Teacher Notes
Verb “to be”, question forms,
Target Language:
colors/food vocabulary.
Duration: 60 minutes

1 Structure and Timing (all times approximate)

A. Warmer (15 minutes)

B. Reading (15 minutes)
C. Vocabulary (10 minutes)
D. Exercise (10 minutes)
E. Game (10 minutes)

Total: 60 minutes.

2 Procedure

A. Warmer

The focus of the lesson today is affirmative and interrogative forms of the verb “to be”
alongside some vocabulary work on food/room/colors. We will also introduce semantic
grids to your class!

The initial letter-unscrambling task can be done as a class. You can write the correct
room names on the board. For the furniture activity, you can practice some questions
and answers with your students:

Teacher: What is it?

Student A: It’s a fridge.
Teacher: What color is it?
Student B: It’s green.
Teacher: Where is the fridge? Is it in the study?
Student C: No, it isn’t. It’s in the kitchen.

And so on.

B. Reading

The game presented in this reading is the same game that the students themselves
will be playing later in the lesson, so it’s important they understand the rules. After
students have read through the text, you can get students practicing the script in
groups of four. You can monitor this and take notes for correction of pronunciation
later. You also may feel it’s necessary to focus some attention on the structure of the
questions using “to be” although there isn’t really a strong grammar focus in today’s
lesson.

Once the reading phase of the lesson is complete, the vocabulary boxes can be filled
out. You can easily get some more speaking practice here by asking further questions
as you go through each box.

What else is orange?

Name an orange vegetable.

Is Chicago in Spain?
Is Susie Spanish?
Name another American city.

You should exploit any opportunity you have to give your students further speaking
and listening practice, even if it’s just thirty seconds.

Answer Key

Colors: yellow, orange, black, red, grey, white, green

Person/City:
Charlie – Dublin
Mika – Zagreb
Susie – Chicago

C. Vocabulary

There is no getting around the fact that English has an enormous vocabulary, one that
creates ever more problems for even advanced learners. Semantic grids are useful
tools to introduce to students and to enable them to see differences in words. At this
level, the differences are not so subtle, but a grid like this can be a very useful visual
aid.

Is a tiger long or round? Well, that can be open for discussion and debate about
whether we are talking about a fat tiger or not is a good thing.

Once students are clear about what is needed to complete the grid, they can do so in
pairs or small groups and then you can lead the correction and discussion afterwards.

D. Exercise

This is a brief exercise focusing on positive and negative forms of “to be”.

Answer Key

1. A banana isn’t blue, it’s yellow.

2. Are peas yellow? No, they are green.
3. Is bread green? No, it is white or sometimes it is brown.
4. What color are peaches?
5. Some apples are green and some are red and some are yellow.
6. Milk isn’t green, it is white!

E. Game

This is a reconstruction of the game in the Reading section of the lesson. You can
create as much of a “quiz show” atmosphere as you think the students will enjoy,
possibly with a stopwatch and getting them to stand at the front. If you want to crank
up the atmosphere, get the classroom in darkness and bring in a lamp!

Have a list of objects/foods/animals at the ready and do insist on correct English and
no mother tongue being used.
