Provision of Muslim-friendly shopping mall

INTENT

To provide an islamic retreat house for the client that provide the absolute comfort and

tranquility to the client and follow the sharia law.

SHARIAH PRIORITIES

An Islamic retreat house should follow the guidelines that been provided from the government

and did not break the sharia law. The Islamic retreat house should have the general features,

good composition of space and services, the interaction of the retreat with the environment and

good security.

DEFINITION

Retreat house means a house for the client to move back or withdraw from his busy life and

take a rest from any work and problem.

SUBJECT 5.0: SPATIAL ORGANIZATION

REQUIREMENT:

5.1 Living Room

 The space should fit all the family member and guest.

The space for the living room should have these requirement for comfort and obeying shariah

law :

a) Space requirement for a living room

A living room is design based on how many members of the

 household’s family. The living room should also considered guest space

that comes visiting so that it will not bring discomfort to the guest.

b) The arrangement of furniture should be organize strategically and

neatly so it won’t cause bad circulation in the living room.

5.2 Dining Space and Kitchen

 The space for the household to store and cook food and beverages and it is another

place for the family to have interaction between each other either cooking or eating

together. The size of the dining space and kitchen should be enough for the household

and the guest to dine in together.

 The decoration for dining room should not be excessive and luxury as long as it not

break shariah law.

ADDITIONAL USEFUL CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDE TO PROVIDE:

 A space that separating men and women so there will be ikhtilat among genders.

 Strategical planning of furniture that allows conversation among the family members

become more effective and bonding.

 Living room should have television, bookshelf and game console (if necessary) for

entertainment among family.

 Separate from private space.

 Appreciate nature by having opening that facing towards trees and plants.

STRATEGIES:

5.1 Living Room

1. Did not hang up or put figures or pictures of humans and animal in the living room.

2. Using passive design to save energy e.g. Windows and openings to allow natural

sunlight and air to enter the house.

3. The living room is not excessive with expensive decoration or furniture.

5.2 Dining Room and Kitchen

1. Good circulation to avoid the household bumping to each other.

2. Suitable decoration and environment that make the household comfortable to eat the

meal.

3. An extra table for multipurpose task such as cutting vegetables and fruits, preparing

ingredients, kneading flour etc.

SUBJECT 6.0: Private

REQUIREMENTS:

6.1 Bedroom

 The amount of bedroom should be enough for the household and the guest to sleep

over. The bedroom must separate between male and female excluding parent bedroom.

As for the hadith reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud: ‘Order your children to pray at the
 age of 7 and beat them when they are 10 (if they do not pray) and separate their beds.’

Thus, even though siblings are mahram, but the room should be separate to avoiding

consequences that may happen.

 Bathroom should be provide in each bedroom for private hygiene and avoid from

seeing each other aurat. Private matter such as changing clothes, shaving body hair etc.

can be done without worrying other family member from seeing it.

6.2 Bathroom

 Other than bathroom in the bedroom, a bathroom should be provide for the usage of

the household in the retreat. The bathroom should be placed far from the living room

and dining room so it will be private and far from bad odor.

 Providing water resources for istinjak in the bathroom or other material such as tissues.

As it is said from Anas Radhiyallahu 'anhu he said.“The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa

sallam came to the place of abolition then me and a young man my age brought a

vessel from the water and a small spear then he was purified with the water" [Hadith

Sahih Riwayat Bukhari no. 151 and Muslim no. 271]

ADDITIONAL USEFUL CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDE TO PROVIDE:

6.1 Bedroom

 A space for the household to worshipping Allah.

 Addition of veranda or windows in the room that facing the view that household can

appreciate it.

6.2 Bathroom
  The suitable space for the bathroom utilities that not too cramp and narrow for

discretion.

 Selection of material that will not cause harm and discomfort to the household e.g.

porcelain tile is a well-known decision for bathroom floors. Porcelain is a denser, less

permeable and harder choice that offers more noteworthy stain and water opposition

than fired tile. In addition, it's reasonable for brilliant in-floor warmth to keep feet

toasty on cool mornings

STRATEGIES:

6.1 Bedroom

1. Bedroom must be facing toward north to collect as much sunlight to the room.

2. Should be place at the upstairs/back of the house to provide privacy.

3. Enough space for furniture, prayer space, etc.

6.2 Bathroom

1. Avoid from facing the qiblat.

2. Providing facilities for the elderly /disabled people.

3. Toilet utilities material that last long and ergonomic.

SUBJECT 7.0 Location

REQUIREMENTS:

7.1 Site

 For retreat house, there has several component in choosing a site:-

a) The natural environment

The retreat should be surrounding by the natural environment so that the

household will feel calm and comfortable e.g. beach, forest, mountain etc.

b) The place should close to a community or resident for communication and

supplies of daily things also for visiting masjid for congregation and jumaah

prayer.

c) The accessibility of the house should be easy to found and provide a parking

space for the family and guest.

7.2 Orientation

 The orientation of the building is important as it is allowing you to get enough sunlight

during the day, good ventilation inside the building and blocking excessive sunlight to

enter the room,

 For certain cases, orientation of the building can catch the nicest view for the retreat

and it provides eye catching and pleasure for the household.

ADDITIONAL USEFUL CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDE TO PROVIDE:

  The site should be far from bad odor and animal so they won’t have any damage or

extra expenses to the retreat.

 The site should be approve by the government and have certificate to do the

construction.

 The site should be secured so it won’t attract locals and burglars to the retreat.

 A site that near to the water supplies.

STRATEGIES:

6.1 Site

1. A site that is protect from natural disaster, safe from burglars or criminals, far from

noise and odor and less expense to build on.

2. The site should have certain advantage such as views, vegetation and topography.

6.3 Orientation

1. The bedroom should face the qiblat.

2. Longer walls at the north and shorter at the east to get enough daylight while avoiding
much sunlight.
