More monitoring OR…
less handling?
HICE – MCS

MCS-basis / philosophy:
1. Solution for complete power cable handling-cycle,
minimising cable handling

2. Power cables best handled on rotating equipment

3. Focus on OWF infield & transmission power cables

HICE – MCS

1. Power cable handling cycle

A. best scenario = minimum of operations involving cable

• Load – lay – offload
• Requires CLV to load cable(s) directly

B. common scenario = more operations involving cable

• Load – offload – load – lay – offload
• Cable transport by cargo vessel / barge
• Coiling of cables

RISKS:
Bending cycles Reliability
Torque build-up (coiling) Liability / Warranty
Over bending/pulling
Damage to product

2. Power cables best handled on rotating equipment

Cable transport & installation:

• Carousel
• Installation vessel used for transport and installation
• No torque (0x) induced in cable
• large capacity

• Static tank (coiling)

1. Installation vessel used for transport & installation
• 1x loading = 1x torque, 1x lay (unloading) = 1x un-torque
2. vessel used for transport and separate vessel for installation
• 2x loading = 2x torque, 1x unloading & lay = 2x un-torque

• Drop height (0.9 x OD) and coil size limitations

• Reels
• Suitable vessel & RHDS required
• Suitability for laying power cables
• Limited capacity (appr. 300t.)
HICE – MCS

3. Focus on OWF infield & transmission

HICE – MCS

1. HICE – MCS / Basic Concept

HICE has developed a concept for cable transport, storage, installation and
maintenance & repair in a growing subsea cable market relating to any subsea
power cable application up to 300t. product weight.

The core of the concept is to minimize handling of the cable from source (cable
manufacturer) to application (offshore installation). The main purpose of the
concept is minimising any risk to the cable by only handling the cable when
neccessary. Cable will be stored in an ‘assigned‘ basket, compatible with the
MCS-components throughout the various stages between production and final
installation.

The starting point for the concept is the best way to handle a subsea power
cable is to store it in a rotating basket and dismissing static coils, vertical reels
and other methods that are a compromise and will always pose a risk to
powercables

The MCS consists of small equipment-modules which can be easily transported

in standard offshore container‘s and assembled on site.

Cable can easily be transported to required location. It is not neccessary the

cable installation vessel loads the cable at the manufacturer or storage location,
the cable comes to the installation vessel

HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications

3.1 Factory cable storage / load-out

3.2 Contractor installation projects

3.3 Owner cable storage

3.4 Emergency response / Cable repair concept

3.5 Decommissioning?
HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.1 Factory cable storage / load-out

• Cables can be stored in baskets and loaded as per project
requirements (temporary storage)
• Cables do not occupy factory carousels
HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.2 Contractor installation projects

• Transport of baskets can be undertaken by ‘any’ vessel
• If required cables can be transferred from baskets to CLV in mob-
port (after transport)
• Flexibility in project execution / schedule changes
• MCS can be mobilised to vessel of choice for installation
HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.3 Owner cable storage

• Existing solutions

Tennet Eemshaven / Emden: 50-Hertz Transmission :

HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.3 Owner cable storage

• Cable remaining from project(s) can be centrally stored for future
purposes
• No large equipment (CAPEX) required for storage
HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.4 Emergency Response / Cable repair concept

• MCS (+ owned equipment) = repair facility

• equipment containerised for road/sea transport to location

/ vessel / mob port

• Vessel availability / local market

HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.4 Emergency Response /

Jointless / Replacement set-up:

• inner array cables

• Deeper waters
• Smaller cable length/capacity
• Jointing viable?

• complete recovery existing cable

HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.4 Emergency Response /

‘Mid Line Joint’ set-up:

• export/transmission cables
• rel. shallow waters
• increased cable length/capacity
• longer jointing duration
• installation methods
• vessel-type depending on waterdepth
• shallow draft = light equipment
HICE – MCS

3. HICE – MCS / Applications:

3.5 Decommissioning scopes?

“cables can be left in-situ IF buried over 1m, else required to be

recovered or buried to depth”
HICE – MCS

4. HICE – MCS / Advantages:

• Minimized risk of cable damage due to minimum cable handling
operations.

• No ‘un-defined’ torque in the cable due to coiling (memory-effect)

• No fixed turntable needed for initial, temporary and final storage

• No installation vessel required for load-out / transport

• Minimized load-out and mobilisation durations (lifting of baskets only),

reduced vessel time

• Integrated system of components that can also be used individually

• Modular and transportable repair facility, all equipment can be

containerised for road/sea transport
HICE – MCS

5. HICE – MCS / Cost effective solution (CAPEX / OPEX)

• Lower CAPEX due to reduced size and capacity requirement of modular

and multi-functional equipment

• ‘container’ / basket is project specific in dimension and number required,

CAPEX can be allocated to project budget(s)

• Equipment can be built to DNV-GL certification for offshore use, utilising

standardised hydraulic and electrical components

• Due to standardised and interchangeable components, less spares

required (OPEX)

• Low maintenance requirement by design (OPEX)

• Storage-solution as added service to Client
