2013

EXPLANATION:
Needed Resources:
1. Notebook or Graphic Organizer from Math Giraffe
2. ELMO
Students will discuss at their tables possible connections when adding and subtracting integers on the football field. The
teacher will distribute graphic organizers and ask students to complete, either on the sheet or on notebook paper, the
connections they determined as a group. These connections will be shared as a class using the ELMO. The teacher will
complete a graphic organizer at the end of the discussion to ensure every student has access to the correct information.

ELABORATION:
This is your chance to plan activities for the students to apply what they learned in the lesson to their lives and new situations.
You will need to be creative and allow your students to do the same.
Needed Resources:
1. iPads
2. Student school email addresses to sign-up for Smore (https://www.smore.com/)

Group Project: Smore newsletter introducing integers. The students must include graphics and definitions. Depending on Wi-
Fi strength, YouTube videos will be embedded.

Individual Project: Students will explain how integers are utilized in daily life. The iPads may be used for research.

EVALUATION:
Needed Resources: iPads

Students will complete an assessment from Mastery Connect online to determine their understanding of adding and
subtracting integers. A unit test will be given after multiplying and dividing integers is taught.
