QUESTION 1

a) With an aid of diagram, briefly explain the meaning circular curve.

(5 marks)

b) What do you understand about Point of Tangency?

(2 marks)

c) State and explain the essential control points to be marked on the ground before curve
could be set-out
(6 marks)

d) Briefly discuss the procedures of locating the tangent points of circular curves if the
intersection point (IP) is inaccessible.
(12 marks)

QUESTION 2

Two straights intersect at point IP8, chainage 3129.75 meter. Tabulate the data needed to
set out by a circular curve of radius 620 meters. The incoming and outgoing bearings of the
straight were 205° 30' 30" and 214° 00' 30" respectively, using 25 meters pegging interval.
(25 marks)

QUESTION 3

a) In the process of designing a curve, the factors listed below need to be considered for
the convenience of road users while driving. Discuss briefly the factors.

i) Intersection angle of curve

ii) Super elevation
iii) Design speed
iv) Sight Distance
v) Effect of centrifugal force
(15 marks)

b) With the aid of diagram briefly explain 4 types of vertical curves depending upon the
magnitude and sign of the gradients.

QUESTION 4

a) What is the difference between summit and valley curves and why are they needed?
(5 marks)

b) A vertical curve of 150m long will be inserted between two gradients. The first gradient
is + 1 % and meets a second gradient of +3% at intersection points VIP. The chainage
and reduce level (RL) of intersection point are 600.00m and 200.00m respectively.
Calculate the curve level at the various chainage points at 25m interval.
(20 marks)

QUESTION 5

a) What do you understands the term 'setting out' in engineering survey?

(5 marks)

b) Discuss the various types of horizontal grids that can be used during surveying and
setting out operations.
(12 marks)

c) In the setting out operation, there are various types of plan involved. List down the
plans.
(4 marks)
d) What is the information required to be shown on a setting out plan?
(4 marks)

QUESTION 6

a) How would you transfer the horizontal control through two shafts?
(5 marks)

b) Explain the basic operations procedure in mine surveying for determination of the
bearings and elevations.
(10 marks)

c) It is required to build a connection in the mine from the point X at R.L. of 150.00 to
another point Y at R.L. 140.00m. Determine the bearing, slope and length of the line XY
if the coordinate X (891.15N, 795.42E) and Y (880.24N, 741.25E).
