o you’ve been told that there’s
a municipal election on Oct.
25. You might have been told
to get out and vote, or maybe even
to “Get Pissed Off!” from the CSA’s
campaign urging students to become
educated about campaign issues and
voting. But where is a politically
active, community-minded student
to go to cast that ballot?
Well, it won’t be on campus.

This election, you’re going to have
to make a bit of a trip to vote, to
a polling station in your ward of
residence. And some people are, in
fact, pissed off.

Commissioner for the CSA, first
found out about the lack of polling
stations on campus this election at
the beginning of the school year.
“When I called to check in, they
said no. They said there would [only]
be [a polling station] for Ward 5
because they felt that would be
adequate for students, and that was
really disappointing,” said Zavarella.

and the administration, the city
stayed firm in its decision to refrain

hat do you think of
when you hear the
word “feminism”?
Do you snarl when you find out
that another self-proclaimed
group of feminists marched the
streets in solidarity for justice and
empowerment? If you generally
feel uneasy about the idea of defiant
women grouping together, shaking
their fists high and shouting
loudly in opposition to patriarchal
oppression, then you likely did not
attend Take Back the Night – an
annual event that sees dozens upon
dozens of women march through
the streets of Guelph to condemn
sexual violence and reclaim their
right to feel safe at night, the time
of the day that assaults against
women and children most often
take place.
When I first explained the
concept to my male and female
companions, it appeared that
from putting a polling station on
campus. Zavarella felt frustrated by
this decision.
“I tried to convince the city clerk,
and the administration tried as well,
but they completely stonewalled us,”
said Zavarella.
It may come as a surprise that
students won’t be able to do their
voting on campus, but there was a
time not so long ago that students
were not able to vote in both their
hometowns and university towns.
When a reform to the Elections
Act permitted students to have
both votes count, the city placed a
polling station on campus. However,
according to a representative from
the City of Guelph Clerk’s Office,

individuals from both genders
became awash with a similar kind of
confusion. Question marks floated
around their minds as they sensed
a flawed disconnect between why
the women were marching and the
actual conditions that characterize
our modern day society. Why
should women be marching around
and yelling about empowerment?
Haven’t we more or less achieved
equality? What, in this day and age,
is the point of all this commotion?
Their questions seemed to be more
common than I had anticipated, so
I attended the event carrying with
me a determination to offer some
kind of sound response to such
inquiries upon experiencing Take
Back the Night myself.
To fully understand the depth
to this event, it’s important to
first of all, come to know the
significance of Marianne’s Park
– the place where both women
and men initially gather to begin
the night’s activities. Located
along Gordon Street just by the
Speed River, Marianne’s Park
was established for Marianne
Goulden, who became the first
woman, along with her children,
to occupy the Guelph Women in
statistics showed that in both 2003
and 2006, over 90 per cent of the
on-campus students who had their
names added to the voters list did
not vote at this poll. The Clerk’s
Office cites statistics as low as six
per cent and seven per cent in 2003
and 2006 respectively, compared to
37 per cent and 40 per cent citywide
voter turnout.
As low as these stats sound,
the CSA has made it known that
seven per cent of students still
equated to over 1200 students.

from her husband in 1979. Soon
after she took residence at the
shelter, she became a volunteer
and then a paid staff member.
“Marianne’s Place” became the
informal name of the shelter for
those women who did not want
to have to disclose to others that
they were staying at a shelter.
Sadly, after becoming a cherished
and well-known member of the
shelter, Marianne was murdered in
1992 at the age of 47 by a man she
was dating at the time. Marianne’s
Park is now a garden in memory
of Goulden’s life. It is fitting then,

Understanding how the
CSA bi-election works
and why you should
vote

W
hen you walk through
the University Center
this week, it may appear
that everything is as it should be.
The food court is bustling, student
clubs are advocating on behalf of
their cause, and the occasional
vendor appears to be selling
jewelry, graduation rings, or in the
anticipation of the cold weather
arriving, mitts, scarves and hats.
But then you come across the
booth set up to encourage students
to vote, this time for the Central
Student Association (CSA) Bi-
Election.
You may start to feel
overburdened with election talk.
The CSA Executive elections
ended just last April, and now
there’s this buzz going around
campus to vote for the upcoming
municipal election for the City.
Never fear, Jackie Doyle, Policy
and Transition Manager and Chief
Electoral Officer for the CSA,
coordinates the CSA Bi-Election
and explained the significance of
the election and how exactly it
impacts students.
The election takes place every
year in the fall semester, in the
interim of regular elections, which
happen every winter. The CSA
Bi-Election elects board members
to the CSA Board of Directors,
which operates as the political body
that represents all undergraduate
students. The successful candidates
will represent their college. Every

students won’t find the time to
vote in their busy schedules.
“It makes things so much easier
if you can just go to your classes
and vote in between them– it’s a
one-stop shop,” she said.
Clearly, the CSA and the city
aren’t seeing eye to eye over this
issue. But how are other members
of our university community
feeling about the polling
controversy?
“It’s always good to support
people having an opportunity
to vote, so anything that makes
voting easier is good,” said Jan
Hall, host of CFRU’s Royal City
Rag. “The big dilemma is that the
rules always end up being the rules
and we often don’t find out until
it’s too late to make a difference.”
So, should a lack of on-campus
polling stations get in the way of
our right to vote? Though it might
student is a part of a college, which
is responsible for representing
their needs in terms of their
academic program and experience
in that discipline. There are two
seats for every college, and there
are seven colleges in total. In this
election, only four colleges will be
represented, as some colleges didn’t
see any candidates come forward
to campaign.
The unique aspect of this election,
is that not everyone will be casting
a ballot. This isn’t to say that only
some people will be chosen to vote,
but rather, only undergraduates
who fall under the colleges that
have candidates running will be
sent a ballot to their U of G e-mail
account. Students who are a part
of the College of Arts, the Ontario
Agricultural College and the
Ontario Veterinarian College will
not find an e-mail asking them to
vote because there is no one to vote
for on behalf of their college.
Students only vote for the
representatives within their own
college. This is to ensure that
students only vote for the college
that is relevant to them. In doing so,
it prevents students from voting on
behalf of a college that represents
departments that they are not
associated with at all. It doesn’t
make sense for an arts student to
have jurisdiction over who should
win in the college representing
engineering and computer science
students, for example.
Once elected, the new CSA
board members will begin to
represent the student body by
the end of October, when their
positions are ratified and their
terms officially start.
So now that you have a better

city’s polling system, Hall stressed

voting, no matter where you mark

Additionally, according to the
representative from the Clerk’s
Office, there will be several
election teams at the polling
station for Ward 5, where many
university students reside, one of
which will be dedicated to adding
students to the voters list so that
they can vote.
Despite the lack of agreement
between the city and the university
on the polling station issue,
Zavarella is hopeful that the city
will reinstate on-campus polling
stations in the future.
“I hope that all of the pressure
from us and the pushback from
the administration will help, at
least for the next election,” stated
Zavarella.

to meetings every two weeks.

board and the board members that
you vote to elect are named to sit
on these committee,” said Doyle.

those are the people who really
need to vote more, so they can
get their representatives on the
board to change it in a positive

Anti-prostitution laws
struck down
Key provisions of Canada’s anti-
prostitution laws have been
thrown out by an Ontario court.
Justice Susan Himel ruled that
the Criminal Code provisions
relating to prostitution negate
the health of sex-trade workers
and contribute to higher levels
of danger. The effect of the
decision could see brothels being
legally operated in Canada, as
prostitutes would be protected
indoors under the law. It’s also
possible that sex workers could
gain other workers rights and set
up associations, health standards,
pay income tax and have
workers’ compensation programs.
Justice Himel suspended the
effect of the decision for 30
days, noting that immediate
consequences of her ruling may
not be in the public’s interest.

Governor General
Michaëlle Jean
finishes term
Governor General Michaëlle Jean
wrapped up her five years serving
Canada and will now go on to work
with the United Nations. Jean,
who was originally born in Haiti,
worked as a journalist, filmmaker
and women’s rights advocate before
she became Governor General.
Jean will be remembered for her
compassionate nature. During her
time as Governor General, Jean
visited a prison to talk with young
inmates, traveled to Canada’s
arctic Aboriginal communities,
and went to Haiti upon the
earthquake. Her legacy will also
include her decision to allow
Prime Minister Stephen Harper
to prorogue Parliament in 2008.

Hungary left to deal
with toxic spill
Four people died, 120 were injured
and six more are missing after a
spill from an alumina plant burst
from a reservoir and has flooded
at least seven villages. About
600,000-700,000 cubic meters of
toxic sludge was released from the
town of Ajka, where the plant is
located. Hungarian environment
minister Zoltan Illes has said that
a layer of soil 2 cm deep will have
to be removed from the entire
region that has been contaminated.
It is expected that the clean up will
take at least a year and will require
financial and technical assistance
from the European Union.

“TBTN,” continued

After men and women gathered
at Marianne’s Park and spoke
about why they were participating
in the event, women solely took
to the streets with candles lit and
signs in hand, and chanted to
demand the right to be safe and
free of violence. The Royal City
Roller Girls, the women’s roller
derby team in Guelph, led scores
of women to the St. George
Square downtown. Once women
came to the end of the march, they
were met by a group of rallying
men and women. The rest of
the evening consisted of women
sharing personal stories, speeches
and dramatic monologues about
the ongoing violence projected at
women, children and trans people.
I caught up with the Assistant
Executive Director of Guelph-
Wellington Women in Crisis and
Manager of the Sexual Assault
Center Program, Heather Field, to
talk about sexual violence in Guelph.
She explained what Take Back the
Night really means to her.

sexual violence against women and
children have a focus and a focus
around the need to be able to be
safe in all aspects of life, whether
that’s walking down the street or
whether that’s in our homes or in
our workplaces, wherever we go in
our lives, that we deserve to be safe
from sexual violence, from sexual
harassment, and any other violence
and abuse,” said Field.
Field emphasized that the ongoing
struggle to attain equality for women
is still just that - a struggle.
“In the year 2010 what we know
about is that the predominant
violence against persons happens
to women and children, and the
dominant aggressor towards women
and children are men,” said Field.
“So there still is a need for there to
be a focus on the safety on women
and children…Ideally if we had
achieved all of the equality and lived
in a violent-free society, there would
be no need for Guelph-Wellington
Women in Crisis. We wouldn’t have
1200 clients a year coming to us plus
8000 crisis phone calls, on top of
that. And that’s just for Guelph and
Wellington County.”
It appears that violence against
women is more prominent in
not an immigrant, your parent,
your grandparents, or your great-
grandparents may have traveled
from somewhere outside of the
country to settle into our northern
land, likely in search of a better life.
But despite the political rhetoric
that portrays Canada to be an
inclusive, multicultural nation
welcoming to individuals from all
walks of life, there continue to be
many issues that immigrants face
once they cross our border.
From Sept. 30 to Oct. 1,
the U of G hosted the fourth
annual On News Shores
conference entitled ‘Resilience of
Immigrants: Coping with Stress
in Various Cultural Contexts.’
This conference enabled scholars,
activists and community members
from Canada and all over the
world to come together to discuss
the challenges that immigrants
experience, how immigrants
overcome such challenges, and
how to develop effective networks
that can provide adequate support
throughout their transition.
David Este, professor of
Social Work at the University
of Calgary, researches issues
related to settlement adaptation
of immigrants to Canada, from
young children to seniors. Este
explained what he perceived to
be the largest barrier facing adult
immigrants in Canada.
“Immigrants who come to
Canada as adults who have
university degrees, or have years

to realize. Field mentioned that
the issue is not separate from the
university either, as many students
use their services too.
“Actually the university age group
is one of the age groups that is most
at risk of being sexually assaulted –
the age of 16 to 28 – so you know,
the university population is one
that should be paying attention
to the dangers of women’s lives.
There certainly are women calling
the Sexual Assault Center who
are connected to the University of
Guelph,” explained Field.
Field explained how it is integral
that men also participate in the
process of advancing women’s rights.
“Men can play a very important
role in knowing that information,
believing that information and
supporting with their peers and
with others the need for women
and children to be respected as equal
persons to themselves…. And in not
acknowledging the violence against
women and children, they contribute
to the change not happening,” said
Field.
Matthew Stevenson, graduate
student in Couple and Family
Therapy, explained why when
of work experience in their
occupational field…come to
Canada with the expectations
that they’ll be able to find work
that is related to their educational
achievements based on their
experience [and instead], end up
what we call underemployed,” said
Este. “They end up being forced,
from a survival perspective to take
on what they describe, and these
aren’t my words, either survival
jobs or menial jobs.”
Nashila Dharshi, Manager of the
Immigrant Student Mentorship
Program at the Calgary Bridge
Foundation for Youth, traveled to
Guelph to further discuss issues
that immigrant youth often deal
with upon their arrival in Canada.
Dharshi mentioned that some
of the major difficulties that youth
incur come from having to sort
through a shifting identity.
“The battle of the duel identity.
What does it mean to be Canadian
when you weren’t born in Canada?
It is difficult finding a balance,
and feeling like their not negating
something from their native
culture and from the culture that
their adapting to, so it’s difficult
keeping a piece of themselves from
back home and bringing a new
piece to the puzzle [in Canada],”
said Dharshi.
It doesn’t help immigrants to
overcome these challenges when
negative attitudes are projected
towards them. Este believes that
protectionist ideologies tend
first learning about Take Back the
Night, men may feel uneasy about
participating.
“There’s a nervousness about how
best to participate because since
the event is about empowering the
voice of women, there isn’t an active
role that men can play in being in
the march,” said Stevenson. “So by
being present and showing your
support, that’s really meaningful but
it can feel like you’re being excluded
on some levels. I think on the other
hand, there’s a self blame, rather it
being about empowering women, it
feels like it’s blaming men.”
But Stevenson encouraged men to
think deeper about the event and see
the significance of women’s justice
issues without assuming that they
are aimed at belittling men.
“I think that the really important
thing is to focus on methods of
empowerment and that really the
direction that events like this is
going is that it’s not trying to put
anyone down, it’s trying to improve
society and that it’s not trying to
make men feel less, but to empower
women more.”
If men are able to see the event
as a way to collectively discuss the
issue of violence against women,

Resilience of Immigrants
conference
to flare up and circulate myths
about newcomers during waves of
economic downturns, such as the
one we’ve just gone through.
“In the last couple of
years as Canada has faced an
economic downtown, part of the
discourse, the public discourse
is [questioning] why Canada
is continuing to take in 240 to
255 thousand [immigrants] and
it’s based on this perception and
belief that they’re taking jobs
away from Canadians,” said
Este. “However it’s quite clear
that newcomers don’t take jobs
away from Canadians, they end
up doing the jobs that Canadians
don’t want to do.”

of Guelph graduate student
in the department of Family
Relations and Nutrition, gave a
poster presentation of her work
entitled ‘Newcomer Youth from

Stevenson explained that they
might also come to realize the
necessity to make the march an all-
women’s activity.
“The symbolism of having
women be able to march down the
streets and have their voices heard,
without having to compete with
any other voice, I thought that was
very powerful.”
Five Provinces: Challenges and
Coping Strategies.’ To complete
the research Cabal traveled across
the country and interviewed
immigrant youth to examine their
experience of their transition
in coming to Canada. Cabal, a
Colombian immigrant herself,
explained how she defines the
concept of ‘resilience.’
“For me, it’s a component not
only for the individual but it is
also about the community. It’s the
ability to do well no matter what
the adversities are around you,
but we also have to see…what the
resources are from the community
that are helping these young
people and how the community is
supporting them,” said Cabal.
Cabal also explained why it is
important to support newcomers
who come to Canada, and why the
concept of ‘resiliency’ has to be a
part of that process.
“[Resiliency] is definitely
important because we all want to
do well in life. From a social justice
perspective we want to give people
as many possibilities for them to do
well, as many possibilities to reach
their full potential, and it would be
sad to have so much talent in our
youth to go to waste,” said Cabal.
“So it’s a community perspective -
taking the responsibility from the
individual to the rest of us. What
are we doing to help these people?
I think that is what is important
because we all have a collective
responsibility.”

Keeping it real in Peter Clark Hall
Canadian Hip-Hop
proves its worth
through K’naan and
Shad K

he evening of Sunday
Oct. 3 witnessed one
of the most engaging
concerts Guelph has seen this
year. Along with Somalian/
Canadian musician K’naan,
London hip-hop artist Shad K
brought his guitar and mic to
Peter Clark Hall, adding another
to his long list of performances
in the city. The two played to a
crowded room of lively fans, who
appeared beyond satisfied with
the quality of performance they
received.
“I love playing in Guelph.
This is kind of where I started
playing, more than anywhere
else,” Shad said of his early
days performing in his second
year of university. Shad is one
of the few artists whose success
in music can be traced through
his academic development.
Debuting mostly at the Jimmy
Jazz in his early undergrad, Shad
is now working on a Masters
and touring with K’naan.
He seems to be taking the
development of his career in
strides, noting the importance
of staying true to one’s personal
growth.
“I don’t want my professional
development to be out of step
with how good I am. I’ve never
really had a hard goal, my thing
is just progress in terms of
getting better. I think if you get
better, all that stuff just comes
along with it,” Shad explained
before his set last Sunday.

Shad has carved out a
significant place for himself in
the hip-hop industry, making
himself into a real commodity
in Southern Ontario especially.
Part of what brought Shad to
focus during the early days of his
career, beyond his obvious ability
to blend clever rhymes with a
unique flow, was his knack for
comical creativity. This led him
to produce such cult classics as
The old Prince still lives at home,
the video to which mirrors the
intro from “The Fresh Prince of
Bel-Air.”
“I don’t want
my professional
development to be
out of step with
how good I am.”

“I think it’s just an extension
of my personality. The good thing
about humour is it warms people
up to you,” he said.
Shad admits that while he
still avoids taking himself
too seriously, his approach to
writing has evolved along with
his career.
“Now I think more about how
can I really be concise and be
sharp, and communicate my ideas
in a more direct way,” Shad said.
These changes have only helped
Shad to better hold an audience,
and the proof of his development
is written all over his new album
“TSOL.”

K’naan, who’s recently blown up
as a result of his song “Wavin’
Flag” being turned into an anthem
for earthquake relief in Haiti,
as well as the 2010 World Cup
tournament in South Africa.
K’naan played a set that surprised
even those fans unimpressed by
his recent mainstream appeal.
His ability to communicate with
his audience was by far his most
important talent, allowing him
to get across to the audience with
sincerity through even the most
exaggerated songs.
Everyone knows K’naan’s
world cup anthem, and everyone’s
heard it enough that they don’t
need it sung to them live at a
concert. Still, somehow he filled
the track with such emotion and
personal commitment, that any
feelings of restraint one may
have had were left behind. Each
time a chorus broke the room
seemed inflated with a sudden
surge of pride, and barely a
sneaker was left on the floor of
Peter Clark Hall.
The most impressive segment
of K’naan’s set was the callback
he received after leaving the
stage the first time around.
While a handful of unsuspecting
fans squeezed through the crowd,
thinking the show was over, those
remaining demanded more. They Thomas Beedham
demanded it with such conviction
that the Somalian hip-hop artist, K’naan had an entire concert hall of University students waving their

Zavitz Hall sends a Worldwide Hoodoo
Art students explore the
supernatural realm this

from which this weeks Zavitz art
exhibit derives its title, Samantha
Ack and Charlotte Hodgson
explain to me the story behind
“Sendin a Worldwide Hoodoo.”
“[There is a] common theme
that transcends through our work,”
explained Ack, who expressed what
the show is mainly about.
“[It touches on] mythologies
surrounding the preventative
measures people take [to keep the
supernatural spirits away]. It’s about
the things people do to avoid aliens,
ghosts... vampires,” Hodgson said
through her laughter.
The idea for the show originally
came to Hodgson while she was
listening to a woman in an online
chat room explain how she removed
evil spirits from her body by
involving a plate and two glasses of
water,” she said.
“[You can put] orange juice on
train engines at dusk to get rid of
ghosts as well,” added Ack, who
found some similarly unusual
methods online.
While portraying supernatural
superstitions, the show will
simultaneously explore some of the
oddities of culture.
“When you read [these articles
online], you can’t help but laugh.
But then everyday we pick up
pennies,” Ack said.
Both fifth-years in the specialized
Studio Art Honors Thesis, Ack and
Hodgson’s show is an “amalgamation
of [their] different practices.” It
also includes a collaborative piece
in which they recreate the “spirit
removal” procedure described by
the woman they encountered in the
online chat room.
Ack works predominately in
photography, but experiments
with the medium of painting as
subject, and actually called them
on the phone. The photograph
that accompanies each old picture
is a direct indication of how long
the phone call lasted. The longer
the phone call, the longer the
photo paper was exposed. Darker
photos indicate long phone calls,
whereas lighter ones indicate
short calls.
“I got a lot of hang-ups and
answering machines,” Ack said. “I
left some pretty lengthy messages.”
Hodgson, who described her
work as, “[taking] on different forms
depending on the concept,” also
contributed photos to this show.

Ice Cube “I am the
West”

F
or his newest effort, rap
veteran Ice Cube has rather
commendably released
“I Am The West,” completely
independent of any corporate label,
choosing rather to release it on his
own “Lench Mob Records.” This
marks Cube’s ninth full-length, and
first entirely independent release.
However, the effort is cut short
by Cube’s inability to dramatically
change his methods. Given the
chance to completely reinvent
himself and take advantage of the
complete lack in censorship, he
made a record that little muses in
corporate critique, but by and large
functions like any of his recent
releases.
In quite possibly his most
facetious act to date, the record
starts off with a spoken word track

express there’s more to
life than making money

oney is a factor that
effects all aspects of
life in today’s society.
It buys whatever it is that we
need and want, be it food,
clothes, tools or toys. We use
it to pay our tuition so that we
may go to university and earn
a recognizable degree, in turn
increasing our opportunities for
a career. The cycle concludes
itself as we seek out a career to
earn back that money. But the
question remains, do we need
money to be happy?
People generally want to be
happy in life, but the meaning
of happiness varies by person;
especially between those still in
school and those in the work force.
Colleen Savage, a second-year
student in Studio Art, explained
that, for her, happiness is strongly
connected to satisfaction.
“[Happiness involves] being
satisfied with all elements of your
life,” she said. She made it clear
that her criteria extended beyond
mere capital gain. Savage feels
that to be happy, one does not
necessarily have to have a lot of
money, but she did not deny that
there is a correlation between
happiness and financial gain.
As an art student, one might
almost expect such an answer.
The discipline has long been
known for its habit of attracting
that likens the cultural significance
of Cube’s birth to that of the
assassination of Malcolm X, and
the death of Martin Luther King
JR. It’s no surprise to anyone that
mainstream rap is one of the more
vain mediums, but this is nothing
less than politically ignorant.
The first half of the record is rich
with cheap rhymes and modern
references, which will no doubt
date these songs before they’ll ever
have the chance to be canonized.
Most notably “Urbanian”, a track
carried largely by three words,
two of which are “Google me.”
The track was most likely inspired
by Cube’s euphemism for sex, or
his obvious ego-stroking habit of
literally, Googling himself.
However, that is not to say there
are no redeeming qualities hidden
here, mostly tucked away in the
latter half of the record. Tracks
like “No Country For Young Men”
and “Nothing Like L.A” show an
intelligent, original progression
those more concerned with an
enjoyment of work, rather than
the hope for economic success.
But how a student in more
economically governed sectors
would respond was a valuable
piece of the puzzle.

U of G, replied with a note of
similarity to Savage when asked
the same question.
“Money brings happiness
only to some extent,” he said.
Simarjat noted the importance
of also being respected in order
to be happy.
“Money cannot buy respect,”
he added. In speaking with these
students, it seemed to be agreed
that happiness is determined
more by a person’s actions than
by their financial success alone. It
is still held by many that a certain
amount of money is necessary
in order for happiness, because
one must be able to afford the
essentials of life, including a
home, food, healthcare and
hygiene. Without these basics,
a person cannot live comfortably
and would often be under stress
finding ways to obtain these
essentials.

The latter is a tribute to Cube’s
hometown, devoid of unadulterated
slander. Of course, in traditional
Cube fashion, no credible action
is without it’s counterpart. I wish
I could say my initial assertion of
record closer “Fat Cat”as a corporate
music satire were true, but alas, it’s
yet another tribute to himself.
Through self-actualization,
light political critique, and tribute
songs, Ice Cube has put together
a collection of lengthy, uninspired
songs that prove he’s more like
the Grandpa Simpson of the
rap world, than the Ice Cube
circa 1990. However, this record
attests to the fact that Cube still
does whatever he wants when
it comes to his career. Ice Cube,
once a renowned linguistic (lets
not forget, he wrote the bulk of
the early NWA material), now
seems to have lost his way. Perhaps
someone should send him copies and “Death Certificate”. Not to Hood,” if not only to compare it
of “Straight Outta Compton”, mention a copy of “Boyz N The with “Are We There Yet?” 2/5
As a university student,
financial independence is still
a major determinant in mental
well-being. Students do not want
to depend on family or friends
for money; instead they want
to make enough money so that
one day they may support their
own families. But beyond this it
seems that students really aren’t
as concerned as one might have
thought with hefty incomes.
“I’d rather be happy in a career
than have a lot of money,” Savage
said, plainly stating her preference
for a life without the burden of
big earning. The desire and need
to be financially stable influences
students in their educational
choices as well. Students want
to be sure that they obtain their
desired university degree to be
able to have job opportunities that
will allow them to earn a basic
income. Earning a basic income
is an expectation of students from
the careers that they are aspiring
to and entering.
Having a surplus of money Sam Dawaele
does not guarantee happiness.
One need only look to the many
celebrities that have turned to
drugs and criminal behaviour
as a result of their big hustle
richness. If actions do determine
happiness, as students have
suggested, these people are likely
far from happy. It’s a pleasant
thought, that some students agree
a person with enough money to
afford the necessities of life can
achieve happiness through their
actions, and not through the
things they buy.

uelph is no slouch town.
Without a doubt, it has
an impressive array of
non-profit organizations and
research projects underway at any
given moment. From water and
energy conservation efforts, to local
food programs, to mental health
awareness, there is no end to the
support for social change.
Despite this, Non-profit
organizations have a tough go.
They seem all to be plagued by the
same dilemma; namely, how can
we make ourselves accessible to the
community without breaking the

he Guelph Gryphon men’s
hockey team is back for
their 2010/2011 season and
the bar of expectations has been set
high heading into the season opener
versus the Western Mustangs.
Coming off a second round playoff
loss last year to the nationally ranked
Lakehead University Thunder
bank? An organization known as
10Carden, seems to be the answer.
Sitting square in front of the city
hall, 10Carden presents the ideal
launch pad for activism.
What 10Carden does is provide
everything a non-profit organization
needs with an affordable
membership. Rented space, office
supplies and communication
technology can run up a high
price tag. 10Carden removes this
barrier so that all organizations can
participate and add effectively to the
Guelph community, limiting the
inhibitions that often keep projects
from getting off the ground.
Besides this, it also provides
a great location for networking
amongst groups in the community.
“We’re hoping it becomes a really
vibrant community hub in the future
where a lot of people will just stop
in and use it for different purposes, “
says Katarina Vuckovic, community
Collaborator at 10Carden.
Wolves, the Gryphons expect to
meet their rival in the playoffs again
this year and beat them.
Team captain, Kristafer Belan
shares the prospect of a great
upcoming season.
“We should do well. Our
expectations are high and I think
that comes from our coach [Shawn
Camp] who puts high expectations
on us and I think we can meet those
expectations.”
The Gryphons just came back
from an exhibition game against
the Notre Dame Fighting Irish,
after three hard played periods, the
Groups can meet, talk and gain
more visibility with the community
through an association with this
community space. 10Carden
fosters the diversity of groups as
well. An excellent example of this
is their association with CELP,
or Community Environmental
Leadership Programs.
CELP is an integrative program
where students learn about the
environment, as well as other core
subjects, and learn to apply them
within the community. They use
10Carden to conduct what’s known
as “Community Voices,” which are
interviews with members of the
community who are making social
change.
“It gives them a sense of all the
different groups involved in Guelph
and what they’re doing,” says Katie
Gad, a teacher within the program.
Not only are these interviews
extended into a journalism
project, but they also have inspired
Irish scored two goals in the last 10
minutes of the third to win 5-3.
Playing NCAA division one
teams is nothing new for the
Gryphons, they do so every year in
preseason to prepare themselves,
using tough opponents from the
American league to prepare for
their OUA season. “We get to pick
our opponents for preseason,” said
Camp. “We make sure to pick tough
opponents so that when we start the
season, we’re ready for anything.”
A big contributing factor to the
team’s success this year is going to be
all the returning players.
“Our recruits this year are pretty
good. The guys this year, that we
did get, we’re lucky to have them.
Coming from the team last year, you
can see that every year we’ve made
progress,” said Belan. “Last year we
lost a couple of guys and this year we
have most of the guys coming back
that are key players.”
A few players had big seasons
last year and hope to continue their
successes on the ice and in the
classroom entering this campaign.
Timothy Priamo, the first Guelph
native to play on the team in the past
12 seasons, was a rookie Ontario
conference All-Star voted in by
coaches from around the league,
and also received an academic All-
Canadian award.
Ken Paroff, a defenceman from
the Brampton Batallion was also in
attendance at a New York Ranger
development camp and according
to Coach Camp is among the top
recruits in the country.
OUA vs. OHL vs. NCAA
more community awareness and
involvement within the group.
After an interview with Sally
Ludwig with Transition Guelph, a
student decided to do an interactive
map of Guelph to see what would
be involved in the transition to
sustainability. Students examined
how they would have to interact
and work together with different
elements of the community.
This extended awareness, and the
connecting of different groups is just
what 10Carden hopes to achieve. It
makes sense that groups hoping to
change the community should be a
community themselves.
Katarina Vuckovic touched on
what was essential about 10Carden,
beyond providing a space for
meetings and presentations.
“Networking opportunities and
most importantly just being able
to cross paths on a daily basis
with someone working out of the
same space…to form relationships

there surely is a lot of reasons to do
so, especially in the past few seasons.
The OUA calibre of hockey is always
on the rise and has exponentially
risen over the past decade.
“Many OHL’ers play junior
[hockey] first and if they don’t turn
pro they come to school,” said Camp.
“They get a degree, become more
developed then hopefully move on
to play pro.”
Among the Gryphons 24 man
roster, 10 of them are from the OHL
and one from the WHL’s Brandon
Wheat Kings.
“I personally think we can contend
with any OHL team,” said Belan.
“[OUA] players are more developed.
Generally we’re older, more built,
and more mature than the guys
from the OHL.”
Although the NCAA has far
more money to give away on
scholarships, the NCAA cannot
take players from the OHL or any
other pro league. This leaves a large
portion of untouchable recruits for
the NCAA and is precisely why
Canadian schools, like Guelph, can
compete on a game-to-game basis
with NCAA division one schools.
Season Expectations
It is a general consensus among
the Gryphon players and coaches
that the playoffs are the first goal for
this season, but the focus on small
details is ultimately going to get
them there.
“It’s the little details we have to
pay attention to [to win] and we
have to come to practice Monday

and perhaps friendships and
collaborative potential,” she said,
were key elements when working
in the not for profit sector.
With 37 members and over 1,000
subscribers, 10Carden is well on its
way to becoming an essential part
of the Guelph Community.

rival, Western Mustangs. The team
agrees that Western is going to be a
big test for the team and an opponent
their going to have to beat in order
to achieve their goals for the year.
“We have six very mobile
defensemen who play a great
transition game for us,” said Camp.
Finesse is going to be a big part
of obtaining a win versus Western.
The Gryphons have a substantial
home ice advantage by playing on
Olympic sized pad, whereas Western
and many other schools play on the
standard NHL sized rinks.
“It comes as an advantage for us
because we’re used to playing on a
bigger surface,” said Camp. “You
notice a difference on power-play
because there so much more room
to move the puck and traditionally
our power-play has been strong.”
Fans can expect a fast paced affair
between Western and Guelph.
The game begins at 7:30pm on
Thursday, October 7th.
Hopefully the team sees a good
crowd against their biggest rivals
and opens up this campaign with
a win.

n over a decade, the Gryphons
Girls Field Hockey team has
not had the opportunity to play
on home field. Travelling as far as
British Columbia to the West and
Germany to the East, the girls
have competed on their fair share
of fields, seen thousands of foreign
fans, and driven many miles to get
to their game destinations that are
ultimately, somewhere else.
Although, on the surface it
appears as though playing on a
different field does not have much
impact on the team’s performance,
considering their high national
ranking, goalkeeper Dorothy
Marcy and forward Brienne Stairs,
two fourth-year players, disagree.
Training camp in Deutschland,
for example, exposed the girls to a
completely different game.
“The turf [in Germany] is
different, so we had to adjust to
that,” said Marcy.
Stairs added, “The Germany
teams’ styles are also a lot faster
because of the type of field they
train and play on.” Practicing and

play, as they won back their first
place position from Toronto. Their
second game on Saturday against

6-0 victory for the Gryphons.
But it was the game on Sunday

Parmegiani and Margot Irvine
have had in the works for some
time now. The conference aimed to
shed light on the complicated issue
of Europe’s Identity, what it means
to Europe, and what it means to
everyone else.
“That question of identity keeps
coming up and is widely debated
and widely discussed. To ask it
in the context of Europe is very
interesting,” said Margot Irvine,
faculty member in the dept. of
Literatures and Languages here at
the U of G.
Sandra Parmegiani, a faculty
member of the same department,
has worked on scholarship by the
renowned Italian author Claudio
Magris, a connection that acted
as one of the main push factors
in getting the conference off the
ground. With Magris’ name on
the bill others in the academic
field were ready to contribute.
Magris discussed his newest book
Blindly, which was hailed as a
masterpiece upon its release in
Italy and translated into English
shortly thereafter. The points he
discussed, as Parmegiani pointed
out, encompassed rather fittingly
the overarching themes addressed
at the conference.
“He went through a list of
revolutionary ideas, attitudes,
and problems that were peculiar
to the 20th century. Through that
illustration of the novel he really
addressed the crucial points,
ideologies, solutions, and failures of
[this era],” Parmigiani explained.
She and Irvine both admitted
to being influenced also by the
similarities that exist between
European life and our own
Canadian identity. A country
settled by Europeans, Canada still
maintains a very European way of
organizing itself.
“We thought its such a timely
topic, the issue of European
identities and the fact that Canada
is undergoing the same debate
about integration and immigration
at a different level, with different
problems,” Parmegiani said.
British journalist from the popular
Guardian newspaper Timothy
Ash, spoke jokingly of Canada’s
neighboring qualities, calling it the
next most likely candidate for EU
adoption in an article in 2006.
“[Canada] would be a much
easier fit than Ukraine, let alone
Turkey. It effortlessly meets the
EU’s so-called Copenhagen
criteria for membership, including
democratic government, the rule
of law, a well-regulated market
economy and respect for minority
rights (Canada’s a world-leader on
that),” Ash wrote. Though aware
of the limited likelihood of such
a thing ever happening, Irvine and
Parmegiani both divulged they
were impacted by the quote.

Part of the reason we are so
attracted to this idea of Europe,
this moving identity which last
weekends conference aimed
to unveil, is because of many
European regions success in
marketing themselves.
This was well exhibited in a
paper written by Katrina Sark,
a PhD student specializing in
contemporary German culture,
film, and fashion at McGill
University. Since Katrina could
not make the conference, fellow
academic Susan Ingram of York
U delivered her paper. In it she

three keynote speakers, he delivered
a paper on Sunday called “Western
Identity as a Unifying Force in
European and North American
Relations,” which for the most
part commended the West on their
contributions to the world.
Nemo attributed the world’s
current ability to support such
high populations and produce the
technology that has allowed our
current state of comfort, to five key
steps in cultural evolution. These
were the steps by which, according
to Nemo, the West (namely
European nations) created itself.
He noted first the Greek
development of science, which
revolutionized the way people
thought about life and why things
happened. This completely changed
the approach of governments and
rule makers. He also reminded his
audience of Greece’s invention of
a little thing called democracy. The
second of these leaps recognized
said.As a result he accredited Roman
law with being a strong foundation
for business, which carries weight
when we consider the nature of
business as being founded on the
principal’s of ownership and private
property, both concepts Roman law
solidified. In his third step, Western
civilization further developed the
idea of the Good Samaritan, placing
an increased burden on people to
feel responsible for the actions of
their fellow citizens.
The fourth step Nemo applauded
was a synthesis of the first three,
which allowed for a rethinking
of the ways we approach modern
life through education and our
following of the bible, which more
or less governed moral behaviour
on its own until this intervention.
Lastly came the idea of liberty -
one that we have so come to pride
ourselves on in Western culture - as
a positive to society. Nemo stressed
that beautiful and empowering
notion that we work better without
restraint, that liberty can create
by leaders of Western civilization.
Some could make the claim that
Nemo set himself up to be argued
with by making claims about the
majority of world citizens owing
their existence to advancements he
accredits to the West. He proposed
that if other cultures wish to look at
the West as bad, and blame them
for the problems faced by the world
today, then we have only to address
1/10 of these people. The other
nine would likely not be alive if it
were not for these advancements,
according to Nemo’s view.
“Every civilization is cruel and
wicked in some way. Every society,
if it is powerful will extend, so
the Western colonization is not
specific. What is specific is that this
civilization had much better means
than were in order before,” Nemo
said, reminding his audience that
the West has not been alone in its
mistreatment of people over the
years.
“I don’t mean that it is the
best culture we can have,” Nemo
under scrutiny and in many ways
seek to deconstruct it. Many would,
and did disagree with Nemo’s ideas,
which went beyond his praise for
Western culture. And while some
may feel that he glossed over the
West’s history of subjugating
civilizations, he makes an interesting
point about the resounding evidence
for its ability to progress. Western
civilization was responsible for the
production of the market economy,
which Nemo cited as the largest
revolution since that of agriculture
by the Mesopotamians. This in turn
allowed the population of earth
to expand from 650 million to six
billion, another point that could be
debated for its benefits.
It seems that to Nemo the
European identity and Western
identity in general is, while
many things, one of success and
innovation. Nemo’s talk served
as a reminder that the West is not
all bad, and that Western culture
has in fact led to some of the
greatest accomplishments known

The campaign was criticized
as being costly and perhaps
unnecessary; still it exhibited the
cities ambitions to rebuild itself. It
did attract investment and tourism,
as well as the kinds of entrepreneurs
and artists necessary to rejuvenate
a cities cultural identity at a time
when the systems in place were
under producing.
“[Berlin] has attempted to
maintain its traditional strength in
the fashion and media sectors, while
adapting them to the globalized

The sense that we can buy a piece
of Europe is not accidental, and
the example of Berlin proves that
great effort and finance is invested
into promoting that idea. At least in
part, Europe’s Identity seemed to be
predicated on its effortless talent for
self-promotion.

viewing Europe as one entity, and
Europe’s increasing difficulty to
sort its own issues.
The problem is, quite simply, that
the problem is always changing.
With so many different cultural
issues at hand, creating a rulebook
through which one can know
Europe would leave you buying the
latest issue every week. The different
regions therein create a microcosm
of the world, each one coming
with its own set of difficulties and
advantages as diverse as the histories
that make them.
“It’s hard to define Europe. You
only have old definitions, so I think
it’s a good time to talk about Europe
as a unity and as a problematic unity.
There is no fixed stable identity
of Europe; it’s [always] moving,”
said Sarah Katrib of the University
of Strasbourg, who flew in from
France just to speak at this three-
day event.
This difficulty was apparent to
Parmegiani and Irvine when they
set out on bringing the conference
to life two years ago. But it was not
their goal to define Europe, only to
discuss its identities; a goal that these
organizers, along with committee
members David McDonald, Russell
Kilbourn, and Mary Decoste, felt
was well achieved.
“I was very happy with the
participation we had from people
from all over, and people at all
ranks in their academic careers as
well. A lot of graduate students
came, and also a lot of very senior
professors and everybody in
between,” Irvine noted.
By the end of the conference,
Europe was revealed to be many
things. It was successful, and
also it was unsuccessful. Europe
was poor, and Europe was sexy.
Europe was nearly everything you
could imagine, because Europe
is large and complicated and
blends together a vast array of
different lifestyles and histories.
Last weekend’s conference may
not have handed out a definition
of modern Europe in a take-away
package, but for one of the world’s
most politically, economically, and
artistically important continents, it
handed out enough valuable insight
to fill your backpack.

From the hardwood to the rugby pitch
Gryphon leaves one
varsity team for another.

here comes a time in most
athletes’ lives where they
must make a decision
between the sports they play for
recreation and those they wish to
pursue at an elite level. For most of
these athletes that means they will
hone their skills in one sport, but
for some who were just born to be
active, one sport is just not enough.
Well Guelph has an athlete
amidst us that has the talent to
play on numerous teams at varying
levels of competitiveness; however
he recently made a crucial decision
in his athletic life which saw him
leave a sport he grew up loving to
play for a high school forte.
Nick Walters is currently
playing rugby for the Gryphons
rugby team, and since he left the
Gryphons varsity basketball team
at the end of his third year, he
hasn’t looked back.
Upon graduating from high
school, Walters was offered a
plethora of scholarships from
various schools in his choice of
three sports: basketball, rugby and
football.
Football was a distant third choice
for Walters, who didn’t want to move
out East to Bishop’s University in
Sherbrooke, Quebec. Nick was also
very animated toward the structure
the sport of football requires. “It’s to
structural,” said Walters. “It’s almost
like a chess match between coaches
and the players are the pawns.”
With football not being an
option any longer, rugby and
basketball were left and according
to Walters the professionalism of
the basketball team and coaches
made his decision easy.
“Basketball got me legitimate
approaches from coaches. Chris
O’Rourke [head coach] came and
had dinner with my family,” said
Walters.
Whereas rugby didn’t appeal to
him because of the non-professional
emails from players.
“We’ll party with you, show you
our girls and maybe give you a tour
of the campus,” imitated Walters.
The decision to play basketball at
the University of Guelph became
clear for Walters at that point.
The basketball Gryphons had
relatively good success in Walter’s
three-year tenure with the team,
making the playoffs twice, but for
Walters it wasn’t about the success
of the team that had him thinking
of leaving it was his position on
the team.
“My time with the basketball
team had run its course,” said
Walters. “The team was evolving
and I didn’t feel that there was the
roll for me that I wanted there. It
was time for me to move on from
the team.”
These thoughts are when
Walters began to take interest in
rugby again.
“I had always gone to watch the
rugby games,” said Walters. “It was
always something that I missed
because it’s such a fun sport.”

After Walter’s third year at
Guelph, the switch to rugby was
complete and his basketball days
were behind him, although there
is still emotional attachment to the
team and the sport.
“I see the guys in the gym and
sometimes I want to go play with
them again, but the aches and pains
and bruised hamstring from the
night before won’t let me,” laughed
Walters.
The transition from one sport to
another was seamless for Walters.
Walters got in touch with the
rugby coach, Darrel Devine, who
was eager to see him play. Walters
joined Coach Devines’ men’s team
in Brantford this past summer.
“This summer I’d drive down
to Brantford with [Devine]
and played club rugby there all
summer and just three and a half
months of playing there I was
able to pick it back up and come
right in and make an impact in
[Guelph],” said Walters.
Walters hasn’t looked back
since joining the team and is
really enjoying his time. He even
mentioned that if he chooses to
complete his masters at Guelph,
he’d play again. Due to there being
no eligibility rule in OUA rugby,
this option is open to him.

hockey season

university season. That’s
right: hockey season is back (insert
the old and better version of the
hockey night in Canada theme song
here) and your Gryphon men’s and
women’s hockey teams start their
regular seasons this weekend. The
men host the Western Mustangs
on Thursday night at the Gryphon
centre, while the women entertain
the Toronto Varsity Blues on
Saturday afternoon.
We are going to focus on the
women, who are coming off two
consecutive OUA championship
series losses to their bitter rival, the
Laurier Golden Hawks. The team
returns all of their top players from
last season. The only player lost to
graduation was backup goaltender
Chelsey Roy.

he availability and demand
for organic produce has
increased significantly in
recent years, although one factor
that has remained fairly consistent
is the lack of scientific information
supporting the perception that
organic food is more nutritious
than conventional.
According to Dr. E. Anne Clark,
a University of Guelph Plant
Agriculture professor, “You want
to be quite cautious in terms of
making claims about superior
nutritious value because it depends
on the particular nutrient.”
Clark referred to a study
published in 2008 by Charles
Benbrook, the chief scientist for the
Organic Center in the U.S., whose
mission is to “generate and advance
credible science on the health and
environmental benefits of organic
food and farming.”
The paper looked at all of the
peer-reviewed studies published in
the scientific literature since 1980
that compared the nutrient levels
in organic and conventional foods.
The paper then screened these
studies based on their experimental
design, growing conditions, and
Dayna Kanis, both finished last
season among the top nine point
scorers in the OUA. On defence
the Gryphons will have fellow fifth
year returnee Carla D’Angelo, who
brings back her shutdown abilities

The Gryphons lacked scoring
depth last season beyond their first

that some of the rookies can help to
improve their depth up front. Rookie
forward Katie Mora, a Guelph
native and St. James high school
graduate will be looking to make an
impact right away. Mora had a very
successful high school and minor
hockey career. She is a quiet leader,
and lets her play do the talking.

huge asset as she gets adjusted to the
OUA calibre of hockey.

difference in nutrient levels. The
organic produce tended to have
higher levels of antioxidants, which
the paper stated was an important
concern considering that the
average daily intake of antioxidants
tends to be below recommended
levels. The conventional produce
tended to have a greater protein
content and higher levels of the
essential minerals potassium and
phosphorous.
While these are pretty positive
results, researchers still haven’t
made a great deal of progress in the
past two years following the study.
Clark also stressed the reduced
environmental impact that eating
local and seasonal foods can have,
compared to shipping produce
internationally.

I Really Want To Get Into … graphic novels

n a few words, I think I speak
for everyone when I say that
the media is treading on
some thing ice with their habit
of repackaging old material, and
calling it entertainment. TV
hit Hawaii Five-0 is a perfect
example of this, as is the recent
announcement to bring back all six
Star Wars films into theatres, in 3D.
But I can now rest assured that I
have to come to grips with the fact
that there will always be a medium
that is adopting of original content
and thought: graphic novels.
As a kid, I was never interested
in comic books. My time was
better-spent drawing, or outside
riding bikes. As an adult (hello
post-teenage life, how’s it going?),
I can’t help but feel my time is

n my time as an enthusiastic
home cook, I have found that it
is usually the smallest changes
to my cooking arsenal that make
the most impact on the results.
I’ve discovered that by upgrading
certain items in my pantry, my food
is elevated disproportionately more
than the cost or trouble associated
with the change. This being said,
certain changes have more impact
than others and so, I have looked
back over my recent cooking
past and selected what I consider
the most beneficial changes to
share with other home cooks
looking to give their food
a modest jolt.

Upon doing some post-viewing
research, I realized that Batman’s
latest interpretation was actually
a direct amalgamation of The Long
Halloween, The Killing Joke, and The
Man Who Laughs.
This is what sparked my interest,
and boy am I glad it did. I’ve spent
a significant amount of time over
the last month or so reading and
researching graphic novels, which
to my avail, seems to be my saving
grace. Before you just jump into
any given graphic novel, be sure
to make sure it’s right for you first.
Ask yourself, what are you looking
Garlic
This is an obvious ingredient
and most everyone uses garlic in
their cooking. It is my assumption
that if you are reading a newspaper
food column, you are familiar with
garlic. But the reason I included
garlic on my list of kitchen
upgrades is that not all garlic is
created equal. When my culinary
creations were more primitive I
was a habitual user of the jarred
minced garlic (I know, I know…).
After learning the error of my ways
and figuring out that the liquid the
jarred garlic sits in drastically alters
its taste, I moved on to “fresh”
bulbs of white garlic from the
supermarket. And then a fortunate
discovery shook the scales from
my eyes and my cooking was
forever changed. Several vendors
at farmer’s markets (Guelph being
no exception) will be selling garlic
that looks slightly different than
supermarket garlic. The bulbs will
be mottled with purple and this is a
very good sign. Mince, chop or rub
this garlic against a rasp and you
were surly notice that the aroma,
taste and appearance of this
garlic far exceed that of
‘normal’ garlic. And
then there will
be no going
back.

I’m less concerned with imagery
and chose rather to go for storyline
and interest. As such, I find myself
blown away by Alan Moore’s The
Watchmen, and I’m very much so
looking forward to my inevitable
dive into the Preacher series.
Of course this begs the question
why I pinpointed graphic novels
as the free medium of choice, and
that’s simply because new stories (or
arcs, for particularly long editions)
are starting constantly. Just last
year a new Hulk series started to
much critical acclaim. And given
that it’s such a visual medium, the
movie adaptations can base much
of their cinematography off of the
illustrators work explicitly. Such
is the case with The Watchmen
(minus a few subplots) and even

This, also, may seem so basic that
you now think I am insulting your
basic intelligence. But again, not
all salt and pepper is created equal;
quite the opposite. Refined table
salt is cheap, easy to come by and
familiar. But the vastly superior
fine sea salt is not significantly
more expensive but has a much
better flavour than it’s refined
cousin and is more naturally
acquired. Without leaning toward
pretention, I feel it important to
say that ground pepper is an insult
to food and has no place in your
cooking. Pepper is a seasoning that
benefits greatly from freshness and
the moment it is ground, it looses
flavour rapidly. With incurring
any real expense, the home cook
can acquire a small pepper mill
and some black peppercorns from
a bulk store with a high turnover
and notice a vast different in their
food quality.
Olive oil
If you spend any time with
‘foodies’ you have most likely heard
that the quality of your olive oil is
vastly important. That your choice
in olive oil will change your food
for the better or worse. And that
you should spend as much as you
can on the stuff. They are right. But
it might be hard to really notice the
difference at first. I recommend
that if you can spare the money
(around twenty to thirty
dollars), you purchase a

Whenever you write an exam,
download a song from the internet
or watch a movie, you’re partaking
in the creative works of others. These
creations often require hours of
work to produce and incorporate the
talents of a highly educated, modern
workforce.
Although authors and publishers
continue to claim exclusive rights
to control creative content they
own, they must also contend with
technologies that allow consumers
to easily access, copy and distribute
creative content, often without
paying creators for the privilege.
Sadly, many students do not seem
to be up to speed on copyright laws,
classifieds page.
Some users had even made a
business out of selling old midterms,
exams, lab reports, quizzes and course
notes that were, in fact, intellectual
property belonging to the people
who created them.
(These enterprising young
individuals often filled out “Me”
under the author heading of an
advertisement, despite the fact only
the answers to particular questions
were in fact created by them).
When confronted, many people
replied the same way – they were
unaware that selling other people’s
work for profit was against the law.
As the up-and-coming generation,
students need to be fully aware
about copyright, and be engaged
in discussions about how to fairly
balance the rights of producers and
the rights of consumers.

food into your own life, now would

so. Guelph is an excellent place to
begin or augment this journey. Our
community is one of the leaders in
the local food movement within
North America. There is a large
diversity of operations that either
grow, process, or sell local food
products in this area.
It can be challenging, to be sure, to
incorporate local food into your diet.
First, you have to find out where you
can get it. This means you have to
do a bit of research. I will do some
of that work by writing about local
food sources in this column. It may
also prove to be difficult, especially
on a student budget, to purchase
local food on a regular basis. Food
sold at farmers’ markets can be
more expensive than purchasing the
same items at a chain grocery store.
An Empire apple at the No Frills
will probably be cheaper than the
same apple at the Guelph Farmers’
Market, so why not buy it at the big
box store as opposed to directly from
the grower? Are they really the same
items? The answer is maybe. They
could be the same genus and species,
have many of the same nutritional
attributes, and look similar, but there
are significant differences. When
I’m not advocating switching
your diet to all local sources,
especially if it is financially difficult
for you. And pretty difficult to
do for coffee drinkers. There are
reasons, however, ranging from
a personal health to societal
benefits, that hopefully will lead
you to consider putting more
local food on your plate. What is
the tipping point with respect to
local food purchases that would
cause a significant positive impact
for the environment and the local
economy? If you integrated food
from this region into five to ten
per cent of your diet, could that
be the difference in helping a farm
remain in operation or going out
of business and perhaps having
the land convert to residential or
commercial use, never again to be
used for food production?
In upcoming columns, I will
be writing about local food
operations that are attempting to
address environmental, health, and
socioeconomic issues facing the
agri-food industry. I will discuss
farmers’ markets, local farms which
may or may not be certified organic,
community shared agriculture
operations, restaurants, and
processors including breweries which
use locally-sourced ingredients. If

ccording to a research study
from UC San Diego, the
average American consumes
approximately 34 gigabytes of
information per day. That is a
ginormous amount of stuff. And
you thought your course reading list
was heavy. Information overload is a
common and growing problem.
Another study from UC Berkeley
estimates that the amount of new
information created each year is
about 5 exabytes. How much is that?
The Library of Congress contains
about 136 terabytes of information;
5 exabytes is equivalent to 37,000
new libraries the size of the Library
of Congress – each year.
Too. Much. Information.
BTW I’m quite amused that one
reaction to the information explosion
is the rise of the “Slow Information”

efore starting this article, I
googled “date of Michael
Jackson’s death” and believe
it or not, the first dozen articles told
me the exact time, whereabouts, and
manor of his death. This exploitation
of this eighties icon in the fast paced
times of 2010 would seem peculiar,
if it wasn’t due to the hype that
death now brings to our celebrities.
It baffles me that one man’s death is
an expressway for pop culture. As
if the modern-day music scene of
the twenty-first century wasn’t bad
enough, now we’ve made it socially

A
walk onto campus is usually
how most students’ days
begin here at the University
of Guelph. In a rush to the library,
I see a friend carrying a huge piece
of debris, quickly saying “Hi,” in
passing. I wonder what he is carrying,
not having a clue, I continue to make
my way to library.
As I pass Branion Plaza it hits
me, I finally make the connection
as to what the ‘debris’ is. To
my dismay, the cannon was no
longer surrounded by the privacy
enclosure I expected to see for at
least a week. Then to my surprise,
I see Master of Fine Arts student
Dawn Johnston, working away on
her deconstruction of the cannon,
despite the vandalism that occurred
to her privacy enclosure.
I am not sure what to make of
this premature unveiling, as I have
been following stories about this
particular art project of Johnston’s.
Reactions vary between students;
for some curiousity peeks as they
pass, for others pass without
movement. Think “slow food” for
information (slow food is like Burger
King in reverse). These folks advocate
cutting off social media from a
campus, turning your smartphone
off on evenings and weekends, and
locking out tools from your computer
(or even turning it off completely).
By all means, blame the messenger;
after all it’s the technology, not us,
right?
In a “social experiment”Harrisburg
University did block Facebook,
Twitter, MySpace, et al from the
campus a few weeks ago. Much
(unintentional) hilarity ensued.
Faculty and staff had no access, but
students just used their phones to
continue accessing the services. D’oh.
#fail.
Keeping up with your course
reading is one thing (but you are
doing that right?). Keeping up with
acceptable and even, I dare to say,
a trend, to create revenue off of
someone’s death.
Michael Jackson’s death was
only logs on the fire of this MTV
age. With such musical acts as Lil’
Wayne, Justin Beiber and Ke$ha,
it’s almost hard to stomach any kind
of musical media, be it the radio
or MTV. The new thing to do is
be completely obsessed with hot
beats, dance tracks, explicit lyrics,
and derogatory attitudes towards
all women in general. This causes
someone who, although involved
and informed on this “top 40” music
noticing, while some stop to watch
or talk to Johnston.
Having mixed reactions myself
such as being infuriated and
outraged by the act of vandalism, at
the same time curious and inspired
seeing Johnston’s work. I recall
one of the articles I read called
“Cannon gets a Makeover” written
by Susan Bubak, which included an
interview with Johnston, who said,

there are things you need to know

CCS feels your pain. CCS is the
IT services group on campus. They
provide the network, Internet access,
GryphMail, licensing software, and
much more. Not just wires, cables,
and all stuff digital, the CCS staff
are the uber-geeks, and they are here
to help. The stuff they know, and the
tools and services they provide, are
important to you.
For example, UG is constantly
bombarded with spam and phishing
emails (don’t,don’t,don’t reply to those
emails that ask for your password.
Don’t.). Millions of email messages
arrive at UG’s front door each day;
97% are spam and are blocked. But
that stuff that gets through, it can be
nasty. Updating you on these threats

to the world’s musical identity.
Now to be fair, most of these
media-influenced musical artists
write some of their own music,
play some sort of instrument, and
try to have meaning in their songs.
But for the most part, it’s all about
making the most money. It’s about
making a song that will be the
“big hit” and that hit needs to be
bought on iTunes, heard in every
shopping mall, and played to death
on the radio. Popular music today
is always marketed to the younger
generations, to the point where it’s

I hate that,” so I continue on my
walk to library with this in mind.
It’s now around six in the evening,
I am on my way to the University
Centre to grab a dose of caffeine and
Johnston’s packing up for the day,
she attempts to enclose the cannon
but the east side of the cannon
remains exposed. Johnston gathers
can save you a lot of angst and
down-time. Service updates help too.
Knowing that GryphMail is being
upgraded and offline for a few hours
on a Sunday morning makes a big
difference if you are trying to submit
your term paper at the last possible
minute before the deadline. CCS
also has great services that provide
cheap (or often) free software.
So, follow CCS on Twitter
(ccsnews) or subscribe to their
newsletter via the RSS feed (www.
uoguelph.ca/ccs/news) or checkout
their website periodically (www.
uoguelph.ca/ccs). Doing all this
would be just more overload; pick the
one that works best for you. You can
even follow me (mridley). And while
you are at it, follow the President
(UG_President); Alastair always has
something interesting to say.
So I recommend one way to reduce
almost like they have no choice, no
freedom to say they like anything
else. And if I’m asked who John
Lennon is one more time, I’ll blow
a gasket.
The thing is, the music industry
today is nothing like it was when
such artists like the Beatles, Led
Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, or
any other classic act that influenced,
however distantly, pop music as we
know it now. There are a handful
of new good rock bands and those
aren’t deemed as popular by the “top
40” generation. If only they could
appreciate the classic guitar or the
her belongings, taking a chunk of
debris with her, and perhaps she will
arrive to her art tomorrow and it will
not be any different than she left it.
With Johnston gone, I sit
on a nearby picnic table and
appreciate Johnston’s expression
of art, while embracing the chaos
of the reactions, if any at all, of
people passing by. I partake in the
curiousity by exploring the cannon;
the barrel is almost completely
chiselled. It’s really fascinating to
see the progression between the
bare cannon, and the close to 30
years of paint layers still remaining.
Part of me wants to sit here all
night and guard the cannon but it’s
not my place. Let’s hope that despite
the controversy surrounding the
cannon can be put aside and allow
Dawn Johnston to complete her
vision for this historical object. Just
let it be. I glance at the time and it’s
time to go. The sun will set and all
I can do is hope, like Johnston, that
this monument will be left alone.

hen you hear someone
talking about student
fees specifically, they
are not talking about tuition. Most
students are totally unaware of
where their student fees are going,
which organizations are recipients
of this money or even that they pay
them at all. The Ontarion urges all
students to know how their student
fees are being dispersed. Student
fees are mandatory so should you
not be aware of where your money
is going and how the fees you pay
are being used?
If you, like many of your peers,
do not know where your student
fees are going, go to Webadvisor
and check it out. This information
is easily accessible for all.
The importance of knowing how
the various student fees are allotted
will be different to each person. But
consider the level of responsibility
that the taxpayer demands of their
government. They want to know
what their money goes towards. So
shouldn’t it follow that our interest
in our student fees be somewhat
similar?
Most, if not all, of the
organizations and groups that
receive our student fees make the
most of that money and make their
budgets transparent for anyone who
wishes it to be. But on principle,
the student should take interest
in the money they have paid in
student fees and expect that the
organizations and groups should be
held accountable for how they spend
the fees they receive from students.
Students should be able to demand
that their fees are used responsibly.
But most simply don’t care.

student fees and now the dome may
be unusable permanently.
Several semesters ago, there was a
referendum vote to decide whether
or not the athletic department
would be able to collect more
money from student fees to fund
the building of a new athletic centre
facility. The students voted yes and
athletics was allowed to increase the
student fees they collect to fund the
new athletic centre project. While
the new facility that students are
currently paying for will certainly
benefit the U of G students of the
future, many have pointed out that
the students who voted in favour
of the increased fees may remain
ignorant to exactly where and what
the money was going towards,
despite having voted in favour of it.
Of course it’s great that there
will be a brand new athletic centre
in approximately ten years, but the

RE: GIVING THANKS FOR
BLOOD DONORS
During this month of giving
thanks, I would like to thank
the dedicated blood donors
and volunteers of Guelph who
attended and volunteered at
local clinics so far this year.
The need for blood is always
ongoing. Two years ago, when I
was 17, I was rushed to hospital
for a major gastrointestinal
haemorrhage. I received eight
units of blood, recovering over the
next few days. I was on a no solids
diet for five days so I wouldn’t
bleed again. It happened anyway.
My blood pressure dropped from
120 over 80 to 50 over something.
They couldn’t measure the second
number. I received another eight
units of blood and stayed on
the no solids diet for another
six days. They then performed
a shunting operation, requiring
another three units. Over my life,
due to chronic health problems,
I’ve received a total of between
70 and 100 units of blood.
The need for blood doesn’t take a
break over long weekends. While
there is a continuous need for all
blood types, there is currently a
greater need for blood donors
with O-negative blood. If a
hospital patient requires a blood
transfusion in an emergency
situation, and if there is no time to
determine the patient’s blood type,
O-negative blood can be used.
University students may not feel
that we have time to donate blood.
However, it only takes an hour of
your time to save up to three lives.
As Thanksgiving approaches,
if you haven’t given blood, ask
yourself: “Why not?” Please

We’ve had a spat of racist graffiti
on campus in the first month of
school and every one of us ought
to be enraged about it. We should
be absolutely livid and ready to act.
Now, just to be clear, I’m white.
I’m a person with white privilege,
so I had the luxury of being
shocked when, just a few hours
into move-in day, racist graffiti
appeared in South Residence.
Racism exists every day, whether
white students of this campus see
it or not, we must acknowledge it
and call out racist behaviour and
language. White people, I mean
it! We need to call this stuff out!
Our silence not only forces our
racialized sisters and brothers
to take on this struggle alone,
but also condones racism. Every
time we let a racist comment
from a colleague, friend or family
member slide the message sent is
that it’s okay. We must confront
racism where and when we see
it; otherwise we isolate ourselves
from the struggle.
This means we also need to
look within, at our own words,
behaviours and inaction that
contribute to this terrible system
of privilege and oppression. We
