Experiment 7: Spectrophotometry, Absorption, and Molar Absorbance

Introduction:

In Lab 7, the molar absorptivity of a complex ion and the composition of a

complex ion was determined using Excel. The inputted data was information that was

gathered using spectrophotometry. Using information from the graph, the absorptivity of

the unknown complex as well as the n value were found.

Experimental:

The first step is to prepare the solution using the assigned ligand. Follow the

directions on how to make each solution as stated in CHEM 111B laboratory manual:

Gardner N., Garber R., and Mezyk S. “General Chemistry II” pp 42. Then, measure the

absorption spectrum of the FeLn2+ for each Fe2+solution. Follow the directions on how to

use the Spectrophotometer as stated in CHEM 111B laboratory manual: Gardner N.,

Garber R., and Mezyk S. “General Chemistry II” pp 44-45. Plot data onto Excel.

In part B, a new stock solution will be supplied. Make the solutions by following

the directions as stated in CHEM 111B laboratory manual: Gardner N., Garber R., and

Mezyk S. “General Chemistry II” pp 43. Refer to CHEM 111B laboratory manual:

Gardner N., Garber R., and Mezyk S. “General Chemistry II” pp 44-45 on how to use the

spectrophotometer. Plot data onto Excel.

Conclusion:

The value of n was found to be 2.92, using moles of ligand divided by moles of
Fe . The compound is FeL32+.
