Jim Hagedorn: Out of Options? Run for Congress!
Significant Findings
 Hagedorn has lived in the DC area since he was a child, attended college there, and got his first job as a
Congressional staffer with a representative who served in the same delegation as his dad. He spent
decades in cushy government jobs without returning to Minnesota.
 After he lost his first Congressional race in 2010, Hagedorn went right back to D.C. and voted in
Arlington County, Virginia, for the 2012 presidential race.
 Hagedorn cites “Minnesota small business experience” on his website, but he hasn’t reported an income
from the state since 2012, doesn’t own property there, and never voted there prior to his first run for
Congress.
 Hagedorn collected more than $2.8 million in salaries and $16,000 in bonuses during his decades at the
U.S. Treasury
 Perennial loser Hagedorn has repeatedly been accused of chasing other Republican candidates out of his
Congressional races. D.C. Republicans are powering his fourth bid for Congress, despite the fact that
voters in Minnesota have already rejected him three times.
Hagedorn Has Spent Most Of His Life In DC And Northern Virginia, And Only Left Virginia In

Hagedorn Spent The School Year In Virginia After His Father Was Elected To Congress. “In 1974, Jim’s
father was elected to Congress to represent southern Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District. Shortly thereafter the
family began splitting time between Washington, D.C. and Minnesota – spending the school year in the Virginia
suburbs of DC and returning each summer to the Truman farm. While attending Langley, a public high school, Jim

2014: Hagedorn Engaged In Questionable Publicity Tactics Against His Primary Opponent
2014: Hagedorn Did Not Abide By The Endorsement Of His Party. “Nelson said she will seek to win the
party’s endorsement. She stopped short of saying she would abide by the endorsement process at this time, noting
that Hagedorn said he would abide in 2014 but changed his mind after losing the endorsement to Aaron Miller.
Hagedorn won the primary and lost to Walz in the general election.” [Post-Bulletin, 10/2/17]
After Initially Agreeing To Drop Out Of The Race, Hagedorn Went Back On His Word. “Initially, Hagedorn
dropped out of the race and announced his support for Miller’s candidacy. But the Blue Earth businessman later
announced he was getting back into the race, accusing Miller of not campaigning hard enough for the seat --
something Miller said was untrue. Heading into the primary, Miller’s campaign had the fundraising advantage and
the party’s seal of approval.” [Post-Bulletin, 12/26/14]
Doug Baker, Fillmore GOP County Chair, Decried Hagedorn’s Conduct, Calling Him An “Angry Kid.” “In
the most dramatic example of the tension, Fillmore County Republican Chair Doug Baker sent an anti-Hagedorn
email Aug. 18 to activists across the district. He declined requests for comment, stating his email ‘speaks for itself.’
‘Let me get this straight. We want to reward the guy who lied right to our faces, wasted our time and money and
widened the rift in the district by wasting more time and money to give him the very thing he thought lowly enough
to ignore four months ago,’ Baker wrote. Baker compared Hagedorn to an ‘angry kid,’ brought up the blog posts
and criticized Hagedorn for living outside of Minnesota for most of his life. Hagedorn said he disagreed with
Baker’s claims. He declined to comment on whether Baker’s actions were appropriate.” [Mankato Free Press,

Hagedorn’s Relationship With The Minnesota GOP Chair Intimidated Others Out Of The Race
As Of October 2017, Hagedorn Was Dating Minnesota GOP Chair Jennifer Carnahan. “Walz is leaving open
his Southern Minnesota district to run for governor. It backed President Trump by 15 points last year. Hagedorn,
came close to ousting Walz, has had the GOP primary field to himself. He stirred controversy when it was revealed
he’s dating the state GOP chair Jennifer Carnahan.” [National Journal, 10/2/17]

Some Local Republicans Expressed Concern About The Implications Of Hagedorn And Carnahan’s
Relationship On The 2018 Republican Primary. “Republican reaction is mixed over whether it is proper for state
Republican Chairman Jennifer Carnahan and GOP congressional candidate Jim Hagedorn to be dating. Heather
Carlson of the Post-Bulletin of Rochester reports that ‘some potential Republican congressional candidates say they
are hesitant to run for the 1st District seat’ after learning about the news. Others say it does not matter to them.
Hagedorn confirmed the relationship, while the party chairwoman did not, at least not to Carlson. Some party
leaders said she told them about it. ‘Carnahan said the state party does not play a role in endorsements for

(R) and state Republican Party Chair Jennifer Carnahan are in a relationship has made other potential Republican
candidates hesitant to toss their hats in the ring for the open seat race in southern Minnesota. State Rep. Nels
Pierson (R) ‘said after he learned that Minnesota Republican Party Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan and Hagedorn
were dating, it prompted him to delay making a decision about whether to run.’ And Olmsted County Republican

2016: Hagedorn Said That “Washington Groups” Were The Reason That Walz Had Prevailed In The
District. “Hagedorn cited ‘Washington money’ and ‘Washington special groups’ as reasons for Walz’s triumph,
and lamented that he won’t have the opportunity to work with President-elect Donald Trump to enact conservative
legislation. ‘But I am excited for our country, as the Republican Party is positioned to move our nation in a new
direction and we have the opportunity to shape the Supreme Court for a generation or longer,’ Hagedorn said. [The

in November, has told Republicans in southern Minnesota that he will run again in 2018. Hagedorn, of Blue Earth,
also ran in 2014. Walz, DFL-Mankato, was first elected in 2006. This year’s race hadn’t been expected to be close.

Jim Hagedorn Is Wrong For Minnesota
 Hagedorn has openly scorned bipartisanship, saying that “it’s about beating the liberals…it’s about
winning,” and repeating his assertion that it’s impossible to compromise with those he disagrees with
on the issues.
 Hagedorn disrespects the troops – he has repeatedly made fun of John McCain, a decorated war hero,
and allegedly mocked a disabled veteran who disagreed with him politically.
 Hagedorn agreed with Trump and Speaker Ryan on the Republican Tax Scam, even though it would
be bad for Minnesotans.
 Hagedorn spent years of his time as a federal bureaucrat behind a computer screen in D.C. publishing
blog posts under his own name that were offensive and attacked just about everyone, including national
members of his own party.
 Hagedorn supported the Muslim Ban, and has repeatedly made offensive comments about immigrants,
including claiming that they posed a public health risk.

 Hagedorn capitalized on his Beltway connections for his fourth Congressional attempt: his campaign
manager is on leave from his job as GOP Rep. Tom Emmer’s Chief of Staff, and he flew out to D.C. to
meet with party operatives less than a month after he lost in 2016
 When asked whether he would support Paul Ryan for speaker in 2018, Hagedorn equivocated, saying
“We’ll see who runs for speaker.”
 Hagedorn has enjoyed fundraising assistance from former GOP senators and Members of Congress.
 In 2016, Hagedorn said that he wanted to “Take power from the Washington, D.C. politicians.”
 Hagedorn was listed as one of the NRCC’s “Young Guns.”
 Hagedorn has historically attempted to leverage his father’s reputation to advance his own political
career.
 Hagedorn went back on a promise to abide by the Minnesota GOP’s 2014 endorsement, prompting
