Asking Questions Part II: “Let’s Mingle!”

Grade/Level: Middle School / Low-Intermediate


Objectives:
• Students will practice speaking and producing basic questions to get to know somebody
better such as their name, hobby, job, where they are from, etc.

Key Expressions/Vocabulary:
*Students should know these expressions, but the purpose of this lesson is to drill speaking
them so they become natural and quick to produce.*
• What is your name? What is your job? Where do you live? How old are you? What is
your hobby? Are you married? How many children do you have?
• How do you spell it? (review from previous lesson)
• Can you repeat that please? (review)

Materials/Preparation:
• Identity cards
• Worksheet
• PPT presentation

PROCEDURE

1. Warm-Up (5 min): Broken Telephone. I give the last person in each row a sentence
and then they must pass the sentence down the row by whispering it. The first person
runs to the board and writes it down to win points for their row. 1st: Fantastic 2nd: What is
your name? 3rd: What did you do during Chuseok?
2. Review Question forms (2 min): What, When, Where, Who, Why, How from
previous class. Ask for example questions and the use/function of each.
3. Introduce “Kimbap English” Activity (5 min): Hand out pre-made ID cards to
everybody in class, then introduce what the card looks like via PPT.
1. My name is Jack (“What’s your name?”)
2. I am a mailman. (“What’s your job?”)
3. I live in New York. (“Where do you live?”)
4. I am 25 years old. (“How old are you?”)
5. My hobby is oil-painting. (“What’s your hobby?”)
6. I am not married. (“Are you married?”)
7. I have no children. (“How many children do you have?”)
Elicit correct question forms and write them on board to match each statement.
4. Kimbap English (10 min): Students will ask target questions to partners in two long
lines. Rotate after 1 minute. Repeat several times as they practice asking questions.
5. “Mingle” Activity (20 min): Students will be given a card with a person on it. They
must role-play the person on their card as they go around the room and fill out their
worksheet by asking target questions to other people in the class. The first person to
correctly fill out the worksheet using target language questions will get a prize.
