WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN-DAY PERIOD VALID 25TH


SEPTEMBER TO 1ST OCTOBER, 2018

Review of weather for the last seven- Forecast for the next seven days (25th
day period (17th to 23rd September September to 1st October2018):
2018): The forecast indicates that:
 Rainfall continued to be recorded over parts of the  Most parts of the country are expected to experience

1. WEATHER REVIEW FOR THE LAST SEVEN DAYS (17TH TO 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2018)
1.1 Rainfall Review
Most parts of the country were dry for most of the period. Rainfall was however reported over some
parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West and central Rift Valley, Central highlands, South Rift
Valley and the Coastal areas as depicted in Figures 1 and 2. Comparison between the previous seven
days (17th to 23rd September, 2018) with the period under review (10th to 16th September, 2018)
indicates an increase in rainfall amounts over the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West and central Rift
Valley, Central highlands and the Coastal area of the country.

During the period under review, Mukakula Farm Station in Bungoma County recorded the highest
seven-day total rainfall of83.8mm. Other stations that recorded significant total rainfall amounts
include Ministry of Water station in Busia( 69.1mm), Moi International Airport Meteorological Station
(37.0mm), Kericho Meteorological Station(36.0mm), Kakamega Meteorological Station (35.7mm) and
Butere rainfall stationin Kakamega County (33.8mm).

 
Mukakula farm rainfall station in Bungoma County recorded the highest amount of rainfall within 24
hours i.e. 35.0mm on 21st September 2018, Ministry of Water rainfall station in Busia recorded
34.3mm on 19th September, 2018 and Kakamega Meteorological station recorded 30.8mm on 17th
September, 2018.

1.2 Temperature Review

Comparing this review period (17th to 23rd September, 2018) to the previous seven days (10th to 16th
September, 2018) it is noted that day-time (maximum) temperatures increased in some stations like
Kakamega and Nyahururu and decreased in others like Voi, Mombasa and Kangema among others.

 
Night-time (minimum) temperatures increased in some stations like Eldoret and Narok and decreased
in others like Wajir, Nyeri and Dagoretti.

Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 37.6°C on 20th
September, 2018 while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum
temperature of 3.4oC on 21st September, 2018.The same stations recorded the highest seven-day
average maximum temperature of 36.3oC and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature
of 5.0°C respectively (see Figure 3 below).

2. FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS FROM 25TH SEPTEMBER TO 1ST OCTOBER 2018.

The forecast for the next seven-day period is as follows:

 Most parts of the country are expected to experience wet conditions.


 Afternoon showers expected over few places within the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands
West of the Rift Valley, the Central and South Rift Valley, the Central Highlands and the
Northeastern.

 The Coastal region is likely to receive heavy rainfall from Wednesday night to Friday morning.
 Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of more than 25 knots are expected over Northwestern
throughout the forecast period and the Eastern half of the country from Wednesday to the end
of the forecast period.

DETAILED REGIONAL FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS 25TH SEPTEMBER TO 1ST OCTOBER 2018.

The Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley (Counties of
Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, UasinGishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet,
Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia) are likely to
experience mainly sunny intervals in the mornings throughout the forecast period. Afternoon/night
showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places throughout the forecast period.

Northwestern (Counties of Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu) is likely to experience sunny intervals
throughout the forecast period.

 
Central Highlands (including Nairobi area) (Counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga,
Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka) are likely to experience sunny intervals with occasional
light rains especially from Thursday. Afternoon showers are expected over few places increasing to
several places on Thursday and Friday

Northeastern (Counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo) is likely to experience mainly
sunny intervals throughout the forecast period. However, occasional showers are expected over few
places on Thursday and Friday

Southeastern Lowlands (Counties of Kajiado, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta) are likely to
experience mainly sunny intervals during the forecast period. However, rains are expected over few
places on Thursday and Friday. Heavy rainfall is expected over Taita Hills and surrounding areas on
Thursday

The Coastal Strip (counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale): is likely to experience
rainfall over several places throughout the forecast period. Heavy rainfall is expected on Wednesday to
Friday.

N.B: This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this
Department.
