Clinical Orthopedic Related Research, 468(5), 1450-1452. doi:

This article by Ahn and Bernstein puts into focus a specific type of fracture, the
intertrochanteric hip fracture thereby broadening the student’s understanding of the said
condition and its implications to one’s health. Based on the report, this fracture
comprises half of all the recorded incidents of hip fractures. It is primarily caused by low-
energy mechanisms such as a fall from the height of an average human being. This
type of fracture, as stated, typically occurs in geriatric patients. Things to consider when
diagnosis this disorder is the person’s age and bone fragility brought about by
osteoporosis. This study seems to also suggest surgery as the best way to treat the
ailment. Also, it saw prolonged bed rest and immobilization as being unhelpful to the
healing process as could lead to the formation decubitus ulcers, thromboembolic
events, and pneumonia.

bearing after lower extremity fractures in adults. Journal of American
Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 21(12), 727-738. doi:

This study sought to put into perspective the early weight-bearing protocol that
are placed on a fracture patient’s treatment plan. It explained that undergoing early
weight bearing exercises can be quite beneficial for the patient as it can improve his or
her functionality. It can also promote quicker healing of the bone while at the same time
minimize the economical impact of the injury.

This study by Friedman, Clark, Nicholas and Bukata presented a case study that
is quite similar to Margaret Donovan’s. It reported the case of a 98 year old geriatric
patient diagnosed with an intertrochanteric hip fracture and as well as osteoporosis.
This study helped the students further understand the role that osteoporosis plays in the
acquiring of hip fractures from a geriatric perspective. It also helped in the identification
of certain lifestyle factors contributing to Margaret Donovan’s osteoporosis.
Furthermore, it presented a view on how such conditions are treated and what factors
are to be considered for surgery and what post-operative plans can be put into place for
mobilization and quick recovery.

Pitt, P & Berry, H. (1991). Fluoride treatment in osteoporosis. Postgraduate

Medical Journal, 67(786), 323-326
The research gave way to understanding different treatment functions for
osteoporosis as it studied the effectivity of fluoride in treating osteoporosis compared to
other perceived medications. It reported that fluoride can greatly stimulate the formation
of osteoblasts and has a great effect on the synthesis of collagen and deposition of
collagen - all of which can strengthen the bone and can lead to an increase in bone
density. Also, fluoride is seen as having the ability to reduce the incidence of fractures.
These proves that supplements containing fluoride can effectively treat patients with
osteoporosis. This study also provides a brief overview on the use of calcitonin as a
treatment option for osteoporosis although not as extensively.
