How to Partition and Un-Partition a Hard Drive

In this easy-to-follow video, I show you how to partition, and un-partition a hard disk drive, using
Windows 7. This process also works with Windows Vista as well, but does not work with
Windows XP and below. Thanks for watching!

when i clicked delete volume, instead of saying unallocated it say's free space and the extend
volume option in "c drive" is un-clickable, so what do i do to extand my "c drive".
1
Jo Dic
Jo Dic
hey there, i'm not sure if this will help but try right-clicking that free space and then delete
partition. That would change it into unallocated space which is the way to merge it back on your
main drive, if i'm not mistaken. I can't reconfirm it for you since my partition is also full, and i
dun wanna delete my files. Those are as far as I can remember. I hope that would help you.

Right-click the Free space and it should say "Delete Partition" click that. And it SHOULD become
Unallocated

Now the Extend Volume option should be clickable on the C drive

+Ulices Q thanks man. Your solution worked. My extended partition was showing in green and I
wasn't able to extend. So I went ahead and deleted the partition after deleting volume. The
space became unallocated and I could merge the same.

I know I'm REALLY late to this but a 1TB hard drive does not actually have 1000 Gigabytes. It's
actually 972. So if you were to try to make a partition of 900 gb and another of 100, that's why it
won't work.

so dude im trying un-partition my 2 drive (c)&(d). so, i am using windows 8.1 since there was
something onto my other drive (d) i tried shrinking just the right amount so the data inside the
drive (d) wont get deleted but then my other drive (c) which i think is the main drive, won't
extend its volume?? even though theres already like 600 gb unallocated do you know why is
that???

Hi, I have a question. I was able to follow every instruction, but I am trying to add the
unallocated GB's to my C drive. But for some reason it will not allow me to do this. My C drive
only has 80GBs of space and I really need to fix this because it is messing up my ability to do my
homework and even the functionality of my computer in general. What do I do? It won't let me
extend my C drive.

You can only partition and un-partition on one physical drive. Partitions are just virtual drives on
a physical drive, so you can't un-partition two partitions of ttwo different physical drives.

Vince -- Your video saved me! Although the steps were slightly different than my Toshiba/Win 7,
I was able to unpartition my HDD which the computer store set-up. I took a leap of faith to
"delete" when the instructions said would the space would become "unusable", but after i click
on delete, I was then able to extend the c: partition to the full drive.. Thanks for your help!

Ok, you will need to right click on your "free space" and then click "delete the Extended
partition". Then it will say "unallocated" which will allow you to extend your C drive.

Keep going until it tells you the software isnt free and asks you if you want to buy now or later or
somethin like that, screw that part and cancel/ exit. Go back to the disk management thing like
this youtube video shows you, and you'll see it is now "unallocated". Then uninstall that
software if you want. You might have already solved your issue but im just mentioning this if you
havent
TheCuntBubble
TheCuntBubble
It wont let me paste a link here, so just google "Isfans blog free space to unallocated" and it
should be the top link. Anyways, the software is of small size, and when it finishes open the
software. There will be 2 options, "I just want to extend my partition" and "i want to select the
following partition to extend". I chose the second one. After that you'll hit next a couple times
then having the option to how much to extend your hard drive.
TheCuntBubble
TheCuntBubble
Are you still having that problem? i had the same damn issue. I know it sound stupid to tell you
to download somethin so just take my word for it. Its not bullshit. In that page it'll tell you to
download somethin. CLick that red underlined link. It'll download "Extend-Partition 2010" It
really costs to actually extend but it does change your green thing to "unallocated" for free

It goes green and says "free space" rather than "unallocated". When right-clicking on the D drive
at that point I can choose to "delete partition" rather than delete volume like before. I have not
tried this yet, since I don't want to experiment. Also, I cannot choose "extend" on my C drive to
include the free discspace in the D drive. All I can do with C is shrink it. I'd love some help here.
Katapraktoi

So I'm trying this, but it doesn't work the way you're showing.
I have 2 discs, disc 0 and disc 1. Disc 1 is an external and I don't want to touch that. Disc 0 has an
unidentified 25gb partition [dark blue], a C drive with Windows [dark blue] and a D drive [light
blue]. I want to include the D drive into the C drive, and then make a new D drive which is bigger.

Whenever I click delete volume on the D drive it doesn't go black like in your video.

@mattz133769 I did figure it out. Right click the part that says "Free Space" and click "Delete
Partition" (I think it says that, it's been a month). If it doesn't say that, look for something that
seems similar. You pretty much just need to delete it again for it to say "Unallocated". Hope that
helps.

interest in Windows from lazy user to full blown AVID LEARNER. I'm certain with a lot more
time, I'll eventually graduate to true "Windows Scholar" level.....LOL.

very good video! i have 2 questions though:

1) When i made the partition and allocated it, it automatically made itself a logical drive instead
of a primary partition. I googled this and apparently it needs to be primary for it to boot another
operating system. how come mine is logical and how do i make it primary?

and 2) after deleting volume, it turns green with 'Free Space' instead of black and 'Unallocated'
and because of this i cant extend it back to my C drive..am i doing somthing wrong?

a partition is basically a division of your hard drive. you can't install an operating system or store
data on your drive unless it is partition. if you bought a stock computer (i.e dell, hp, etc.) then it
is likely that your drive is already partitioned and ready to go. repartitioning your drive is only
necessary if you are installing another operating system onto your drive.
