Examples:
Example 1.( percentage mixture problems)
A chemist needs to mix an 18% acid solution to obtain 12 liters
of a 36% solution. How many liters of each of the acid solutions
must be used?
Assumption:

Let x be the number of liters of 18% acid solution to be used in

the mixture.
Let 12-x be the number of liters of the 45% acid solution to be
used in the mixture.

Given:
12 liters of a 36% solution.

Requirements:
How many liters of each of the acid solution must be used?

Answer:
The chemist needs 4 liters of 18% acid solution and 8 liters of
45% acid solution.

Example 2.( coins mixture problem)

Jim has quarter and nickels. He has twice as many quarters as
nickels. If the value of the coins totals 440, how many nickels
and quarters does Jim have?
Assumption:
N= nickels q= quarters
Let n be the number of nickels
Let 2n=q be the number of quarter
Number of q + n
coins
Value per 25 5
coin
Total q(29) + n(5) = 440
value

Given:
440 Value of the total coins

Requirements:
How many nickels and quarters does Jim have?

Answer:
Jim have 8 nickels and 16 quarters.

Example 3 ( linear equation)

170 coins worth of 26 dollars

Requirements:
How many of each coins does she have?

Answer:
Lacy have 60 quarters and 110 dimes

Example 4 ( stamp problem)

Jerry has some 3 stamps and 29 stamps worth 154. The number of
29 stamps is four less than three times the number of 3 stamps.
How many 29 stamps does he have?

Assumption:
Let x be the number of 3 stamps
Let 3x -4 be the number of 29 stamps

Given:
3 stamps and 29 stamps
154 the total value

Requirements:
How many 29 stamps does he have?
Answer:
