Vise jig, Solid jig, Post jig, Angle plate jig and Angular post jig.

What is the main element of a jig?

Jig Body.

What is meant by jig body?

The jig body supports the workpiece and has locating and clamping elements in it. It is
provided with 4 jig feet and rests on the machine table.

What are the uses of jig feet?

It supports the entire jig body. A jig feet is not bolted to the machine table. Jig is provided with 4 jig
feet, instead of entire bottom surface lying flat on the machine table, thus saving in material.

Where the jig feet are provided?

The jig feet are provided at the bottom of the jig.

State the purpose of the jig plate?

A jig plate carries the drill bush for guiding the tools.

Why the locators are necessary in jigs?

Locators are used to rest the workpiece in proper position of the jig.
State the use of clamps?
Clamps are used to hold the workpiece firmly against all disturbing forces occurred by machining
operations.

What is jig bush? 0r What is a drill bush? or

What is the use of drill bush? or What is the need of drill bush?
Drill bushes are used to guide drills, reamers and other cutting tools into the proper position on the
workpiece.

Illustrate a drill bush used for light clamping.

List the types of drill bushes.

1) Press fit bushes
- Headless or plain bus
- Headed or flanged bush
- Headed collared press fit bush
2) Renewable bushes
-Fixed bushes
-Slip bushes
3) Liner bushes
4) Threaded bushes
5) Screw or clamping bush

What are the two types of press fit bushes?

1 .Plain or headless bushes. 2. Flanged or headed bushes.

When will press fit bushes or fixed bushes be used?

These types of bushings are used when little importance is put on accuracy or finish.

What is the advantage of headed bush over a headless drill bush?

Headed bushes are more preferable than headless bushes because the collar provides positive
stop against the jig plate.

What is meant by drill walking?

In case of long drill the drill may wander if not guided properly with long bushes. This is
known as ‘drill walking’.

What is slip bush?

Slip bushes are knurled in its head for easy removal. Slip bushes are interchangeable in a given size
of liner. Slip bushes can be used when the component is still in the jig for reaming operation there by
providing more accuracy.

When slip bushes are used?

Slip bushes are mainly used when a hole in the workpiece requires two operations.
Examples: performing both drilling and reaming in a same jig plate.
Where can we use the renewable bush?
These bushes are generally used for continuous or for large batch productions. These bushes
are used in liner bushings which are installed in the jig plate.

What is an extended drill bush used? Illustrate.

In case of long or deep hole drilling, the drill may wander if not guided properly. In this cases
extended drill bushes can be used to guide the drill.

What are the materials used for making drill bushes?

1. Tool steel. 2. Water hardening carbon steel.

Specify the condition of using plain and flanged bushes in jigs?

Plain bushes: These are mainly used when the free surface is required on the top of the jig plate.
Flanged bushes: It is employed when the jig plate into which it is installed in thin.

State the purpose of providing liner in renewable bushes?

Liner is used to provide hardened and wear resistant mating surfaces.

How the rotation and movement of bush can be prevented?

By providing set screws the bushes are retained with the jig plate.

Why the threaded bushes are used in jig plate?

Threaded or screwed bushes are used to hold the bush in place as well as to make the bush
adjustable.

Liner bushes are known as -------------.

Master bushes.

How liner bushes are used?

Liner bushes are always used in conjunction with a renewable or slip bushes.

Tell the other names of special bushes?

Non standard bushes.

What are the different types of jigs?

1.Plate jigs 2. Latch or leaf jigs 3. Channel jigs 4. Pot jigs
5. Box jigs 6. Angle plate 7. Turnover jig

State the provision made on latch or leaf jig?

Leaf plate is capable of swinging about a fulcrum point so that it can open or close the load or
unload the workpiece.

What are the disadvantages of leaf jigs?

1. Clips may accumulate inside and cause trouble unless provision is made for them.
2. Drill bushings are fitting in the leaf, play in provided and may affect accuracy.

State the materials used for fabricating channel jigs?

1. Cast iron. 2. Mild steel plates.
When will box jigs be used?
When holes are to be drilled in more than one face of the workpiece.

What are the operations that can be performed using post jigs?
1. Drilling. 2. Reaming.

State the provision made on angular post jig to drill run and removal of the workpiece ?
The drill bushes are extended and shaped.

What is the main advantage of turnover jig?

Workpieces having no suitable resting surface can be drilled conveniently with turn over jigs.

What are the two important parts of pot jigs?

1. Pot or bottom part. 2. Bush or jig plate.

When will solid jigs be more suitable?

It is a very simple form of jig used for drilling holes in articles of simpler shapes and relatively smaller
sizes.

At what condition the turnnion jigs are used?

When a large, heavy workpiece are to be drilled from a number of sides so that the faces requiring
drilling operations can be easily turned and positioned.

What is the use of indexing jig?

Indexing jigs are used to drill series of holes in a circle on the face of a workpiece.

How can we identify universal jigs?

Universal jigs are those having either adjustable or adaptable with more than one drilling jobs.

How automatic drill jigs differ from other jigs?

All the functions of jigs are performed automatically without any manual adjustment.

What are the various possibilities to operate automatic drill jigs?

1. Mechanical 2. Pneumatic or air operated
3. Hydraulic operated. 4. Pneumo- hydraulic.

What is the purpose of plate jig.

Plate jigs are employed to drill holes on large parts maintaining accurate spacing with each
other.

What are the disadvantages of plate jig.

Only one surface can be drilled at one loading and drilling forces are generally directed
toward the clamping device. Therefore the clamping device must be rigid enough to
withstand drilling fonutrces.
Explain Vice jig.
They are used for low volume and short production runs but may be used for long production
runs of simple parts.

Which is the most basic form of closed jigs?

Box shape

Name the main components of an air operated drill jig.

Cylindrical body, air cylinder, lock nut, jig plate, locator, pressure pad and air connections.

List the advantages air operated jig.

Compressed air forms the convenient medium for supplying force necessary to operate the
clamping devices.
It is faster to operate and cheap

Name a jig suitable to make hole at an angle

Angular post jig

What is meant by angle plate jig?

 They are primarily used to machine parts that cannot be easily machined with plate-
type tooling.
 Sizes can be varied according to the size of the workpiece.
 Because of their design, they can accommodate parts of various shapes.
 Designed to drill holes perpendicular to the location surface or at an angle other than
90

Why is the side of the V-block locator’s face inclined inwards?

To accommodate circular jobs.

Draw a spherical washer arrangement and explain it use?

Spherical washers along with T-bolts and clamp straps are used to clamping the fixture down
to machine table.
