ApacheHVAC - Part 1

Introduction
In Part 1 training notes the basics of creating HVAC plant
and control networks for a building using IES’s ApacheHVAC
tool are covered. Simple networks are created for subsequent
use by ApacheSim, IES’s dynamic thermal simulation module.

ApacheSim dynamic simulations are In Part 2 training notes more complex

Before beginning with ApacheHVAC
it is necessary to be familiar with the
training videos and training notes for
SunCast, ApacheSim and MacroFlo.

Running ApacheSim with an ApacheHVAC link

Performing a dynamic thermal simulation using IES’s ApacheSim
thermal simulation software.
Switch to the Apache module in the Energy group of programs.

Enable the ApacheHVAC link to use the ApacheHVAC network in the simulation,
and select the appropriate ApacheHVAC .asp file.

Run the simulation.

Viewing results in Vista

Once the simulation has been performed view the relevant results in Vista, for
example room temperature, outside air temperature, HVAC system air
supply in the room, and fan electricity consumption.

Supplying air at a specified temperature to a room

In ApacheHVAC creating a system to supply air at a specified temperature
to a room (eg 15ºC).
Defining heat sources and chilled water loops, heating coils and cooling coils,
and their controls. Heat sources and chilled water loops must be defined
before heating coils or cooling coils can be placed.

Defining heat sources (‘hot water loops’)

ApacheHVAC - Part 1

Adding a “Generic heat source”

When a “Generic heat source” is chosen only one part-load heat source can be added.

Details can be specified regarding the operating temperatures for the Hot Water Loop.
Rated pump powers can be entered and performance curves selected.

ApacheHVAC - Part 1

A boiler efficiency curve can be selected.

The design heating capacity can be entered.

When a “Hot Water Loop” type system is chosen you can add more than one
heat source and they can be sequenced.

Defining chilled water loops

Create a chiller by entering part load curve data.
Enter the description (reference) of the chilled water loop:

Controlling the coils using Independent

Time Switch Controllers
Control the output of the coils to produce a desired temperature (eg 15ºC)
downstream of the coils. ApacheHVAC components such as coils must have a
control, and the control must be downstream of the component.

The finished network

Run a dynamic simulation using this network and look at the results in Vista,
including conditions at any point in the ApacheHVAC system, room temperature,
heating/cooling coil loads, boiler/chiller loads and HVAC system energy
consumption.
