Movie Night Lesson Plan

Title: Wonder
Date: 12/ 04/ 2018
Theme: Kindness/ Courage/ Family/ Friendships/ Bullying
Storyline: Wonder is a touching and inspiring movie about Auggie Pullman who wants to be a
normal ordinary boy entering fifth grade, but he has a facial deformity that most people find
repulsive. The movie relates Auggie’s first year of school from the perspective of many different
characters. He experiences both bullying and random acts of kindness. The story is an eye-
opening account that helps the viewer understand what it is like to be different, to experience
bullying, and to persevere. Wonder is a great tool in the fight against bullying.

group activity and reflections.

WARM-UP:
Read the movie quotes, ask students to silently read along. Then allow students time to discuss as
groups what the quotes mean to them.
PRE-TASK:
1. New Vocabulary should be previously explained in class. (At least a week prior).
o Categorize words (verbs, nouns, idioms, ... etc.)
o Set a limit on number of words (20-30)
o Choose words that relate to the gist of the movie.
2. When the teacher starts the movie night, students should be grouped from different
levels.
3. Explain to students that the movie has English subtitles and that the movie will be paused
2 to discuss new vocabulary and ask questions about previous segment.
4. Allow students a few minutes to read through first the group of questions.
5. Students should be asked to pay attention to the list of words as they watch to connect the
meanings to the words in context. They should read the questions to find answers as they
actively watch.
6. Stop the movie only once half way (minute 59). Have groups of students answer
questions 1-6. (This will give them a chance to speak). Discuss answers as a group.
7. Repeat #5 & #6 when the movie ends, answering questions 7-12.

TEACHING TASK:
• Read the vocabulary and questions.
• Pause movie and discuss vocabulary and questions.
• Students will participate by answering questions and discussing inspirational parts.

FOLLOW-UP:
Ask students about the challenges the protagonist faces, the major decisions he/she has to make,
and the moral of the movie.
BACK-UP TASK:
If there is extra time, ask students to share their best inspirational quotes from the movie and/or
their favorite scene/s. They should be encouraged to share why/how these quotes influenced
them. If there is no extra time, this should be discussed in class.
FEEDBACK:
1. Either group discussion video or individual video.
2. Voice notes.
3. Written form with all trainees’ feedback.
