E.B WHITE

Charlotte’s Web was written by a

man called Elwyn Brooks White.
He never liked his name so he
insisted that his friends called him
Andy and he published his books
under the name ‘E.B. White’. E.B.
White was born over a century ago,
in 1899, and he grew up in the US
state of New York. When he had a
family of his own, they moved to
live in a farmhouse in Maine.
E.B White was a reporter and an
editor for different newspapers and
E.B White and his dog magazines, including the New
Yorker. By the time he came to
write Charlotte’s Web, he was
already a published children’s author. In total, he authored 3 children’s stories (including
Charlotte’s Web) and many books for adult readers too. As well as writing books for children and
adults, White co-authored a book specifically written for writers, called The Elements of Style.
White was said to have a deep love for animals; this emerges clearly from his writings. His
experiences and memories from his farm clearly influenced his stories. In a letter dedicated to his
readers, E.B White told of how he was inspired by the animals that lived in his barn.
One day, as he was on his way to feed his pig, he started to feel pity for the animal that he knew
would soon die. He began to imagine different ways he could save the pig. He had also been
mesmerised watching a big grey spider weaving an impressive web. He noticed how the web
glistened with the early morning dew. Gradually the two experiences were weaved together, so to
speak, and provided the foundational plot for Charlotte’s Web.
He was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest US civilian award, in
1963. Later in his life, in 1971, he was awarded a National Medal for Literature. He
also won other prizes and titles for his literary work. Another example of his success
is that all three of White’s children’s books became films. When his beloved tale
Charlotte’s Web was made into an animated movie, he fought for the plot to stay true
to his original narrative. Reportedly, White and his wife hated the finished version.

You should write about:

1. how Fern treats him at the beginning of the novel.
2. the way Wilbur behaves around Fern and his friendship with her.
3. how Wilbur reacts when he escapes from the pigpen.
4. how Wilbur feels at the end of Chapter 4.

How has Wilbur’s life changed by the end of Chapter 4?

By the end of Chapter 4, Wilbur’s life is almost unrecognisable compared

to the beginning of the novel. Fern rescues him at the start of the novel and

saves him from being executed.. When Mr Arable gives him to Fern, she

immediately begins to care for him as if he is a human. He is allowed to

wander wherever he wants, is kept warm and comfortable, and is fed

regularly. This changes as soon as he is sold to Uncle Homer, who keeps

Wilbur in a barn and will not let Fern into the pigpen.

FARM ANIMALS

In the UK, more than 900 million animals are reared every year on pastoral and mixed farms.
Typical UK farm animals include pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens.

PIGS
Pigs are hoofed mammals with short legs,
stocky bodies and large heads, with a long
nose called a snout. Pigs are
intelligent creatures and have a very good
sense of hearing and smell. There are
many different types of pig, including wild
and domestic breeds. Wild pigs live in
woodland areas, whereas domestic pigs
live on farms and are sometimes kept as
A pig and a litter of piglets pets. Domestic pigs are bred by farmers to
produce pork, bacon and ham. Pigs give
birth to a litter of about ten piglets. Some litters include a runt, a very small and weak piglet.
Runts usually struggle to grow well and often die within the first few weeks. Like all
mammals, the piglets feed from their mother’s milk. Usually piglets are taken away from their
mother after three or four weeks. Farmers then feed their pigs a mixed diet of food including
oats, barley and grass.
GEESE
Geese are part of the waterfowl
family, birds that spend much of
their life in or near the water.
Geese have webbed feet which
help them to swim well.
However, they spend less time
in the water than other similar
aquatic birds such as ducks and
swans. There are two main
types of geese, black geese and
A gaggle of geese
grey geese. The term goose
usually refers to the female bird,
whereas gander refers to the male bird.
Geese live in flocks that travel around together in search of warm weather and food; a group of
geese is technically called a gaggle, if they are on land. After laying all her eggs, a mother
goose will sit on them to keep them warm and safe. Usually a goose can sit on 7-10 eggs at
one time and this process takes around 28-30 days. Whilst the mother incubates her eggs, the
gander will stand guard and watch for predators. A few hours after hatching from their eggs, the
baby geese, called goslings, are able to walk, swim and find food.

Trustworthy Templeton?

“The rat had no morals, no conscience, no scruples, no

consideration, no decency, no milk of rodent kindness, no
compunctions, no higher feeling, no friendliness, no anything. He
would kill a gosling if he could get away with it—the goose knew
that. Everybody knew it.”

There must be a reason that none of the

animals trusts Templeton. They are all very
careful around him, and he is very careful
around them.
There are rumours that the last time the
geese had goslings, Templeton stole one
of them in the middle of the night!
When Fern asks why Templeton is not
friends with any of the animals, Charlotte
begins to explain….

Imagine you are Charlotte.

You are a nocturnal animal and you saw
everything.
Tell the story of the night Templeton
stole the gosling.

“The barn was still dark. The sheep lay motionless. Even the goose was quiet. Overhead, on the
main floor, nothing stirred: the cows were resting, the horses dozed. Only I was awake.”

Charlotte has started the story for you, setting the scene and writing
the first paragraph. Everything is still and silent. Remember,
Templeton is very sneaky and very secretive: it would have taken a
while for Charlotte to notice what he was doing.

You must:
1. tell the story chronologically (in the order it happened).
2. describe what you heard and saw.
3. use direct speech for more than one character.

SPIDERS: PART ONE

Spiders are eight-legged mini-beasts that belong to a group of creatures called arachnids.
There are more than 43,000 types of spiders around the world. Spiders range in size, shape
and type; some live in deserts, whilst others survive in ponds and streams.

American penny penny

Spiders have very interesting bodies. They have an exoskeleton, which means that their
skeleton structure is on the outside of their body. Spiders have eight legs, which are each made
up of seven sections. These legs have small bristles which pick up vibrations in the air and on
the web.
Spiders have organs called spinnerets on their abdomen which squeeze out liquid silk. The
spider uses its legs to pull and stretch the silk into a web. As the silk dries, it becomes hard, but
the middle of the web is especially sticky to catch flying insects. Common spiders can produce
different types of silk, which have different purposes. A spider’s web is intricately woven with
fine silk threads. It may look delicate but it can hold 4,000 times the spider’s own weight. Webs
can be woven into different shapes. Some spiders weave a new web every day or night, but not
every spider species can weave a web.
Spiders are hunters and their webs are their main tool to catch their prey. In fact, some spiders
like to decorate their webs with extra silk designs to attract insects. Spiders play an important
part in our ecosystem and food chain; they eat flies and other insects, and are eaten by
hedgehogs, lizards, toads and some birds.

FAIRGROUNDS

A country fair, or agricultural show, is a large public event which showcases the animals,
produce, equipment and practices related to farming. A regular fair is diverse and full of
different traditions and elements, from tractors to turnips, strawberry jam to sheep, and
rollercoaster rides to ribbons. Typically, fairs include a mix of competition, trade and
entertainment.
Fairs first originated as part of religious festivals, events where people would gather to worship.
Over time, people used these gatherings to trade goods and share knowledge as well. For
centuries, farming has been an important part of society and throughout history, fairs have
played their role in supporting the farm trade. In thirteenth century Britain, different charters
were put in place to put the royal family in charge of the fairs. Fairs still happen today and are
an important part of life in some country towns and cities. Almost all the states in America have
a state fair.
Animal shows have always been very common at
fairs. This involves judging animals on their breed,
size or performance. Judges also award prizes for
the biggest and best fruit and vegetables.
Historically, the entertainment was simple: there
were sometimes games, attractions and/or clowns.
Modern day fairs include many of the same
elements as their historical counterparts, such as
swings and roundabouts. However, nowadays,
amusement and entertainment are increasingly
central to the proceedings.
A Ferris wheel A long-standing and iconic fairground attraction is
the Ferris wheel. A Ferris wheel is a large wheel
which holds passengers in small carriages and
rotates around in a circle, much like the London Eye. The Ferris wheel takes its name from its
inventor, George Washington Ferris, who created the first big wheel in 1893. Even in the 1890s,
some big wheels were capable of carrying over 1,000 passengers in forty or so carriages. The
wheel may no longer be the most thrilling or exciting fairground ride, but the iconic ride
continues to be a part of modern fairs.

SPIDERS: PART TWO

Once a spider’s eggs are fertilised, it is very important to keep them safe from predators until
they are ready to hatch. Most spiders spin a silk pouch to protect their young; some spiders will
then abandon them, whilst other spider species will stay with the egg sac until their babies
hatch. The black widow spider, for example, spins a silk cocoon to wrap her eggs in. She then
attaches the protective sac to a plant and waits there for the eggs to hatch.
There can be hundreds or even thousands of eggs in one sac. Once the eggs have hatched,
the spiders continue to grow to maturity. Different spiders have very varied lifespans, ranging
from just a few months to a couple of years. Some tarantula spiders can live up to twenty years
and lay lots of eggs during their lifetime.
Some young spiders will climb to a high point, release some silk and float away with the wind.
This is called ballooning, it is also sometimes referred to as kiting. Their silk acts as a parachute
to carry them in the air. Hundreds of spiders might take part in this ballooning exercise together.
As they land, their silk strands form something similar to a blanket to give them a safer landing.
Lots of spiders die when they attempt ballooning, so older and heavier spiders are less likely to
try it.
Some spiders can travel quite some distances
and heights through ballooning. Charles
Darwin, the English naturalist who travelled
the world to study different life forms, once
saw a large group of spiders land on his ship,
sixty miles off the coast of South America!
Many people are extremely scared of spiders.
This is called arachnophobia. However, only a
few types of spiders are actually dangerous to
humans. Very few spiders will bite humans,
and even fewer of those bites are deadly.
Whilst some people dislike spiders, some
choose to keep them as a pet. Spiders, in
A spider guarding her egg sac particular tarantulas, have been a relatively
popular pet for some years now. They are
considered good pets for several reasons:
they are silent, they are low-maintenance and they don’t take up much space.

“The end of the book is so sad. Charlotte was such a great friend to Wilbur. It’s
just like it says in the book: “No one had ever had such a friend – so affectionate,
so loyal, and so skilful.” Charlotte was all of those things to Wilbur.”

Jane agrees with the statement in the book – that Charlotte was
affectionate, loyal and skilful. Why does she think this?

You should write about:

1. how much Wilbur misses Charlotte when she dies.
2. how Charlotte encourages Wilbur and shows she cares.
3. how Charlotte makes sure that Wilbur is safe.
4. how Charlotte uses her skills to help Wilbur.

Charlotte is as a very special friend to Wilbur. She is affectionate, loyal

and skilful. Charlotte is friendly to all the animals, but she especially
