1.1 INTRODUCTION

One of the most important and crucial factor in planning and construction of a multi-story
building is the cost and economy of the building, whether it is a bungalow or multi-story
apartment building, economy is always the number one consideration for the owner or the
shareholders. Till date no such tool is available to portend the total cost in a more rational
way, the only available solution for the industry is experience of a few engineers who have
worked on remotely similar projects.

This study will allow the industries to estimate the total cost in a more rational way, also from
the graphs that will be developed from this study, one can estimate the change in the probable
cost for different variation in story height and for different shapes of a building.

Interpolations from the results obtained from this study will be endless since one can use
these results to interpret many different aspects about the cost of the project.

1.2 Objectives

The following are the objectives of the study:

 To perform Analysis and design on the selected parameters.

 To find total consumption for individual structural elements and also for the entire
building.
 Result analysis towards understanding the variation in material consumption with
variation in different parameters.

1.3 Scope

The scope of this study is as follows:

 Design of the structures is as per recommendations in Indian Standard practices.
 The material consumption is calculated only for the superstructure of the buildings.
 Material consumption is calculated only for the skeleton (frame) of the building.
 Only ordinary moment resisting frame structures are considered for the purpose of this
study.
 Concrete grade of M30 is invariably used in all structural elements.
 Steel grade of Fe415 is used for shear reinforcement and Fe 500 is used for the
longitudinal reinforcement but the material consumption is calculated altogether since rate
is not varying much.
 Six realistic residential building plans are chosen from Pune city.
 Type of brick considered for calculating SDL on beams are as per IS Code Class A bricks.
 Different variations of the geometry of the buildings are used. The elevations range from
G+5 to G+25. The dimensions for the following elements are kept the same in all the
buildings:
a. Walls: 230mm (External/Internal)
b. Floor to floor height: 3 meters.
c. Parapet wall of 1 meter.

1.4 Significance

Till date there is no rational tool available in the market to portend the probable material
consumption of a building. There has always been a need to know the variation of material
consumption with respect to change in geometric parameters of a building.

There is also a need to compare material consumption for buildings with different plan areas
and heights in order to fix the number of stories and shape of the building.

This study will provide the industry with a tool that can be used to estimate the total material
consumption of building with respect to different parameters such as height and shape of the
building.
