7. PRESERVATION PHILOSOPHY

7.1. GENERAL

Preservation philosophy should be developed and implemented considering conditions

causing incipient failure as hereafter detailed.

7.1.1. Influence of climate and cyclic operations

Climatic conditions can be the cause of incipient failure of equipment standing idle: it is
important that these conditions and the effect they can have on various types of
equipment are analysed before determining which preservation procedures and methods
of protection should be applied.

7.1.2. Rain, moisture and high humidity

The rate of corrosion may increase greatly in areas where the atmosphere has a high
humidity and contains corrosive contaminants. In coastal areas, salt deposited by sea
spray or rain can have similar adverse effects. High concentrations of these contaminants
can collect in crevices and under insulation if the external sheeting is not water-tight.
Severe corrosion can be expected, particularly in plants where the maximum operating
temperature of the plant did not permit the application of an effective paint coating. This
situation will be aggravated where such plant is in intermittent operation. In such cases
additional inspection will be required to determine the degradation rate particularly if the
equipment or piping is insulated.
If "cold" insulation (i.e. insulation for cryogenic systems which operate below 0 °C)
absorbs moisture during the period standing idle, it can be damaged upon commissioning
when the plant is cooled down.
Similar problems may arise with valves in cryogenic service. Should moisture become
trapped in the crevices between the spindle and valve body during the idle period, then
the water will freeze when the plant is subsequently cooled down, and the valve may
become inoperable.

7.1.3. Idle rotating equipment

Slender horizontal rotor shafts when not rotating could be subjected to a plastic
it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

deformation. Such a deformation, even if only very small, will cause damage during
subsequent start-up.
Bearings could be damaged by high pressure contact over a long period between two
locally contacting surfaces.

7.2. PRESERVATION PERIODS AND PHASES

The extent of preservation is primarily a function of the time for which a plant is to be
standing idle, consequently preservation periods can be defined as:

ƒ Temporary preservation when the period of idleness may be about 2 months (1 year
for civil engineering items, storage tanks, stacks, structural steelwork);
ƒ Short-term preservation when the period of idleness may about 1 year (2 years for
civil engineering items, storage tanks, stacks, structural steelwork);
ƒ Long-term preservation (not included in this procedure: if required refer to Mfr
manual) when the period of idleness is more than 1 year (more than 2 years for civil
engineering items, storage tanks, stacks, structural steelwork).

It is recognized that in some cases there will be justification for adopting a preservation
procedure lying between the terms defined above.

For each single preservation period (temporary, short-term and long-term preservation),
three time phases can be defined:

ƒ Initial preservation, when plant systems are physically prepared and treated for a
temporary, short or long period of non-use;
ƒ Maintenance during Preservation, when plant systems are periodically inspected and
treated to ensure that deterioration of system parts is nil or is restricted to within
acceptable limits;
ƒ Restoration, when plant systems are returned to their original condition (i.e. prior
preservation) and in conformity with plant Precommissioning/commissioning
requirements. The removal of petroleum-based protective product by means of
hydrocarbon solvents with low flash point has to be handled carefully to prevent fires.
VPI powders are flammable: their removal either by air blasting or water washing is
necessary as a safety precaution before starting up fired equipment.

It is always advisable to recall the Supplier/Manufacturers' representatives to assist with

the reassembly and test running of major rotating items.

8. RUST PREVENTIVES

Residues of perspiration, soldering fluxes, grinding compounds, atmospheric dust

particles, etc., can greatly reduce the effectiveness of rust preventive.
In order that rust preventive may function with maximum effectiveness, it is essential that
the surface be thoroughly cleaned prior to its application: surfaces shall be cleaned with
mineral spirit, aliphatic petroleum naphtha or any other standard solvent, prior to
application of any rust preventive product. Kerosene shall not be used as cleaning agents.
Where the surfaces are rusting, it has to be necessary to remove the rust by mechanical
or hand brush, clean the surfaces with solvent and coat them with anti-rust product.

The severity of exposure to rusting naturally determines the degrees of protection

required. The first factor to be considered is the amount of exposure to air and moisture.
The higher the humidity of the atmosphere, the greater will be the tendency to rust.
It is generally considered that the critical relative humidity for iron is 40 to 60 percent and
that rusting is likely in atmospheres of relative humidity above this range.
Packaging alone will not prevent condensation of atmospheric moisture: it still occurs in
the air space in the wrapped enclosure.
The degree of protection also depends on external circumstances. A given protective
product will give freedom from corrosion for a much longer time in a dry atmosphere
indoors than if stored outside exposed directly to the weather.

8.1. PROTECTIVE PRODUCTS

The use of protective products such as fluids and oils, vapour-phase corrosion inhibitors
and certain grades of greases are recommended, wherever possible, for the preservation
of equipment standing idle.

Protective products belong mainly to the following types:

ƒ Rust-ban lube compatible preservative oils, used for internal parts and surfaces
protected by casing (gears, bearings, shafts, levers, etc.). They have some lubrication
properties; they are compatible with conventional mineral oil lubricants and are usually
applied by brush, by filling or by spray. After initial application, they must be checked
for contamination and renewed, if necessary.
ƒ Rust-ban for exterior surfaces. These will not have lubricating properties and they
should be removed before placing protected part in service. They are usually divided
it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

in:
9 Dry layer for external parts of equipment/materials requiring long-term outdoor
storage: this coating must be inspected periodically and renewed in case of breaks
in the film. Solvent must remove the said layer before assembling the relative
protected parts;
9 Soft layer for external or internal parts of equipment and machines: this layer, for
some applications, does not require removal by solvent before assembling.
ƒ Protective grease wrapped with oiled paper;

ƒ Vapour phase corrosion inhibitors. When they are used in the proper quantities, these
vapour-phase corrosion inhibitors can be applied advantageously for the internal
protection of turbines, compressors, hydraulic systems, bearings, engines, heat
exchangers, pipes, vessels, etc. Under adverse conditions (e.g. high humidity, widely
fluctuating temperatures and corrosive atmospheres) the periods of protection will be
reduced and periodic inspection should be performed: Low temperature will reduce the
vapour production rate. These corrosion inhibitors can be divided into two types:
9 VPIs (Vapour Phase Inhibitors), crystalline powders which slowly vaporise into the
enclosed space inside a package;
9 VSI (Vapour Space Inhibited) concentrate, an oily concentrate that can be added
to lubrication/sealing oil system when equipment is not going to be completed filled.
The protection is obtained by the evaporation of the medium, the vapour being
absorbed as an invisible film on the protected surfaces.
ƒ Desiccants are drying agents, such as silica gel, to be used inside closed equipment.
The desiccant should be placed in a suitable container and periodically renewed. It
shall not be used in combination with VPI

Certain products used in formulating rust preventatives have a low to moderate level of
oral toxicity. Applicators should follow the regulations recommended for the safe handling
and use of these products.

8.2. METHODS OF PROTECTION

Typical methods of protection can be divided in the following two groups:

ƒ Exterior protection, including:

9 Cocooning, envelopment of equipment in a single plastic coating. The coating is
applied by spraying either directly onto the equipment body or onto a special
wrapping of paper or wire netting. Before cocooning, the equipment shall be
carefully cleaned of grease and dust, and then dried. Cocooning should conform to
the equipment Supplier/Manufacturer's recommendations. Where possible, the
envelope should be pressurized by inert gas (small overpressure);
9 Coating to be applied on the bright-finished moving parts of mechanical equipment
but only after cleaning and drying of the surfaces;
9 Wrapping with waterproof paper or VPI paper. It is a cheap method of protection.
However, the equipment protected in this way should be stored under cover.

ƒ Interior protection, including:

it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

9 Oil coating of the interior of the stationary equipment may be carried out by
spraying to form a protective film on the surface or, if the foundation is strong
enough, by filling and subsequent draining;
9 Filling. Often one of the factors limiting the filling of process and storage equipment
is the strength of the foundation. Adequate measures shall be taken to allow for
expansion of the filling fluid, which can be a gas oil or inhibited fresh water;

9. PRESERVATION FOR SPECIAL MATERIALS

9.1. Austenitic Stainless Steel

Equipment and piping of austenitic stainless steel shall be thoroughly cleaned and dried
internally because deposits, pockets of water or oil can lead to serious corrosion.
Water containing a concentration of chlorides may precipitate stress corrosion cracking or
pitting. Due to biological components left in systems or introduced with the testing or
flushing water, there is also the possibility of microbiological induced corrosion.
After drying, equipment and piping have to fill with dry inert gas, maintaining a slight
positive internal pressure, to prevent the introduction of oxygen.

9.2. FERRITIC STAINLESS STEEL

Ferritic stainless (chromium) steel equipment should be cleaned and dried and be closed
for preservation. If pitting corrosion is possible, austenitic stainless steel procedure has to
be applied.

9.3. ALUMINIUM, NICKEL, NICKEL ALLOY AND NICKEL STEEL

Aluminium equipment shall be kept clean and dry.

Nickel, nickel alloy and nickel steel equipment shall be cleaned and kept dry.
If pitting corrosion is possible, austenitic stainless steel procedure has to be applied to
nickel, nickel alloy and nickel steels.

9.4. BRICK-LINED/REFRACTORY-LINED EQUIPMENT

11.5. FURNACE

11.5.1. Storage

All steel structures, shell plates and cast materials, may be stored in open area subject to
the weather, for a reasonable length of time. It is recommended, however, that small item
(stainless) castings, nuts, bolts, etc. be placed in a closed warehouse.

In area where climatic conditions are not too severe, all other materials may be stored
outdoors, including brick and refractory, provided that precautions are taken to keep
excessive moisture from the insulation, firebrick, mortar and other castables.
It is preferable, if freezing weather or excessive rain conditions are expected, that the
material mentioned in this paragraph be stored inside closed warehouse. These building
may remain untreated under all normal conditions.
Should the brick or refractory be extremely wet prior to being stored in the warehouse,
enough heat should be available to prevent freezing. This heat will also have a tendency
to dry out firebrick.

11.5.2. Initial Preservation

Temporary Preservation
- Isolate from process connections;
- Purge coils internal with inert gas and maintain under inert gas pressure;
- Close/seal vents and drains.

Short Term Preservation
