DISSECTED from 2002 contains ten interpretations of songs

from the albums Thirteen Masks (1991), Anhedoniac (1998)

and Disburden Disciple (2000) by various remixers. These
are not strictly remixes, however, as most tracks received
added production. An acoustic version of an original and a
live duet round off the collection.

1
Jarboe’s originals range from post-modern chamber music to psycho-funk and trip-
hop. Displaying a spectrum of genres and styles, the remixes are finely crafted,
innovative and multidimensional pieces of music. After sixteen years, these sonic
gems confirm the talent and the commitment of the dissectors and Jarboe.

2
The remixer Thread gives ‘Dear 666’ – an experimental track on Disburden Disciple –
a buoyantly percussive treatment on ‘Dear 666 (Sexpartite),’ while Lustmord’s
rework of same, titled ‘Nature of the Beast,’ is an ambient piece with funky rhythms
and moaning drones.

Anhedoniac’s ‘I’m A Killer’, reworked to ‘Killer (Dusted Angel Mix)’ by PCP, preserves
the extremes of the original in harsh industrial beats. Lustmord’s transformation of
same, ‘The Inner Geometry of Murder (Medieval Dub),’ is long, atmospheric and
elaborate.

3
Bildeaux & Boane’s Resuscitation Mix of ‘Kiss Of Life’s a tuneful gem of dreamy
psychedelia and pop appeal. A tinkling of bells opens the track and recurs
throughout this melodious midtempo piece which is delicately delivered amid static
crackle, symphonic synths and percussive electronica. Whispers and fragments of
vocals float on the rolling rhythms.

4
The acoustic version of ‘Kiss Of Life’ (not a remix), is a melancholy work for organ
and voice. It opens with the recital of a rite of remembrance. Jarboe’s singing voices
harmonize with one another over keyboards and solemn organ lines while the
sounds of inhalation and wailing appear momentarily. The lengthy instrumental coda
unfolds with elements of dissonance for an atmospheric finish.

The remixer Burnt Media’s hypnotic ‘Gun (Mosquito)’, pulsates with simple patterns
of melody and rhythm in the eurodisco style of Giorgio Moroder; this is a leaner mix
of ‘I Got a Gun’ on Thirteen Masks.

5
A sombre gem is Bildeaux & Boane’s darkly atmospheric ‘Trepanation’ which opens
with Jarboe’s haunting chorale, followed by a brooding electronic ambiance with
random bursts of fuzz and twitters over shuffling percussion. Simultaneously sinister
and mournful, Trepanation is one weird ensemble of sounds.

Remixer Jean Marmiesse’s ‘2:38 (Excerpt)’ of deep space atmospherics blends

angelic humming and gentle synths with thousands of fervently ticking clocks,
creating vistas of time, space, depth and distances.

6
‘Hypo Segue’ by Ennui Chicago is a less abrasive and more effect-laden version of
‘Hypogirl’ on the 1996 Swans album Soundtracks for the Blind.

Concluding with ‘Live Killer,’ a duet by Jarboe and Joseph Budenholzer of

Backworld, Dissected offers engaging transformations of Jarboe’s 1990s work and is
a must for fans.
