South Africa’s Energy Mix

Eskom is the main supplier of electricity in South Africa, supplying about 96% in South
African and just over 45% to Africa (Eskom, 2017). The wording “mix” refers to the fact
that Eskom uses different technologies to generate electricity.
Coal fired plants are the largest contributors in the energy mix contributing 38 548 MW.
The 14 plants run 24 hours a day to meet the demand, therefore, they are referred to as
base load power stations. The monumental Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, the first in
African soil ( and currently the only Nuclear plant in Africa) is also referred to as a base
load power plant producing 1 940 MW on a daily bases (Eskom Ltd., 2011; Eskom, 2017).
Adding to the energy mix, Eskom also has
i. Two conventional hydroelectric power stations,
ii. Three hydro pumped storage schemes
iii. Four Open Cycle Gas Turbines
iv. One Wind Farm renewable project contributing 100MW
The Eskom’s installed capacity is sitting at 46 246 MW, the two new build Kusile and
Medupi which are still under construction will provide additional 4.8 GW each (Eskom
Ltd., 2011; Eskom, 2017)
Question 1
1. Compute all these technologies and choose any generation technology and
elaborate how the electricity is generated using that technology.
2. Also discuss the environmental impacts and the feasibility (advantages and
disadvantages) of having such a generation technology South Africa
3. After Generation, the electricity goes through stages before it reaches the
consumer. Briefly discuss/explain such stages in detail.

Notes:

a) Use IEEE referencing style (Do not Copy and Paste)

b) Use illustration or pictures to give your assignment weight
c) Each group will have its own technology to discuss

ii. Brief Explanation of Available Technologies
