Re: Assignment No. 4 (FLYWHEELS, CLUTCHES AND BRAKES)
To be submitted on October 5 on or before 5 pm Buceng.
1. Write your name, year and section, and the DATE. (No date have less 5% deduction)
2. Rewrite the problem and drawing first before the given, required and solution/drawing. Do not
split the given problems. Strictly no erasures. (No given and required are less 5% each).
3. List your final answer in order (a – b – c – d) if applicable or box or identify you answer. Not in
proper order is wrong.
4. No shortcuts. Solution and answer must be of the same systems of units.
5. Use Yellow pad only.
6. Students not in the list are zero.

PROBLEM NO. 1
A punch press is fitted with a flywheel capable of furnishing (A) N-m of energy during quarter of a
revolution near the bottom dead centre while blanking a hole on sheet metal. The maximum speed of
the flywheel during the operation is (B) r.p.m. and the speed decreases by (C)% during the cutting
stroke. The mean radius of the rim is (D) mm. Calculate the approximate mass of the flywheel rim
assuming that it contributes (E)% of the energy requirements.

PROBLEM NO. 2
A multiple-disk clutch with three disks on one shaft and two on the other, similar to that in Fig. 18.11,
Text, is rated at (A) hp at (B) rpm. (a) What is the largest value of Di if f and p are given by Table AT 29
for asbestos in resin binder and Do = (C) in. (b) For the diameter used of Di = (D) in., what is the required
axial force and the average pressure?

PROBLEM NO. 3
A pivoted-shoe brake, rated at (A) ft-lb. torque, is shown. There are (B) sq. in. of braking surface; woven
asbestos lining; (C) rpm of the wheel; 90o arc of brake contact on each shoe. The effect of spring A is
negligible. (a) Is the pin for the shoe located at the center of pressure? (b) How does the maximum
pressure compare with that in Table AT 29? (c) What load W produces the rated torque? (d) At what
rate is energy absorbed? Express in horsepower. Is it likely that this brake can operate continuously
without overheating? Make Free Body Diagram (No copy paste).
