End of Salutary Neglect (around February, 1763)

-Great Britain was done “ignoring” the colonies. This is the point in time when we start to see heavy British presence in the colonies and everything starts to go on
lock down.

Proclamation of 1763 (October, 1763)


-The Proclamation of 1763 was a document issued by King George III of England. This document told all colonists not to expand their territory west of the
Mississippi River to avoid confrontation with the Natives. This was made to calm the native population.

Start of the Intolerable Acts (March, 1764)


-The Intolerable Acts were a series of crucial acts put in by the British. The first part was the closing of the Boston Port, second was the Quartering Act, the third
act took away Massachusetts government, and the fourth act was the Justice Act which let off British officials if they committed crimes in the 13 colonies.

Sugar Act (April, 1764)


-The Sugar Act aimed to stop all smuggling of sugar and molasses. This was believed to be set in by the British to make up for debts brought on by the French and
Indian War.

Stamp Act (March, 1765)


-This act imposed a tax on all documents that colonists used. This affected everyone from merchants, business people, and colonists who liked to read the
newspaper.

Quartering Act (March, 1765)


-This act forced colonists to provide British soldiers shelter and food. The colonists were selected randomly and were legally obligated to follow this order.

Townshend Acts (June, 1767)


-This act did a lot of things. It first changed the government systems that the 13 colonies were used to. Next, it punished New York for not following the Quartering
Act.

Boston Massacre (March, 1773)


-British soldiers open fired on a mob of people who were throwing things at them and “protesting”. 5 people ended up killed.

Tea Act (May, 1773)


-One of the motives for the Tea Act of 1773 was that the East India Company was struggling financially so the British raised prices through mandatory taxes. This
taxed the colonists favorite beverage and caused an uproar.

Boston Tea Party (December, 1773)


-The Boston Tea Party was a political stunt performed by the Sons of Liberty who boarded a ship in the Boston Harbour and proceeded to dump 46 tons of tea into
the harbour to protest the Tea Act.

Lexington and Concord (April, 1775)


-Aka. The Shot Heard around the World. Paul Revere conducted his famous ride to warn others of the British arrival, the colonists militia and the British army met at
the towns of Lexington and Concord and shot the first round of the American Revolution.

Battle of Bunker Hill (June, 1775)


-Actually fought mostly on Breed’s Hill, this battle resulted in a British victory, but marked the first major battle on the American Revolution timeline.

Battle of Quebec (December, 1775)


-This battle fought close to the modern providence of Quebec resulted in a sweep of the Patriots by the British. This battle lowered morale on the Americans end.

Thomas Paine’s Common Sense published (January, 1776)


-This “pamphlet” written by Thomas Paine was advocating for independence. This document was credited to uniting ordinary citizens to fight for their freedom.

Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge (February, 1776)


-This battle was fought between the patriots and the poorly armed southern loyalists, this victory for the Americans was a huge morale booster.

Battle of New York (August, 1776)


-This was the first major battle taken place after the Americans declared independence in July. The British, again, won the largest battle of the entire war.

Battle of Trenton (December, 1776)


-George Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware river to surprise attack the Hessian army is renown by the famous painting of him crossing the river. This
“fight” was small but very pivotal

Battle of Saratoga (August/October, 1777)
-The Americans narrowly won this battle, marking the climax of the war. They caught the British as the retreated for Saratoga.

Valley Forge (December, 1777)


-After the British took Philadelphia, Washington led his army to valley forge, morale was very low and this point due to the weather conditions and Washington lost
lots of soldiers due to the cold.

Battle of Charleston (March, 1780)


-This battle was a major loss to the Patriots, not only did they suffer a loss of the battle but they also lost the city of Charleston to the British. Things were not
looking good for the Americans.

Battle of Kings Mountain (October, 1780)


-This conflict was fought between the Patriots and southern loyalists. This resulted in an American victory. It took place in North Carolina.

Battle of Cowpens (January, 1781)


-The Battle of Cowpens was one of the first major battles that the Patriots won over the British. It was fought in South Carolina and the Americans only suffered 149
casualties.

Battle of Guilford Courthouse (March, 1781)


-The British pulled the upset win over the Americans in this battle. With two times the number of soldiers, the Americans unfortunately lost the battle.

Battle of Yorktown (October, 1781)


-This marked the last battle of the American Revolution, Lord Cornwallis surrendered to the Americans in Yorktown, New York, marking the patriots victory of the
war and their overall independence.

Treaty of Paris (September, 1783)


-This document ultimately ended the Revolutionary War. This treaty set boundaries for the Americans and gave them their independence from Great Britain.
