Configure Outlook 2003/2007/2010 to use RPC over HTTP

About RPC over HTTP

You c an configure Mic rosoft Offic e Outlook® 2003/2007/2010 to c onnect to the Sc hool of Medic ine
Microsoft Exchange Server over the Internet without the need to use virtual private network (VPN)
c onnections. This feature - c onnec ting to an Exc hange acc ount by using Remote Proc edure Call
(RPC) over HTTP - allows Outlook users to access their Exchange Server accounts from the Internet
when they are traveling or are working outside their organization's firewall.

There are several requirements for configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003/2007/2010 to use RPC over
HTTP. These include:

Requirements:

The c lient must be running Outlook 2003 on a Microsoft Windows XP Servic e Pac k 2 (SP) or
later-based c omputer.
Install the SoM Secure Ac cess Certific ate from the OWA Website: http://owa.med.wayne.edu/
Your School of Medic ine username and password

In order for RPC over HTTP to work, you will need to install the SoM Sec ure Acc ess Certificate on
your computer. Installing the c ertificate will allow the entire c ertificate authority c hain to be
trusted.

Install the SoM Secure Access Certificate:

1. Open Internet Explorer

2. Go to the OWA web site: http://owa.med.wayne.edu

3. On the left side, click the link for "SoM Secure Access Certificate"

4. In the file download box, clic k "Open"

5. In the c ertificate box click "Install Certificate"

6. The "Automatically select the certificate store … " line should be selec ted already, click
"Next" to continue

7. A c onfirmation screen will c ome up, click "Finish"

8. An encryption key box will come up labeled "Root Certificate Store", click "Yes"

9. Click "OK" to close this box

10. Click "OK" to close the certificate window

11. Exit Internet Explorer

You c an confirm that the c ertificate is properly loaded by launc hing Internet Explorer and opening up
the OWA website: http://owa.med.wayne.edu. When you click on the link for Secure Ac cess, you
should immediately get the login box without a dialog box prompting about a certific ate. If you are
able to log into OWA without the c ertificate warning, then you are ready to create an outlook profile
on your c omputer.

Now that you have installed the c ertificate, you can configure Microsoft Outlook for the RPC over
HTTP connection.

Create an Outlook Profile to Use RPC over HTTP:

In Microsoft Windows XP:

1. Click on your Start button and then select Control Panel.

2. In Control Panel, do one of the following tasks:

If you are using Category View, in the left pane, under See Also, c lick Other Control
Panel Options, and then c lick Mail.
If you are using Classic View, double-clic k Mail.

3. In Mail Setup, under Profiles, c lick Show Profiles.

4. In Mail, click Add.

5. In New Profile, in the Profile Name box, type a name for this profile, and then click OK.

6. In the E-mail Accounts wizard, c lick Add a new e-mail account, and then clic k Next. For
Outlook 2010, choose manually c onfigure server setting or additional server types.
7. On the Server Type page, click Microsoft Exchange Server, and then clic k Next. For
Outlook 2010, choose Microsoft Exchange or c ompatible service.

8. On the Exchange Server Settings page, do the following steps:

In the Microsoft Exchange Server box, type the name of the back-end Exc hange
server - Med-Core05.med.wayne.edu
Select the c hec k box next to Use Cached Exchange Mode (Note - although it is
optional, it is rec ommended that the user ac counts that you are configuring for RPC over
HTTP use Cached Exc hange Mode)
In the User Name box, type the user name.
Click More Settings
In the Connection tab, in the Exchange over the Internet pane, select the Connect

8/22/2010 In the Connection tab, http://kb.wayne.edu/index.php?print=391
in the Exchange over the Internet pane, select the Connect
to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP c hec k box. For Outlook 2010, In the
Connection tab, in the Outlook Anywhere Pane, select the Connect to my Exchange
mailbox using HTTP chec k box.
Click Exc hange Proxy Settings.

Please note: When prompted to login, you must login using MED\login name. The
initial connection can be a little slow and doesn't reflect the operational speed. So if
Outlook states that it c annot find the Exchange server, just click Retry.

9. For increased security, you will need to specify Connect with SSL only and Mutually
authenticate the session when connecting with SSL. On the Exchange Proxy Settings
page, under Connections Settings, do the following steps:

Enter the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the RPC proxy server in the section that
states Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange:
owa.med.wayne.edu
Select the option for Connect using SSL only.
Next, select the Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL check
box.
Enter the FQDN of the RPC proxy server in the Principle name for proxy server box.
Use the format: msstd:owa.med.wayne.edu.

10. As an optional step, you can configure Outlook 2003 to c onnec t to your Exc hange server using
RPC over HTTP. By default on a fast network, Outlook attempts to connect by using the LAN
connection first. On a slow network, Outlook attempts to c onnect by using HTTP first. You can
override default behavior in either c ase by c hanging the following settings:

On a fast network, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP
To change the default behavior for fast networks (example: High Speed Internet
Connec tion), select this check box.
On a slow network, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP
To change the default behavior for slow networks (example: Dialup Internet Ac cess),
clear this check box.

11. On the Exchange Proxy Settings page, in the Proxy authentication settings window, in the
Use this authentication when connecting to my proxy server for Exchange list, selec t
Basic Authentication.

12. Click OK.

We have seen some issues where users running a personal firewall may have trouble c onnecting to
the Exc hange server from Outlook 2003 – if you have this problem, it is recommended to disable your
firewall and try again. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the helpdesk at 313-577-
1527.
