Standard English

Standard English developed out of the English dialects in and around London,
Oxford and Cambridge.

Reasons:

London was the place of the

royal court. The language of the
upper class is generally
considered the standard. London
was the place where the royal
family, nobles, and the rich
merchants lived. So, Standard
English developed around here.
Oxford and Cambridge were the cities that were the seat of two famous universities.
So, the educated people there learned and spoke Standard English.

Cambridge University

It is that variety of English that is used in print, and that is taught in schools and
universities. It is also taught to non-native speakers learning the language. It is
normally used by educated people and is used in news broadcast.

The accent used along with Standard English is called RP (Received Pronunciation),
BBC English, and Oxford English (The other names are King’s English and Queen’s
English). Usually, Standard English is considered superior to other regional dialects
of English. Therefore, it is called a superposed variety of language.
