Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural Management) The Human Touch

Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar

thehumantouch
In an ever expanding universe, where every
moment defines a dynamic change, we are
united by only one humane attribute…
A human touch that transforms the very world
we live in.

Now, imagine a world bereft of such humane

connections—it would be like life without
a soul, a rose devoid of its fragrance, a bird
without its wings.

The economic boom has given resurgence to

myriad sectors in the industry. Finely skilled
professionals are ready to rule the roost. But
little do they know that apart from technical
know-how, there lies something more.
Something that’s not teachable by tomes of
management books. Something that’s known as
–the human touch that every scholar in
XIMB Rural Management Programme is imbibed
with. So come, feel their magic of , as
they open up new windows to a hugely insular
corporate world with their human touch.

Director’s Message
It is my pleasure and privilege to place before you the placement
brochure for the year 2008-09 for the Post Graduate Diploma in
Management (Rural Management) programme of XIMB.

Mahatma Gandhi said that India lives in the villages. But, there are very
few people who are skilled and willing to undertake the development
of these villages in the rural areas of India. There are 47.23 million
households below the poverty line in India. The majority of these
households are again in the rural areas of India. The basic facilities
such as clean drinking water, electricity, education and health facilities
are scarce. At XIMB we understand the need for “change agents”,
skilled professionals, who are dedicated and educated to undertake the
development of rural India.

The rural management programme of XIMB has been the crucible which
has churned bright young students into responsible and capable rural
managers. The rural managers educated from XIMB have brought about
rural interventions to improve the livelihood support system of the
marginalized, used microfinance as an effective mechanism to ignite
the potential of entrepreneurship in the villages, harnessed the potential
for rural growth and ensured empowerment and emancipation to the
weaker sections of the society.

When you interact with our PGDM (RM) students; you will be touched
by their commitment and dedication and above all a burning desire to
contribute meaningfully to the process of nation building of India.

I welcome you to XIMB - to experience the academic environment, our

world class facilities, academic resources and the spirit of “excellence
and perfection” epitomized at XIMB.

Fr. P.T. Joseph, S.J.

Traditionally, industry has been the main focus of management science.

Rural Management Xavier Institute of Management made an innovative departure by
emphasizing the need to expand the use of management science to the
rural sector in the form of creating managers not only for corporate sector
but also for the social sector. The basic objective of introducing the two
years PGDM (RM) course is to inject professionalism in the field of rural
economy.

The AICTE approved programme aims at blending

the techniques of management with the unmet
needs of social as well as corporate sector. It trains
individuals to imbibe and cultivate human traits such
as organizational loyalty, understand the factors
leading to high level performance and self-motivation

problems, organize information and implement pragmatic solutions. The
course curriculum further helps them decipher and go beyond the obvious.

Programme Design
The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural Management) programme has five mutually supportive learning
segments: the classroom sessions, field exposure visits, Rural Living and Learning Experience (RLLE) and Management Training
Programme (MTP) and Independent Research Projects (IRP). The classroom segment exposes the students to theory and concepts
related to basic management disciplines, rural economy and development issues through different core and elective courses.

Field Trips are an integral part of the pedagogy and are designed to cater to the academic requirements of many courses like
Societal Analysis and Development Action, Social Research Methods, Natural Resources Management, Micro Planning etc. These
study trips gives the students the much needed rural exposure apart from providing an opportunity to learn from field level
realities.

Rural Living and Learning Experience (RLLE), is an essential pedagogical component of the programme during which students
are challenged with the realities of the rural life and learn nuances of the rural economy. The one month programme is designed
in such a way that the students have to stay in the selected village, study and watch the village life and economy closely. In
addition to this, they will also be engaged in carrying out Theme research activities.

The eight week Management Training Programme (MTP) provides the students with a learning opportunity and practical work
experience in organisations of repute in corporate and social sectors, to apply the management concepts learnt in the classroom
to real life situations and helps them develop innovative target oriented solutions to the major issues faced by the organisations.

Independent Research Projects (IRP) is offered in the second year to provide students to undertake longer term studies on a
particular topic with a view to provide students an opportunity to rigorously analyse and apply managerial insights to complex
problems in rural development and management.

Bhubaneswar – The Temple City

Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa is situated in Khurda district. The city has been built in two parts; on one side is the ancient
town with its famous temples and on the other, the newly constructed capital with its offices, courts and the private residences.
Bhubaneswar geographically serves not only as a link between northern and southern India but it also opens up channels of
communication and commerce with the rest of the world. Visitors are impressed with the splendour of the three monuments
the soaring spire of the Lingaraja temple, the white domed peace Pagoda of Dhauli on the bank of the river Daya and the pink
temple of Mahavir Jain on the Khandagiri hill. Apart from being the temple city, Bhubaneswar is amongst the most favoured
destinations for IT companies and corporates. Some of the big names like Infosys & Satyam Computers have their development
centres in Bhubaneswar along with STPI Park.
