Also, please don’t forget to have your piano tuned. This will affect our hearing and an out
of tune piano will not sound good. Your ear is just as important to your piano playing as
your hands.
In this lesson, we will focus on learning the names of the notes on your piano or keyboard.
This is well explained in the video. However, the graphic of a piano keyboard below should
help as you seek to memorize the names of the white notes.
3. Day Three Assignment
In this lesson, we will play “Ode to Joy” with the right hand.
Please see the video for explanations of the hand position as well as the numbers of
your fingers.

Watch the video and understand the basic concepts of treble clef, bass clef, notes, and
measures.
1. Day One
Watch the video on treble clef reading. Then, try to play the song “Lightly Row.” Feel
free to write in the names of the notes.
2. Day Two
Review the video and check your work. Be sure that you are playing “Lightly Row”
correctly.
3. Day Three
Watch the video on bass clef reading. Then, try to play the song “Adagio.” Feel free to
write in the notes.
4. Day Four
Review the video and check your work. Be sure that you are playing “Adagio” correctly.
5. Day Five
Watch the video on playing “Jingle Bells” by ear. Then, start filling in the notes below.
Some of the notes are given. In the next lesson, we will get the answers.

Watch the video on rhythms and time signatures. Be sure that you understand the
concepts of whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes. Also, learn how each measure adds
up to four counts.
2. Day Two
Before watching the video on “Good King Wenceslas” please try to write in the notes to the
song below. Then, try to play it. Use the video for practice tips. This is the first song that
requires both hands to play at the same time.

Except for the last line! Try to figure out the last line of the song. The first note is given for
you.
1. Day one
Watch the video on learning the ties (connects two or more of the same notes), pick up
measures (only occur at the beginning of the song) and dotted half notes (three counts).
2. Day Two
Learn about the C and G chords. They will be used in “O When the Saints.”
Play “O when the Saints.” Try the right hand first, then left hand, and then put both
hands together. The music is on the next page. Feel free to mark any notes.
4. Day Five
Play “Joy to the World” by ear. An outline is given below. You are not playing the entire
song. Answers will be given next week. Please note that this song starts on the high C.

Watch the video on 2/4 time, 3/4 time (waltz), eighth notes, rests, and the G position.

Watch the video. Understand how to get into the G position as well as the G position
chords.
3. Day Three.
Write in the notes to “Hot Cross Buns” in the music below. Try to play as written as well
as the variations described in the video.

Write in the notes to “Waltz” in the music below. Try to play as written as well as the
variations described in the video.

Understand dotted quarter notes (1 and a half counts), key signatures (all of your songs this
week will have f sharps), and the C chord (G C E).
2. Day Two
Learn your new chord (G C E ) in the C position. Practice the Alberti bass lines.
3. Day Three
Write in the names of the notes (if you need to) and play the “ Deck the Halls” below. The
video contains the practice tips.
4. Day Four
Play Mozart’s Andante on this page. Don’t forget that line one (the first four measures) and line
three (measures nine through twelve) are the same. See if you can do the optional alberti bass
described in the video.

Watch the video and understand sharps and flats, the accidental rule, and the new
notes in the G position.

Watch the video and name sharps and flats on your piano.
3. Day Three
Play “A little Blues” and write in the notes if you need to. Don’t forget to “swing” the
eighth notes as demonstrated in the video.
4. Day Four
Play the second half of “Deck the Halls” on the next page. Be sure to understand the
“pick up hand” technique described in the video.

Try to figure out “My Country Tis of Thee” by ear. The first note of each line is given to
you. Answers will be given next week.

that your chords are C (CEG), F/C (CFA), and G/B (BDG).

Figure out the chords to “My Country Tis of Thee.” You need to write in a chord symbol
where there is a blank. Your choices are G (GBD), D/F# (F#AD), C/G (GCE) and Am (ACE).
