Project Outline
Located on Nantou County Route No. 131 in Taiwan, the regional geologic map shows that the several fault zones cuts through the job site
area, rock mass is fragile and weak. A great landslide up to 80m wide and 30m high had been caused by a torrential rainstorm in 2007. The
existing anchored slope had been severely damaged with the main structure being pulled out and exposed after the landslide, forming a
huge heave on the toe of the slope.
Design Concept
It is located inside the water supply reserve of Reservoir Ming-Tan, the foundation of the structure confronts the problem of water level
change in the reservoir itself. After the stability analysis, a design was adopted to drill concrete piles of 1.5m diameter, 20m and 30m
long installed every 2.5m beneath the 8.5m high of RC retaining wall. Above the RC retaining wall, wrap-around reinforced structure was
®
constructed: 10m and 8m long of ACEGrid installed within the structure, slope inclination 1V:0.3H, wall height 17m dividing into 4 stairs. A
full interior and exterior drainage system was installed in the reinforced structure to effectively resolve the poor drainage problem.

Design Concept
Considering the condition that the geology of the bottom of gully was more vulnerable than either side and the construction site was limited by
®
terrain, the design company designed 16 to 18 meters high ACEGrid reinforced retaining walls. Hammering soil nails into the deep-seated
®
failure and combining with ACEGrid , the rear area of the first and second stages of the retaining wall, was targeted to diminish concerns of
slope stabilization resulted from inadequate buried length of geogrid in constrained site. Meanwhile, furnishing micro-piles with the foundation
was essential to increase the sliding resistance of the structure. The surface and subsurface drainage system was built for waterway.

Project Outline
The client of this project bought a land to develop a residential area for their employees. However, the land had an irregular terrain due to it
being on the crest of a hill and causing huge leveling difference. The substantial difference of level required the construction of platform to
be the foundation of house; therefore, numerous of retaining walls were needed to create the safe residential area.
Design Concept
The uneven terrain demanded a lot of ground cuts in order to set the same level of foundation. The project was about the utilization of
geogrid to build many of the biggest retaining walls which were designed to satisfy both static and dynamic loads. The total length of the
®
retaining walls was more than 300 meters and the height was 7 meters to 12 meters. ACEGrid was used in the project. The project adopted
®
the face of stacking concrete block for the purpose of aesthetic finishing. The results were even better than expected. ACEGrid retaining
wall was an efficient construction method and less cost than usual method of rigid concrete wall. The block face formed a curved retaining
wall to give the graceful appearance.

Project Outline
In consequence of earthquake attack in September 21 1999, the existing drainage facilities has been seriously damaged, the water from the
top of slope washed away the slope surface causing erosion and landslide which jeopardize the structural safety of buildings along the slope.
Therefore, the landslide and slope failure treatment were priority concern for the community’s safety solution.
Design Concept
The project adopted composite method. The installation consisted of setting concrete piles and dam at the bottom of the slope in order to
®
stabilize the foundation. The top of concrete dam was designed with reinforced retaining wall using ACEGrid . Furthermore, protective gabions
have been installed at the bottom of slope by replacing the traditional method. The whole project effectively reduced 70-80% of the concrete
amount.

Due to the Morakot Typhoon brought with abundant rainfall and lack of efficient drainage facility, excessive rain seep and accumulated behind
the retaining wall causing landslide, damages, consequently putting the houses at risk.
Design Concept
®
The reinforced structure was principally built with high strength and high resistance woven geogrid (ACEGrid ) , the purpose was to replace
the bulky and high energy consumption of concrete structures. Considering the local topography, the construction height was 16m, and
length of 43m. In addition, the project design consisted in arc shape wall surface in order to adapt the present road condition. To enhance
groundwater discharge within the retaining wall, the drainage material and aggregate were placed between layers, On the other hand, at the
surface of the retaining wall, channels were installed to strengthen the interception of water surface.

Addressed in Miaoli, in order to promote the local tourism development, the road was designed to broaden and enhance the quality of touristic
services.
Design Concept
Considering the context stability, the maximum use of ecological reinforced method was chosen for the project solution.
Nevertheless, due to large sections of the road were seated on the edge of slope and the geology was much weaker, thus the composite anchor
method was applied at the bottom of the reinforced structure to ensure long-term stability.
During the construction process, not only material transportation but also working period was reduced. This solution provided a touristic-beautiful
ancient parkway for visitors from everywhere.

Huoyanshan tunnel in Miaoli was constructed to lead debris flow across traffic road. As a result of the debris flow from mountain towards
the vehicles, local people’s safety was seated in risk. Furthermore, due to the length of tunnel was insufficient, debris flow still obstructed
traffic and created the inconvenience of life.
Design Concept
Taking into account the disasters caused by the weather, it was necessary to find a solution to the problem. In order to reserve the nature
of Huoyanshan, the design adopted reinforced embankment to lead the amount of debris to rock detention pond to ensure safety of people
and vehicles. Additionally, the reinforced embankment facilitated maintain work of the tunnel for transportation of stone which obstructed

A 5m height wrapped around MSEW reinforced with ACEGrid was adopted in this repair work. The vertical spacing of placing ACEGrid is
designed to 0.5 m after a well compaction of backfill, and combined with steel pile and RC plate as the foundation structure to maintain the
stability of the structure. Longitudinal and latitudinal drainage ditches and geomat have designed to be placed under the foundation slope to
prevent erosion issue during plentiful rainfall season.
The consumption volume of steel pile and concrete is 5% less with whole wrap-around reinforced structure when compared to traditional
method, and by using in-situ soil as the backfill material to achieve the most cost effective.

The Gateway Upgrade Project including duplication of the existing Gateway Bridge river crossing, lanes additions and widening.
Many of the constructions sat on the flood plain area of the Brisbane River. The flood plain was comprised by soft and saturated deposits.
Design Concept

Layers of high tensile strength PET woven geotextile, ACETex , were installed over the granular working platform and drainage layer or
above the top of columns. One or more layers of geotextile placed between top of columns comprised a load transfer platform. The load from
the embankment must be effectively transferred to the columns to prevent punching of the columns through the embankment fill creating
differential settlement at the surface of the embankment. When the columns were placed close enough together, soil arching would occur
and the load would be transferred to the columns as well.

Problem:
Beaches and coastal dunes at Las Coloradas, Mexico, were severely affected after Hurricane Wilma Stormed through the northern coast
of the Yucatan Peninsula in October 2005. Dune destruction connected open sea with lagoon systems at some points, with disastrous
consequences for the local ecosystems.
The regional economy depends on salt extraction, and therefore interactions between open sea water and salt-production lagoons brought
enormous economical losses to the Las Coloradas community.
To repair the damage caused by the hurricane, urgent acts were taken. Beaches were filled to close the breakages between sea and
salt-production lagoons. However, those actions did not assure a reliable long-term solution. The probabilities of such meteorological events
to recur in this area are high. Therefore, it was imperative to build a natural structure to fully guarantee the entire dune stabilization, avoiding
littoral drift alterations.

Solution:
®
A reinforced dune using ACETube covered with sand for revegetation was built along 2.5km
next to the coast during 2006, and increased to 3.9km by September 2007. The structure
protected the salt-production lagoons without affecting coastal processes in the area and
natural evolution of surrounding beaches. Dune stability, beach performance, and littoral
processes have been continuously monitored since reconstruction started in May 2006.
It is concluded that the implemented structure is performing as expected and the dune stabilized
shows no obvious risk of collapsing under extreme climatological events. However, some critical
®
areas where the ACETube is fully exposed to wave action must be permanently monitored.
The technology described herein represents a reliable solution; however, it is expected that
®
much experience will be gained to improve, in the near future, the use of ACETube as
elements for dune reinforcement.

Solution:
® ®
The method of woven polypropylene geotextile tubes ACETube was adopted to perform as breakwater and pipe supporting. ACETube
were selected as an environmentally responsible solution and for their flexibility to adapt to a dynamic maritime media. Preliminary study
results showed that 5 of the 7 oil conduction pipes had lost their foundations due to beach erosion. The most critical cases were detected
along pipes 6 and 7 where, at some points, gaps between the sea bottom and pipe were at 2.5m. For each particular case the proper
arrangement was defined to fill the existing gaps.
The submerged breakwater was designed to achieve two main objectives: to reduce the incident wave energy on the beach by controlling
the wave-breaking process, thus promoting natural sand accumulation shoreward of the structure; and to perform as a confining element
®
for beach nourishment. The breakwater cross section design was built with a 7.8m-circumference principal ACETube seamed to a
®
2.5m-long scour apron and to a smaller ACETube that works as an anchor tube (1.4m-circumference).
®
Installation of pipe support elements concluded by the end of July 2009. The photos also show the ACETube flexibility and adaptation
to marine media—key points for this project’s success, giving complete support where required. As for breakwater performance, creating
a wave energy reduction zone, with turbulence generated shoreward inducing sand accumulation.
During the breakwater installation process, beach evolution profile surveys were done for all sections, corroborating that the structure was
performing as expected, promoting natural sand accumulation shoreward of the structure.

A Cyclone Gonu attacked the Le Maridien Aqah Beach in Fujarah, UAE in 2007, it caused a serious damage in scouring great amount of
sand. The dynamic equilibrium of sediment transport was broke due to the sand losing. The natural view was destroyed in this disaster. It
will take a long time to recover to the original landscape, a submerged breakwaters structure is required for reclaim the land and protect the
beach.
Design Concept
The suitable solution is to build submerged breakwaters creating a manmade beach area in length 227.5m and width 225m to absorb the
® ®
wave energy. Four types of ACETube were used in circumference from 8.6m to 17.2m and length from 52m to 77m. Each type ACETube

Zhuoshui River is the longest river located in central of Taiwan. The flood season initiates from May to November every year, the annual
precipitation in drainage basin is roughly 2000~3000 mm and the peak flood flow over the century could reach up to 2.4 thousands cu m/sec
causing serious problems of erosion.
Design Concept
In order to protect the river side, the most suitable solution adopted was to build five groins combined with series of gabions as revetment
®
in the erosion area. The P.C. hollow foundation pile, as the main part of groin as well as for ACETube , has been applied to protect the
foundation of structures. The groin’s design is set 4.0m wide, and it should be covered after with a layer of concrete and riprap to prevent
®
from external damages. ACETube , flexible structure, provided with the superiority of excellent material confining was also applied beneath
®
the groins to protect the foundation of structures and therefore strengthen the base. ACETube was constructed both side of the groin, and
®
a layer of gabions was placed above the ACETube to become the protection of the flexible structure. The groin successfully reduced the
flow rate near shore, and the revetment effectivelly resisted the problems of erosion.

Kuanionkong Stream, in the northeastern of Tucheng District, New Taipei City, extends approximately 4.1km. In year 2001 summer, Nari
Typhoon came with abundant rainfall and made the water level soar. The impulse of flow scoured the natural bank to induce the collapse and
cause the deposit in the streamway. The pretty scenery was gone with the hit by the storm and looked like in pandemonium. In the following
year, the government budgeted for 450m long reconstruction at the first phase.
