Read the book “The Smile That Went Around the World” by
Patrice Karst. Explain that this book shows us just how much
impact we can have beginning with a simple smile. The Smile That Went Around
the World picture book.
After reading the book, have students move out into a large
circle for our class discussion. A series of wonder questions
10:10am will be asked for students to contribute what they think/feel to
the class. Each student will add something and if they cannot
think of an answer that’s okay, they can either think of their
own different wonder question or I will provide a new one for
them to ponder):
The class “wonder stick” will

discussion
It can make a person feel like they are welcomed/loved
It can inspire someone to be kind to others
You can change someone’s mood
Most importantly like in the book, it can inspire each and
every person to smile!
2. I wonder what some other small actions are (like a smile)
that can create big change …
Hugs and kisses
Random acts of kindness
Helping someone with jobs
Being there for a friend
Some students may show the effect that a single smile can
have on many people, others may re-enact a story they have
already heard, and some may create their own story. Allow
creativity and remind students that when we work in small
groups we make sure all ideas are included and that we are
empathetic to each individual.
Once students are happy with their role play, they will use
their iPads to film their short scenario. Assist them if they
need however they have experience filming themselves from
previous lessons. We will watch each video before the end of
the day and reflect on our own actions translating in the
video.
