Derbyshire police say they are com-
mitted to reversing the “worrying
trend” of violent crime after latest fig-
ures show an 11% increase.
The rise has been revealed as the city
reels from the shocking death of
100-year-old Zofija Kaczan following
an alleged mugging in Normanton and
as police continue to investigate a stab-
bing in Derby city centre in the early
hours of yesterday morning.
According to police statistics, there
were 787 more violent crimes resulting
in injuries in the county from April 1,
2017, to 31 March, 2018, compared to
the previous year. Since the beginning of
April, other incidents include a man
being seriously injured on Monday in an
Ilkeston street attack, two men injured
following an alleged brawl in Derby on
Sunday and a stabbing in a Normanton
street on May 30.
The previous week there was an
alleged knife attack on an 18-year-old
in Friar Gate and a man was charged
with attempted murder following a
shooting in Derby at the end of April.
In response to the new figures, Super-
intendent Tracy Harrison, who is in
charge of operational policing in the
south of the county, said: “Derby, like a
lot of urban areas across the country,
has seen a recent rise in knife crime
and violent crimes such as robbery.
“We are committed to reversing this
worrying trend and we are working
hard alongside our partners to tackle it.
“We know that the rise in knife crime
is predominantly caused by young men
who are increasingly carrying knives as
a matter of course and then using them
to commit crime. We are working to
change this mind-set – people who
carry knives often have them used
against them.”
She said the force was continuing
with Project Zao, an initiative aimed to
discourage young people from carrying
knives and targeting those that do,
using messages from people previ-
ously involved in gang culture, doctors
who have to deal with knife wounds
and families of victims still dealing
with the aftermath of their loved ones
being victims of knife crime.
Police have also targeted retailers in
the city to ensure they do not sell
knives to youngsters.
Superintendent Harrison said: “Our
message to young people in Derby is
clear: knives kill and should not be
carried. If you do carry a knife, we will
catch you and you will face the full
legal consequences.
“If you know someone who carries a
knife, please pass that information to
us or Crimestoppers so we can take
steps to prevent future tragedies from
happening.”
