First source of strength

2.3.5. atha prāṇaḥ

The sources of strength will be elucidated as follows.

2.3.6. kāraka yogaḥ prathamo bhānām

A rāśi with grahas is stronger than those without them1.

2.3.7. sāmye bhūyasā

If the same, those with more grahas are stronger.

2.3.8. tatastungādīḥ

If the same, take the one with stronger grahas as per dignity.

2.3.9. nīsargastataḥ

If the same, consider the natural strength of the rāśis.

2.3.10. tadabhāve svāmīna ittham bhāvaḥ

If rāśis are vacant, judge the strength of their lords according to


aforementioned rules, including the nisarga bala of the grahas, from Śani
to Sūrya in the ascending order of strength.

2.3.11. agrāyatotra vīśeṣāt

If they are equally strong, consider the degrees.

2.3.12. prātīveśīkaḥ puruṣe

If even them the strength is the same, consider that the odd rāśi is stronger
if its lord occupy an even rāśi and vice-versa.

2.3.13. itī prathamaḥ

Thus the first sources of strength was elucidated.

Second source of strength

2.3.14. svāmī gurujñadṛgyogo dvītiyaḥ

The second, the dṛṣṭi of Guru, Budha and its own lord2.

Third source of strenght

2.3.15. svāmīnastṛtiyaḥ

The third, based on rāśi lord is elucidated as follows.

2.3.16. svātsvāmīnaḥ kaṇṭakādīṣvapāra daurbalyam

The rāśi lord in kendra, panaphara or apoklima from ātmakāraka will be


strong in the descending order.

Fourth source of strenght

2.3.17. chaturthataḥ puruṣe

The fourth is the odd rāśis.3

Such source of strenght is applied in phalita daśās generally, as says Jaimini in 2.4.1: "dvītiyam bhāva
balam..."

Sanjay Rath says that the weaker and most afflicted one will be the stronger in this rule and that it must
be applied to determine the māraka daśā, however, although this is true regarding māraka daśā, Jaimini
didn't mentioned this in such sūtra.
