Assignment S2’2018 – NEB30203 Electrical Machines and Drives

Question 1

a) A 500 hp, 720 rpm synchronous motor connected to a 3980 V, 3-phase line generates an excitation
voltage, Eo of 1790 V (line-to-neutral) when the dc excitation current is 25 A. The synchronous
reactance is 20 Ω and the torque angle between Eo and E is 30˚.

Calculate:
i. The value of Ex. [7 marks]
ii. The ac line current. [3 marks]
iii. The power factor of the motor. [3 marks]
iv. The approximate horsepower developed by the motor. [5 marks]
v. The approximate torque developed at the shaft. [2 marks]
Draw:
vi. The phasor diagram for the synchronous motor. [5 marks]
Question 2

(a) A 3-phase induction motor having synchronous speed, n s of 1200 rpm draws 80 kW from 3-
phase feeder. The copper and core losses in the stator have the value of 5 kW. If the motor
runs at 1152 rpm. Determine the following:

i. The active power transmitted to the rotor. (2 marks)

ii. The rotor copper loss. (4 marks)
iii. The mechanical power developed. (3 marks)
iv. The mechanical power delivered to the load, if the windage and friction losses are 2 kW.
(2 marks)
v. The efficiency of the motor. (5 marks)

(b) A 3-phase, 60 Hz induction motor runs at 890 rpm at no load and at 840 rpm at full load

Determine:
i. The number of the poles and the synchronous speed (3 marks)
ii. The slip at rated load (2 marks)
iii. The speed at one-quarter of the rated load (3 marks)
iv. The rotor’s electrical frequency at one-quarter of the rated load (2 marks)
