1.1 System Design Parameter

1.1.1 Design Period

Sewerage System will be designed for 30 year design period as mentioned in
CPHEEO Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment Systems, Clause 2.5 Table 2.1
Pg. 2-9. The design period considered for project is presented in Table 1.

1.1.2 Population

Population details are taken from ECCI Zone 1 hydraulic design.

1.1.3 Design Flows

Design flows are essentially peak dry weather flow. Peak dry weather flows would
comprise peak domestic sewage flow plus infiltration. Sewage generation would be
considered as 80% of the domestic water consumption and infiltration is considered as
250 lit/manhole/day.

Per Capita Water Supply – 135 lpcd

Sewage generation – 135 x 0.8 = 108 lpcd

Infiltration - 250 lit/manhole/day

1.1.4 Design Formula

Manning’s formula will be employed for design of gravity sewers

Where,

V – Velocity of the flow, in m/s

n – Manning’s roughness coefficient

R – Hydraulic radius in m = A / P; (A is Area & P is Wetted Perimeter)

S – Slope of Hydraulic gradient (1 in S)

1.1.5 Peak Factors

Peak factors will be considered with respect to contributing population, as per
CPHEEO Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment, Clause 3.5 Table 3.2 pg. 3-3.
The peak factors are furnished in .

1.1.6 Pipe Material

As per Contract, Minimum Diameter and Material of Sewer is 150mm & RCC NP3
pipes manufactured using Sulphate Resistant Cement will be used. The manning’s co-
efficient for RCC NP3 pipe is 0.011. Pipe Material Details are presented in Table 3.

1.1.7 Velocity
To avoid the deposition of suspended solids, the following minimum self-cleaning
velocity will be maintained as per CPHEEO Manual on Sewerage and Sewage
Treatment, Clause 3.15.1 Pg. 3-26. However, upstream sewers may not meet
minimum velocity criteria because of very low flow contributions unless the sewers are
made very steep, which results in the whole sewer networks on downstream side very
deep for excavation. Minimum and maximum velocity for different flow presented in
Table 4.

Table 4: Minimum and Maximum Velocity

Condition Minimum Value

Minimum Velocity at Initial Peak flow 0.60 m/s

Minimum Velocity at Ultimate Peak flow 0.8 m/s

Maximum Velocity 3 m/s

1.1.8 Design Capacity of Sewers

Sewers are designed partially full to carry estimated peak flows generated in the
design year. This is to ensure proper ventilation and to prevent septicity of the sewage.
For hydraulic design of sewers, it is ensured that depth of flow in the sewers (d) does
not exceed 0.8 times the pipe diameter (D) i.e., d/D<=0.8. (Reference: CPHEEO
Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment, Clause 3.15.5, Pg. 3-28.

1.1.9 Depth of Cover

As per design criteria given in Schedule-D Clause 7.2.5, to facilitate house connection
to the manholes of main sewer and to provide protection to sewers from external loads,
the minimum cover of 1.00 m is provided to the crown of pipe.

1.1.10 Minimum Size of Sewers And Gradient

The gravity sewers are of minimum 150mm diameter as per Schedule-B Table 1.1. The
gradients adopted for the sewers are generally in line with recommendations given in
the CPHEEO manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment, Clause 3.15.6, Table 3.13
Pg. 3-31. The minimum gradient of sewer would be generally as per design

requirement to fulfill the velocity criteria. Table 4 represents the Minimum slopes to be
considered for sanitary sewers.

1.1.11 Bedding for Sewers

The type of bedding (Granular Bedding, Plain Cement Concrete, and Reinforced
Cement Concrete) depends on the weight of soil above the pipe based on width of
trench, depth at which the sewer pipe is laid and the class of superimposed load
considered based on the traffic condition.

1.1.12 Manholes
The circular manholes will be proposed at all the junctions, change of diameters, and
change in pipe gradients and on straight run of sewer at 30m interval for all diameters.

The sizes of manholes adopted is in line with the recommendations of CPHEEO

Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment and Tender Documents. The size of
manholes are presented in Table 6.

Drop manholes are proposed where the difference between invert level of lateral /
branch sewer and maximum water level (at design peak flows) of main sewer is more
than 600mm
